1.    It happened in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, when wine was before him, that I took up the wine, and gave it to the king. Now I had not been [before] sad in his presence.     And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king.     VYHY BChDSh NYSN ShNTh 'yShUrYM L'aUrThChShSTh'a HMLK YYN LPhNYV V'aSh'a 'aTh- HYYN V'aThNH LMLK VL'a-HYYThY Ur'y LPhNYV.     And it cometh to pass, in the month of Nisan, the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, wine is before him, and I lift up the wine, and give to the king, and I had not been sad before him;     factum est autem in mense nisan anno vicesimo Artarxersis regis et vinum erat ante eum et levavi vinum et dedi regi et non eram quasi languidus ante faciem eius
 
2.    The king said to me, "Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick? This is nothing else but sorrow of heart." Then I was very much afraid.     Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,     ויאמר  לי  המלך 
מדוע  פניך  רעים
ואתה  אינך  חולה
אין  זה  כי־אם  רע
לב  ואירא  הרבה
מאד׃
    VY'aMUr LY HMLK MDV'y PhNYK Ur'yYM V'aThH 'aYNK ChVLH 'aYN ZH KY-'aM Ur'y LB V'aYUr'a HUrBH M'aD.     and the king saith to me, `Wherefore is thy face sad, and thou not sick? this is nothing except sadness of heart;` and I fear very much,     dixitque mihi rex quare vultus tuus tristis cum te aegrotum non videam non est hoc frustra sed malum nescio quid in corde tuo est et timui valde ac nimis
 
3.    I said to the king, "Let the king live forever! Why shouldn't my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' tombs, lies waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?"     And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?     ואמר  למלך  המלך 
לעולם  יחיה  מדוע
לא־ירעו  פני  אשר
העיר  בית־קברות
אבתי  חרבה  ושעריה
אכלו  באש׃
    V'aMUr LMLK HMLK L'yVLM YChYH MDV'y L'a-YUr'yV PhNY 'aShUr H'yYUr BYTh-QBUrVTh 'aBThY ChUrBH VSh'yUrYH 'aKLV B'aSh.     and say to the king, `Let the king to the age live! wherefore should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of the graves of my fathers, is a waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?`     et dixi regi rex in aeternum vive quare non maereat vultus meus quia civitas domus sepulchrorum patris mei deserta est et portae eius conbustae sunt igni
 
4.    Then the king said to me, "For what do you make request?" So I prayed to the God of heaven.     Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.     ויאמר  לי  המלך 
על־מה־זה  אתה  מבקש
ואתפלל  אל־אלהי
השמים׃
    VY'aMUr LY HMLK 'yL-MH-ZH 'aThH MBQSh V'aThPhLL 'aL-'aLHY HShMYM.     And the king saith to me, `For what art thou seeking?` and I pray unto the God of the heavens,     et ait mihi rex pro qua re postulas et oravi Deum caeli
 
5.    I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you would send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' tombs, that I may build it."     And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.     ואמר  למלך 
אם־על־המלך  טוב
ואם־ייטב  עבדך
לפניך  אשר  תשלחני
אל־  יהודה  אל־עיר
קברות  אבתי
ואבננה׃
    V'aMUr LMLK 'aM-'yL-HMLK TVB V'aM-YYTB 'yBDK LPhNYK 'aShUr ThShLChNY 'aL- YHVDH 'aL-'yYUr QBUrVTh 'aBThY V'aBNNH.     and say to the king, `If to the king it be good, and if thy servant be pleasing before thee, that thou send me unto Judah, unto the city of the graves of my fathers, and I built it.`     et dixi ad regem si videtur regi bonum et si placet servus tuus ante faciem tuam ut mittas me in Iudaeam ad civitatem sepulchri patris mei et aedificabo eam
 
