1.    "Now these are the ordinances which you shall set before them.     Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them.     ואלה  המשפטים  אשר 
תשים  לפניהם׃
    V'aLH HMShPhTYM 'aShUr ThShYM LPhNYHM.     `And these are the judgments which thou dost set before them:     haec sunt iudicia quae propones eis
 
2.    "If you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve six years and in the seventh he shall go out free without paying anything.     If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.     כי  תקנה  עבד  עברי 
שש  שנים  יעבד
ובשבעת  יצא  לחפשי
חנם׃
    KY ThQNH 'yBD 'yBUrY ShSh ShNYM Y'yBD VBShB'yTh YTSh'a LChPhShY ChNM.     `When thou buyest a Hebrew servant -- six years he doth serve, and in the seventh he goeth out as a freeman for nought;     si emeris servum hebraeum sex annis serviet tibi in septimo egredietur liber gratis
 
3.    If he comes in by himself, he shall go out by himself. If he is married, then his wife shall go out with him.     If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him.     אם־בגפו  יבא  בגפו 
יצא  אם־בעל  אשה
הוא  ויצאה  אשתו
עמו׃
    'aM-BGPhV YB'a BGPhV YTSh'a 'aM-B'yL 'aShH HV'a VYTSh'aH 'aShThV 'yMV.     if by himself he cometh in, by himself he goeth out; if he is owner of a wife, then his wife hath gone out with him;     cum quali veste intraverit cum tali exeat si habens uxorem et uxor egredietur simul
 
4.    If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.     If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.     אם־אדניו  יתן־לו 
אשה  וילדה־לו  בנים
או  בנות  האשה
וילדיה  תהיה
לאדניה  והוא  יצא
בגפו׃
    'aM-'aDNYV YThN-LV 'aShH VYLDH-LV BNYM 'aV BNVTh H'aShH VYLDYH ThHYH L'aDNYH VHV'a YTSh'a BGPhV.     if his lord give to him a wife, and she hath borne to him sons or daughters -- the wife and her children are her lord`s, and he goeth out by himself.     sin autem dominus dederit illi uxorem et peperit filios et filias mulier et liberi eius erunt domini sui ipse vero exibit cum vestitu suo
 
5.    But if the servant shall plainly say, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children. I will not go out free;'     And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free:     ואם־אמר  יאמר  העבד 
אהבתי  את־אדני
את־אשתי  ואת־בני
לא  אצא  חפשי׃
    V'aM-'aMUr Y'aMUr H'yBD 'aHBThY 'aTh-'aDNY 'aTh-'aShThY V'aTh-BNY L'a 'aTSh'a ChPhShY.     `And if the servant really say: I have loved my lord, my wife, and my sons -- I do not go out free;     quod si dixerit servus diligo dominum meum et uxorem ac liberos non egrediar liber
 
6.    then his master shall bring him to God, and shall bring him to the door or to the doorpost, and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall serve him for ever.     Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.     והגישו  אדניו 
אל־האלהים  והגישו
אל־הדלת  או
אל־המזוזה  ורצע
אדניו  את־אזנו
במרצע  ועבדו  לעלם׃
    VHGYShV 'aDNYV 'aL-H'aLHYM VHGYShV 'aL-HDLTh 'aV 'aL-HMZVZH VUrTSh'y 'aDNYV 'aTh-'aZNV BMUrTSh'y V'yBDV L'yLM.     then hath his lord brought him nigh unto God, and hath brought him nigh unto the door, or unto the side-post, and his lord hath bored his ear with an awl, and he hath served him -- to the age.     offeret eum dominus diis et adplicabitur ad ostium et postes perforabitque aurem eius subula et erit ei servus in saeculum
 
7.    "If a man sells his daughter to be a female servant, she shall not go out as the male servants do.     And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.     וכי־ימכר  איש 
את־בתו  לאמה  לא
תצא  כצאת  העבדים׃
    VKY-YMKUr 'aYSh 'aTh-BThV L'aMH L'a ThTSh'a KTSh'aTh H'yBDYM.     `And when a man selleth his daughter for a handmaid, she doth not go out according to the going out of the men-servants;     si quis vendiderit filiam suam in famulam non egredietur sicut ancillae exire consuerunt
 
8.    If she doesn't please her master, who has married her to himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, seeing he has dealt deceitfully with her.     If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her.     אם־רעה  בעיני 
אדניה  אשר־לא  יעדה
והפדה  לעם  נכרי
לא־ימשל  למכרה
בבגדו־בה׃
    'aM-Ur'yH B'yYNY 'aDNYH 'aShUr-L'a Y'yDH VHPhDH L'yM NKUrY L'a-YMShL LMKUrH BBGDV-BH.     if evil in the eyes of her lord, so that he hath not betrothed her, then he hath let her be ransomed; to a strange people he hath not power to sell her, in his dealing treacherously with her.     si displicuerit oculis domini sui cui tradita fuerit dimittet eam populo autem alieno vendendi non habet potestatem si spreverit eam
 
