1.    Now when Mordecai found out all that was done, Mordecai tore his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and wailed loudly and a bitterly.     When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;     ומרדכי  ידע

    VMUrDKY YD'y 'aTh-KL-'aShUr N'yShH VYQUr'y MUrDKY 'aTh-BGDYV VYLBSh ShQ V'aPhUr VYTSh'a BThVK H'yYUr VYZ'yQ Z'yQH GDVLH VMUrH.     And Mordecai hath known all that hath been done, and Mordecai rendeth his garments, and putteth on sackcloth and ashes, and goeth forth into the midst of the city and crieth -- a cry loud and bitter,     quae cum audisset Mardocheus scidit vestimenta sua et indutus est sacco spargens cinerem capiti et in platea mediae civitatis voce magna clamabat ostendens amaritudinem animi sui
 
2.    He came even before the king's gate, for no one is allowed inside the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.     And came even before the king's gate: for none might enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.     ויבוא  עד  לפני

    VBKL-MDYNH VMDYNH MQVM 'aShUr DBUr-HMLK VDThV MGY'y 'aBL GDVL LYHVDYM VTShVM VBKY VMSPhD ShQ V'aPhUr YTSh'y LUrBYM.     And in every province and province, the place where the word of the king, even his law, is coming, a great mourning have the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and lamenting: sackcloth and ashes are spread for many.     in omnibus quoque provinciis oppidis ac locis ad quae crudele regis dogma pervenerat planctus ingens erat apud Iudaeos ieiunium ululatus et fletus sacco et cinere multis pro strato utentibus
 
4.    Esther's maidens and her eunuchs came and told her this, and the queen was exceedingly grieved. She sent clothing to Mordecai, to replace his sackcloth; but he didn't receive it.     So Esther's maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not.     ותבואינה  נערות 
אסתר  וסריסיה
ויגידו  לה  ותתחלחל
המלכה  מאד  ותשלח
בגדים  להלביש
את־מרדכי  ולהסיר
שקו  מעליו  ולא

    VThBV'aYNH N'yUrVTh 'aSThUr VSUrYSYH VYGYDV LH VThThChLChL HMLKH M'aD VThShLCh BGDYM LHLBYSh 'aTh-MUrDKY VLHSYUr ShQV M'yLYV VL'a QBL.     And young women of Esther come in and her eunuchs, and declare it to her, and the queen is exceedingly pained, and sendeth garments to clothe Mordecai, and to turn aside his sackcloth from off him, and he hath not received them.     ingressae sunt autem puellae Hester et eunuchi nuntiaveruntque ei quod audiens consternata est et misit vestem ut ablato sacco induerent eum quam accipere noluit
 
5.    Then Esther called for Hathach, one of the king's eunuchs, whom he had appointed to attend her, and commanded him to go to Mordecai, to find out what this was, and why it was.     Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king's chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.     ותקרא  אסתר  להתך 
מסריסי  המלך  אשר
העמיד  לפניה
ותצוהו  על־מרדכי
לדעת  מה־זה
ועל־מה־זה׃
    VThQUr'a 'aSThUr LHThK MSUrYSY HMLK 'aShUr H'yMYD LPhNYH VThTShVHV 'yL-MUrDKY LD'yTh MH-ZH V'yL-MH-ZH.     And Esther calleth to Hatach, of the eunuchs of the king, whom he hath stationed before her, and giveth him a charge for Mordecai, to know what this is, and wherefore this is.     accitoque Athac eunucho quem rex ministrum ei dederat praecepit ut iret ad Mardocheum et disceret ab eo cur hoc faceret
 
6.    So Hathach went out to Mordecai, to city square which was before the king's gate.     So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king's gate.     ויצא  התך  אל־מרדכי 
אל־רחוב  העיר  אשר
לפני  שער־המלך׃
    VYTSh'a HThK 'aL-MUrDKY 'aL-UrChVB H'yYUr 'aShUr LPhNY Sh'yUr-HMLK.     And Hatach goeth out unto Mordecai, unto a broad place of the city, that is before the gate of the king,     egressusque Athac ivit ad Mardocheum stantem in platea civitatis ante ostium palatii
 
7.    Mordecai told him of all that had happened to him, and the exact sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the destruction of the Jews.     And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.     ויגד־לו  מרדכי  את