6.    The king said to me (the queen was also sitting by him), "For how long shall your journey be? And when will you return?" So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.     And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.     ויאמר  לי  המלך 
והשגל  יושבת  אצלו
עד־מתי  יהיה  מהלכך
ומתי  תשוב  וייטב
לפני־המלך  וישלחני
ואתנה  לו  זמן׃
    VY'aMUr LY HMLK VHShGL YVShBTh 'aTShLV 'yD-MThY YHYH MHLKK VMThY ThShVB VYYTB LPhNY-HMLK VYShLChNY V'aThNH LV ZMN.     And the king saith to me (and the queen is sitting near him), `How long is thy journey? and when dost thou return?` and it is good before the king, and he sendeth me away, and I set to him a time.     dixitque mihi rex et regina quae sedebat iuxta eum usque ad quod tempus erit iter tuum et quando reverteris et placuit ante vultum regis et misit me et constitui ei tempus
 
7.    Moreover I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah;     Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;     ואומר  למלך 
אם־על־המלך  טוב
אגרות  יתנו־לי
על־פחוות  עבר  הנהר
אשר  יעבירוני  עד
אשר־אבוא
אל־יהודה׃
    V'aVMUr LMLK 'aM-'yL-HMLK TVB 'aGUrVTh YThNV-LY 'yL-PhChVVTh 'yBUr HNHUr 'aShUr Y'yBYUrVNY 'yD 'aShUr-'aBV'a 'aL-YHVDH.     And I say to the king, `If to the king it be good, letters let be given to me for the governors beyond the River, that they let me pass over till that I come in unto Judah:     et dixi regi si regi videtur bonum epistulas det mihi ad duces regionis trans Flumen ut transducant me donec veniam in Iudaeam
 
8.    and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple, for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into." The king granted my requests, because of the good hand of my God on me.     And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.     ואגרת  אל־אסף  שמר 
הפרדס  אשר  למלך
אשר  יתן־לי  עצים
לקרות  את־שערי
הבירה  אשר־לבית
ולחומת  העיר  ולבית
אשר־אבוא  אליו
ויתן־לי  המלך  כיד־
אלהי  הטובה  עלי׃
    V'aGUrTh 'aL-'aSPh ShMUr HPhUrDS 'aShUr LMLK 'aShUr YThN-LY 'yTShYM LQUrVTh 'aTh-Sh'yUrY HBYUrH 'aShUr-LBYTh VLChVMTh H'yYUr VLBYTh 'aShUr-'aBV'a 'aLYV VYThN-LY HMLK KYD- 'aLHY HTVBH 'yLY.     and a letter unto Asaph, keeper of the paradise that the king hath, that he give to me trees for beams for the gates of the palace that the house hath, and for the wall of the city, and for the house into which I enter;` and the king giveth to me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.     et epistulam ad Asaph custodem saltus regis ut det mihi ligna et tegere possim portas turris domus et muri civitatis et domum quam ingressus fuero et dedit mihi rex iuxta manum Dei mei bonam mecum
 
9.    Then I came to the governors beyond the River, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent with me captains of the army and horsemen.     Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king's letters. עבר  הנהר  ואתנה
להם  את  אגרות  המלך

    V'aBV'a 'aL-PhChVVTh 'yBUr HNHUr V'aThNH LHM 'aTh 'aGUrVTh HMLK VYShLCh 'yMY HMLK ShUrY ChYL VPhUrShYM.     And I come in unto the governors beyond the River, and give to them the letters of the king; and the king sendeth with me heads of a force, and horsemen;     et veni ad duces regionis trans Flumen dedique eis epistulas regis miserat autem mecum rex principes militum et equites
 
10.    When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly, because a man had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.     When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.     וישמע  סנבלט  החרני

    VYShM'y SNBLT HChUrNY VTVBYH H'yBD H'yMNY VYUr'y LHM Ur'yH GDLH 'aShUr-B'a 'aDM LBQSh TVBH LBNY YShUr'aL.     and Sanballat the Horonite heareth, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and it is evil to them -- a great evil -- that a man hath come in to seek good for the sons of Israel.     et audierunt Sanaballat Horonites et Tobias servus ammanites et contristati sunt adflictione magna quod venisset homo qui quaereret prosperitatem filiorum Israhel
 
11.    So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.     So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.     ואבוא  אל־ירושלם 
ואהי־שם  ימים

    V'aBV'a 'aL-YUrVShLM V'aHY-ShM YMYM ShLShH.     And I come in unto Jerusalem, and I am there three days,     et veni Hierusalem et eram ibi diebus tribus
 