9.    If he marries her to his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters.     And if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters.     ואם־לבנו  ייעדנה 
כמשפט  הבנות
יעשה־לה׃
    V'aM-LBNV YY'yDNH KMShPhT HBNVTh Y'yShH-LH.     `And if to his son he betroth her, according to the right of daughters he doth to her.     sin autem filio suo desponderit eam iuxta morem filiarum faciet illi
 
10.    If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, and her marital rights.     If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.     אם־אחרת  יקח־לו 
שארה  כסותה  וענתה
לא  יגרע׃
    'aM-'aChUrTh YQCh-LV Sh'aUrH KSVThH V'yNThH L'a YGUr'y.     `If another woman he take for him, her food, her covering, and her habitation, he doth not withdraw;     quod si alteram ei acceperit providebit puellae nuptias et vestimenta et pretium pudicitiae non negabit
 
11.    If he doesn't do these three things for her, she may go free without paying any money.     And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money.     ואם־שלש־אלה  לא 
יעשה  לה  ויצאה  חנם
אין  כסף׃
    V'aM-ShLSh-'aLH L'a Y'yShH LH VYTSh'aH ChNM 'aYN KSPh.     and if these three he do not to her, then she hath gone out for nought, without money.     si tria ista non fecerit egredietur gratis absque pecunia
 
12.    "One who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death,     He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death.     מכה  איש  ומת  מות 
יומת׃
    MKH 'aYSh VMTh MVTh YVMTh.     `He who smiteth a man so that he hath died, is certainly put to death;     qui percusserit hominem volens occidere morte moriatur
 
13.    but not if it is unintentional, but God allows it to happen: then I will appoint you a place where he shall flee.     And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee.     ואשר  לא  צדה 
והאלהים  אנה  לידו
ושמתי  לך  מקום  אשר
ינוס  שמה׃
    V'aShUr L'a TShDH VH'aLHYM 'aNH LYDV VShMThY LK MQVM 'aShUr YNVS ShMH.     as to him who hath not laid wait, and God hath brought to his hand, I have even set for thee a place whither he doth flee.     qui autem non est insidiatus sed Deus illum tradidit in manu eius constituam tibi locum quo fugere debeat
 
14.    If a man schemes and comes presumptuously on his neighbor to kill him, you shall take him from my altar, that he may die.     But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die.     וכי־יזד  איש 
על־רעהו  להרגו
בערמה  מעם  מזבחי
תקחנו  למות׃
    VKY-YZD 'aYSh 'yL-Ur'yHV LHUrGV B'yUrMH M'yM MZBChY ThQChNV LMVTh.     `And when a man doth presume against his neighbour to slay him with subtilty, from Mine altar thou dost take him to die.     si quis de industria occiderit proximum suum et per insidias ab altari meo evelles eum ut moriatur
 
15.    "Anyone who attacks his father or his mother shall be surely put to death.     And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.     ומכה  אביו  ואמו 
מות  יומת׃
    VMKH 'aBYV V'aMV MVTh YVMTh.     `And he who smiteth his father or his mother is certainly put to death.     qui percusserit patrem suum et matrem morte moriatur
 
16.    "Anyone who kidnaps someone and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.     And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.     וגנב  איש  ומכרו 
ונמצא  בידו  מות
יומת׃
    VGNB 'aYSh VMKUrV VNMTSh'a BYDV MVTh YVMTh.     `And he who stealeth a man, and hath sold him, and he hath been found in his hand, is certainly put to death.     qui furatus fuerit hominem et vendiderit eum convictus noxae morte moriatur
 
17.    "Anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.     And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.     ומקלל  אביו  ואמו 
מות  יומת׃
    VMQLL 'aBYV V'aMV MVTh YVMTh.     `And he who is reviling his father or his mother is certainly put to death.     qui maledixerit patri suo et matri morte moriatur
 
18.    "If men quarrel and one strikes the other with a stone, or with his fist, and he doesn't die, but is confined to bed;     And if men strive together, and one smite another with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed:     וכי־יריבן  אנשים 
והכה־איש  את־רעהו
באבן  או  באגרף  ולא
ימות  ונפל  למשכב׃
    VKY-YUrYBN 'aNShYM VHKH-'aYSh 'aTh-Ur'yHV B'aBN 'aV B'aGUrPh VL'a YMVTh VNPhL LMShKB.     `And when men contend, and a man hath smitten his neighbour with a stone, or with the fist, and he die not, but hath fallen on the bed;     si rixati fuerint viri et percusserit alter proximum suum lapide vel pugno et ille mortuus non fuerit sed iacuerit in lectulo
 