    V'aTh-PhThShGN KThB-HDTh 'aShUr-NThN BShVShN LHShMYDM NThN LV LHUr'aVTh 'aTh-'aSThUr VLHGYD LH VLTShVVTh 'yLYH LBV'a 'aL-HMLK LHThChNN-LV VLBQSh MLPhNYV 'yL- 'yMH.     and the copy of the writing of the law that had been given in Shushan to destroy them he hath given to him, to shew Esther, and to declare it to her, and to lay a charge on her to go in unto the king, to make supplication to him, and to seek from before him, for her people.     exemplarque edicti quod pendebat in Susis dedit ei ut reginae ostenderet et moneret eam ut intraret ad regem et deprecaretur eum pro populo suo
 
9.    Hathach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.     And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.     ויבוא  התך  ויגד

    VYBV'a HThK VYGD L'aSThUr 'aTh DBUrY MUrDKY.     And Hatach cometh in and declareth to Esther the words of Mordecai,     regressus Athac nuntiavit Hester omnia quae Mardocheus dixerat
 
10.    Then Esther spoke to Hathach, and gave him a message to Mordecai:     Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;     ותאמר  אסתר  להתך 
ותצוהו  אל־מרדכי׃
    VTh'aMUr 'aSThUr LHThK VThTShVHV 'aL-MUrDKY.     and Esther speaketh to Hatach, and chargeth him for Mordecai:     quae respondit ei et iussit ut diceret Mardocheo
 
11.    "All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, know, that whoever, whether man or woman, comes to the king into the inner court without being called, there is one law for him, that he be put to death, except those to whom the king might hold out the golden scepter, that he may live. I have not been called to come in to the king these thirty days."     All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.     כל־עבדי  המלך

12.    They told to Mordecai Esther's words.     And they told to Mordecai Esther's words.     ויגידו  למרדכי  את 
דברי  אסתר׃
    VYGYDV LMUrDKY 'aTh DBUrY 'aSThUr.     And they declare to Mordecai the words of Esther,     quod cum audisset Mardocheus
 
13.    Then Mordecai asked them return answer to Esther, "Don't think to yourself that you will escape in the king's house any more than all the Jews.     Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.     ויאמר  מרדכי  להשיב 
אל־אסתר  אל־תדמי
בנפשך  להמלט
בית־המלך  מכל־
היהודים׃
    VY'aMUr MUrDKY LHShYB 'aL-'aSThUr 'aL-ThDMY BNPhShK LHMLT BYTh-HMLK MKL- HYHVDYM.     and Mordecai speaketh to send back unto Esther: `Do not think in thy soul to be delivered in the house of the king, more than all the Jews,     rursum mandavit Hester dicens ne putes quod animam tuam tantum liberes quia in domo regis es prae cunctis Iudaeis
 
14.    For if you remain silent now, then relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from another place, but you and your father's house will perish. Who knows if you haven't come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"     For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?     כי  אם־החרש  תחרישי 
בעת  הזאת  רוח
והצלה  יעמוד
ליהודים  ממקום  אחר
ואת  ובית־אביך
תאבדו  ומי  יודע
אם־לעת  כזאת  הגעת
למלכות׃
    KY 'aM-HChUrSh ThChUrYShY B'yTh HZ'aTh UrVCh VHTShLH Y'yMVD LYHVDYM MMQVM 'aChUr V'aTh VBYTh-'aBYK Th'aBDV VMY YVD'y 'aM-L'yTh KZ'aTh HG'yTh LMLKVTh.     but if thou keep entirely silent at this time, respite and deliverance remaineth to the Jews from another place, and thou and the house of thy fathers are destroyed; and who knoweth whether for a time like this thou hast come to the kingdom?`     si enim nunc silueris per aliam occasionem liberabuntur Iudaei et tu et domus patris tui peribitis et quis novit utrum idcirco ad regnum veneris ut in tali tempore parareris
 
15.    Then Esther asked them to answer Mordecai,     Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,     ותאמר  אסתר  להשיב 
אל־מרדכי׃
    VTh'aMUr 'aSThUr LHShYB 'aL-MUrDKY.     And Esther speaketh to send back unto Mordecai:     rursumque Hester haec Mardocheo verba mandavit
 
16.    "Go, gather together all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day. I and my maidens will also fast the same way. Then I will go in to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish."     Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.     לך  כנוס