12.    I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God put into my heart to do for Jerusalem; neither was there any animal with me, except the animal that I rode on.     And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.     ואקום  לילה  אני

ולא־הגדתי  לאדם  מה
אלהי  נתן  אל־  לבי
לעשות  לירושלם
ובהמה  אין  עמי  כי
אם־הבהמה  אשר  אני
רכב  בה׃
    V'aQVM LYLH 'aNY V'aNShYM M'yT 'yMY VL'a-HGDThY L'aDM MH 'aLHY NThN 'aL- LBY L'yShVTh LYUrVShLM VBHMH 'aYN 'yMY KY 'aM-HBHMH 'aShUr 'aNY UrKB BH.     and I rise by night, I and a few men with me, and have not declared to a man what my God is giving unto my heart to do for Jerusalem, and there is no beast with me except the beast on which I am riding.     et surrexi nocte ego et viri pauci mecum et non indicavi cuiquam quid Deus dedisset in corde meo ut facerem in Hierusalem et iumentum non erat mecum nisi animal cui sedebam
 
13.    I went out by night by the valley gate, even toward the jackal's well, and to the dung gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and its gates were consumed with fire.     And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.     ואצאה  בשער־הגיא 
לילה  ואל־פני  עין
התנין  ואל־שער
האשפת  ואהי  שבר
בחומת  ירושלם
אשר־המפרוצים
ושעריה  אכלו  באש׃
    V'aTSh'aH BSh'yUr-HGY'a LYLH V'aL-PhNY 'yYN HThNYN V'aL-Sh'yUr H'aShPhTh V'aHY ShBUr BChVMTh YUrVShLM 'aShUr-HMPhUrVTShYM VSh'yUrYH 'aKLV B'aSh.     And I go out through the gate of the valley by night, and unto the front of the fountain of the dragon, and unto the gate of the dunghill, and I am measuring about the walls of Jerusalem, that are broken down, and its gates consumed with fire.     et egressus sum per portam Vallis nocte et ante fontem Draconis et ad portam Stercoris et considerabam murum Hierusalem dissipatum et portas eius consumptas igni
 
14.    Then I went on to the spring gate and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the animal that was under me to pass.     Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.     ואעבר  אל־שער  העין 
ואל־ברכת  המלך
ואין־מקום  לבהמה
לעבר  תחתי׃
    V'a'yBUr 'aL-Sh'yUr H'yYN V'aL-BUrKTh HMLK V'aYN-MQVM LBHMH L'yBUr ThChThY.     And I pass over unto the gate of the fountain, and unto the pool of the king, and there is no place for the beast under me to pass over,     et transivi ad portam Fontis et ad aquaeductum Regis et non erat locus iumento cui sedebam ut transiret
 
15.    Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall; and I turned back, and entered by the valley gate, and so returned.     Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.     ואהי  עלה  בנחל

    V'aHY 'yLH BNChL LYLH V'aHY ShBUr BChVMH V'aShVB V'aBV'a BSh'yUr HGY'a V'aShVB.     and I am going up through the brook by night, and am measuring about the wall, and turn back, and come in through the gate of the valley, and turn back.     et ascendi per torrentem nocte et considerabam murum et reversus veni ad portam Vallis et redii
 
16.    The rulers didn't know where I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest who did the work.     And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.     והסגנים  לא  ידעו 
אנה  הלכתי  ומה  אני
עשה  וליהודים
ולכהנים  ולחרים
ולסגנים  וליתר  עשה
המלאכה  עד־כן  לא
הגדתי׃
    VHSGNYM L'a YD'yV 'aNH HLKThY VMH 'aNY 'yShH VLYHVDYM VLKHNYM VLChUrYM VLSGNYM VLYThUr 'yShH HML'aKH 'yD-KN L'a HGDThY.     And the prefects have not known whither I have gone, and what I am doing; and to the Jews, and to the priests, and to the freemen, and to the prefects, and to the rest of those doing the work, hitherto I have not declared it;     magistratus autem nesciebant quo abissem aut quid ego facerem sed et Iudaeis et sacerdotibus et optimatibus et magistratibus et reliquis qui faciebant opus usque ad id locorum nihil indicaveram
 