19.    if he rises again and walks around with his staff, then he who struck him shall be cleared: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall provide for his healing until he is thoroughly healed.     If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be quit: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed.     אם־יקום  והתהלך 
בחוץ  על־משענתו
ונקה  המכה  רק  שבתו
יתן  ורפא  ירפא׃
    'aM-YQVM VHThHLK BChVTSh 'yL-MSh'yNThV VNQH HMKH UrQ ShBThV YThN VUrPh'a YUrPh'a.     if he rise, and hath gone up and down without on his staff, then hath the smiter been acquitted; only his cessation he giveth, and he is thoroughly healed.     si surrexerit et ambulaverit foris super baculum suum innocens erit qui percussit ita tamen ut operas eius et inpensas in medicos restituat
 
20.    "If a man strikes his servant or his maid with a rod, and he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished.     And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished.     וכי־יכה  איש 
את־עבדו  או
את־אמתו  בשבט  ומת
תחת  ידו  נקם  ינקם׃
    VKY-YKH 'aYSh 'aTh-'yBDV 'aV 'aTh-'aMThV BShBT VMTh ThChTh YDV NQM YNQM.     `And when a man smiteth his man-servant or his handmaid, with a rod, and he hath died under his hand -- he is certainly avenged;     qui percusserit servum suum vel ancillam virga et mortui fuerint in manibus eius criminis reus erit
 
21.    Notwithstanding, if he gets up after a day or two, he shall not be punished, for he is his property.     Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.     אך  אם־יום  או 
יומים  יעמד  לא  יקם
כי  כספו  הוא׃
    'aK 'aM-YVM 'aV YVMYM Y'yMD L'a YQM KY KSPhV HV'a.     only if he remain a day, or two days, he is not avenged, for he is his money.     sin autem uno die supervixerit vel duobus non subiacebit poenae quia pecunia illius est
 
22.    "If men fight and hurt a pregnant woman so that she gives birth prematurely, and yet no harm follows, he shall be surely fined as much as the woman's husband demands and the judges allow.     If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.     וכי־ינצו  אנשים 
ונגפו  אשה  הרה
ויצאו  ילדיה  ולא
יהיה  אסון  ענוש
יענש  כאשר  ישית
עליו  בעל  האשה
ונתן  בפללים׃
    VKY-YNTShV 'aNShYM VNGPhV 'aShH HUrH VYTSh'aV YLDYH VL'a YHYH 'aSVN 'yNVSh Y'yNSh K'aShUr YShYTh 'yLYV B'yL H'aShH VNThN BPhLLYM.     `And when men strive, and have smitten a pregnant woman, and her children have come out, and there is no mischief, he is certainly fined, as the husband of the woman doth lay upon him, and he hath given through the judges;     si rixati fuerint viri et percusserit quis mulierem praegnantem et abortivum quidem fecerit sed ipsa vixerit subiacebit damno quantum expetierit maritus mulieris et arbitri iudicarint
 
23.    But if any harm follows, then you must take life for life,     And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life,     ואם־אסון  יהיה 
ונתתה  נפש  תחת
נפש׃
    V'aM-'aSVN YHYH VNThThH NPhSh ThChTh NPhSh.     and if there is mischief, then thou hast given life for life,     sin autem mors eius fuerit subsecuta reddet animam pro anima
 
24.    eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,     Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,     עין  תחת  עין  שן 
תחת  שן  יד  תחת  יד
רגל  תחת  רגל׃
    'yYN ThChTh 'yYN ShN ThChTh ShN YD ThChTh YD UrGL ThChTh UrGL.     eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,     oculum pro oculo dentem pro dente manum pro manu pedem pro pede
 
25.    burning for burning, wound for wound, and bruise for bruise.     Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.     כויה  תחת  כויה  פצע

חבורה׃
    KVYH ThChTh KVYH PhTSh'y ThChTh PhTSh'y ChBVUrH ThChTh ChBVUrH.     burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.     adustionem pro adustione vulnus pro vulnere livorem pro livore
 
26.    "If a man strikes his servant's eye, or his maid's eye, and destroys it, he shall let him go free for his eye's sake.     And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake.     וכי־יכה  איש 
את־עין  עבדו
או־את־עין  אמתו
ושחתה  לחפשי
ישלחנו  תחת  עינו׃
    VKY-YKH 'aYSh 'aTh-'yYN 'yBDV 'aV-'aTh-'yYN 'aMThV VShChThH LChPhShY YShLChNV ThChTh 'yYNV.     `And when a man smiteth the eye of his man-servant, or the eye of his handmaid, and hath destroyed it, as a freeman he doth send him away for his eye;     si percusserit quispiam oculum servi sui aut ancillae et luscos eos fecerit dimittet liberos pro oculo quem eruit
 