17.    Then I said to them, "You see the evil case that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we won't be disgraced."     Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.     ואומר  אלהם  אתם 
ראים  הרעה  אשר
אנחנו  בה  אשר
ירושלם  חרבה
ושעריה  נצתו  באש
לכו  ונבנה  את־חומת
ירושלם  ולא־נהיה
עוד  חרפה׃
    V'aVMUr 'aLHM 'aThM Ur'aYM HUr'yH 'aShUr 'aNChNV BH 'aShUr YUrVShLM ChUrBH VSh'yUrYH NTShThV B'aSh LKV VNBNH 'aTh-ChVMTh YUrVShLM VL'a-NHYH 'yVD ChUrPhH.     and I say unto them, `Ye are seeing the evil that we are in, in that Jerusalem is waste, and its gates have been burnt with fire; come and we build the wall of Jerusalem, and we are not any more a reproach.`     et dixi eis vos nostis adflictionem in qua sumus quia Hierusalem deserta est et portae eius consumptae sunt igni venite et aedificemus muros Hierusalem et non simus ultra obprobrium
 
18.    I told them of the hand of my God which was good on me, as also of the king's words that he had spoken to me. They said, "Let's rise up and build." So they strengthened their hands for the good work.     Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.     ואגיד  להם  את־יד 
אלהי  אשר־היא  טובה
עלי  ואף־דברי  המלך
אשר  אמר־  לי
ויאמרו  נקום
ובנינו  ויחזקו
ידיהם  לטובה׃
    V'aGYD LHM 'aTh-YD 'aLHY 'aShUr-HY'a TVBH 'yLY V'aPh-DBUrY HMLK 'aShUr 'aMUr- LY VY'aMUrV NQVM VBNYNV VYChZQV YDYHM LTVBH.     And I declare to them the hand of my God that is good upon me, and also the words of the king that he said to me, and they say, `Let us rise, and we have built;` and they strengthen their hands for good.     et indicavi eis manum Dei mei quod esset bona mecum et verba regis quae locutus est mihi et aio surgamus et aedificemus et confortatae sunt manus eorum in bono
 
19.    But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they ridiculed us, and despised us, and said, "What is this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?"     But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?     וישמע  סנבלט  החרני 
וטביה  העבד  העמוני
וגשם  הערבי  וילעגו
לנו  ויבזו  עלינו
ויאמרו  מה־הדבר
הזה  אשר  אתם  עשים
העל  המלך  אתם
מרדים׃
    VYShM'y SNBLT HChUrNY VTBYH H'yBD H'yMVNY VGShM H'yUrBY VYL'yGV LNV VYBZV 'yLYNV VY'aMUrV MH-HDBUr HZH 'aShUr 'aThM 'yShYM H'yL HMLK 'aThM MUrDYM.     And Sanballat the Horonite heareth, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, and they mock at us, and despise us, and say, `What is this thing that ye are doing? against the king are ye rebelling?`     audierunt autem Sanaballat Horonites et Tobias servus ammanites et Gosem Arabs et subsannaverunt nos et despexerunt dixeruntque quae est haec res quam facitis numquid contra regem vos rebellatis
 
20.    Then answered I them, and said to them, "The God of heaven will prosper us. Therefore we, his servants, will arise and build; but you have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem."     Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.     ואשיב  אותם  דבר 
ואומר  להם  אלהי
השמים  הוא  יצליח
לנו  ואנחנו  עבדיו
נקום  ובנינו  ולכם
אין־חלק  וצדקה
וזכרון  בירושלם׃
    V'aShYB 'aVThM DBUr V'aVMUr LHM 'aLHY HShMYM HV'a YTShLYCh LNV V'aNChNV 'yBDYV NQVM VBNYNV VLKM 'aYN-ChLQ VTShDQH VZKUrVN BYUrVShLM.     And I return them word, and say to them, `The God of the heavens -- He doth give prosperity to us, and we His servants rise and have built; and to you there is no portion, and right, and memorial in Jerusalem.`     et reddidi eis sermonem dixique ad eos Deus caeli ipse nos iuvat et nos servi eius sumus surgamus et aedificemus vobis autem non est pars et iustitia et memoria in Hierusalem