27.    If he strikes out his male servant's tooth, or his female servant's tooth, he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake.     And if he smite out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake.     ואם־שן  עבדו  או־שן 
אמתו  יפיל  לחפשי
ישלחנו  תחת  שנו׃
    V'aM-ShN 'yBDV 'aV-ShN 'aMThV YPhYL LChPhShY YShLChNV ThChTh ShNV.     and if a tooth of his man-servant or a tooth of his handmaid he knock out, as a freeman he doth send him away for his tooth.     dentem quoque si excusserit servo vel ancillae suae similiter dimittet eos liberos
 
28.    "If a bull gores a man or a woman to death, the bull shall surely be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the bull shall not be held responsible.     If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit.     וכי־יגח  שור 
את־איש  או  את־אשה
ומת  סקול  יסקל
השור  ולא  יאכל  את־
בשרו  ובעל  השור
נקי׃
    VKY-YGCh ShVUr 'aTh-'aYSh 'aV 'aTh-'aShH VMTh SQVL YSQL HShVUr VL'a Y'aKL 'aTh- BShUrV VB'yL HShVUr NQY.     `And when an ox doth gore man or woman, and they have died, the ox is certainly stoned, and his flesh is not eaten, and the owner of the ox is acquitted;     si bos cornu petierit virum aut mulierem et mortui fuerint lapidibus obruetur et non comedentur carnes eius dominusque bovis innocens erit
 
29.    But if the bull had a habit of goring in the past, and it has been testified to its owner, and he has not kept it in, but it has killed a man or a woman, the bull shall be stoned, and its owner shall also be put to death.     But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death.     ואם  שור  נגח  הוא 
מתמל  שלשם  והועד
בבעליו  ולא  ישמרנו
והמית  איש  או  אשה
השור  יסקל
וגם־בעליו  יומת׃
    V'aM ShVUr NGCh HV'a MThML ShLShM VHV'yD BB'yLYV VL'a YShMUrNV VHMYTh 'aYSh 'aV 'aShH HShVUr YSQL VGM-B'yLYV YVMTh.     and if the ox is one accustomed to gore heretofore, and it hath been testified to its owner, and he doth not watch it, and it hath put to death a man or woman, the ox is stoned, and its owner also is put to death.     quod si bos cornipeta fuerit ab heri et nudius tertius et contestati sunt dominum eius nec reclusit eum occideritque virum aut mulierem et bos lapidibus obruetur et dominum illius occident
 
30.    If a ransom is laid on him, then he shall give for the redemption of his life whatever is laid on him.     If there be laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatsoever is laid upon him.     אם־כפר  יושת  עליו 
ונתן  פדין  נפשו
ככל  אשר־יושת
עליו׃
    'aM-KPhUr YVShTh 'yLYV VNThN PhDYN NPhShV KKL 'aShUr-YVShTh 'yLYV.     `If atonement is laid upon him, then he hath given the ransom of his life, according to all that is laid upon him;     quod si pretium ei fuerit inpositum dabit pro anima sua quicquid fuerit postulatus
 
31.    Whether it has gored a son or has gored a daughter, according to this judgment it shall be done to him.     Whether he have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him.     או־בן  יגח  או־בת 
יגח  כמשפט  הזה
יעשה  לו׃
    'aV-BN YGCh 'aV-BTh YGCh KMShPhT HZH Y'yShH LV.     whether it gore a son or gore a daughter, according to this judgment it is done to him.     filium quoque et filiam si cornu percusserit simili sententiae subiacebit
 
32.    If the bull gores a male servant or a female servant, thirty shekels of silver shall be given to their master, and the ox shall be stoned.     If the ox shall push a manservant or a maidservant; he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.     אם־עבד  יגח  השור 
או  אמה  כסף  שלשים
שקלים  יתן  לאדניו
והשור  יסקל׃
    'aM-'yBD YGCh HShVUr 'aV 'aMH KSPh ShLShYM ShQLYM YThN L'aDNYV VHShVUr YSQL.     `If the ox gore a man-servant or a handmaid, thirty silver shekels he doth give to their lord, and the ox is stoned.     si servum ancillamque invaserit triginta siclos argenti dabit domino bos vero lapidibus opprimetur
 
33.    "If a man opens a pit, or if a man digs a pit and doesn't cover it, and a bull or a donkey falls into it,     And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein;     וכי־יפתח  איש  בור 
או  כי־יכרה  איש  בר
ולא  יכסנו
ונפל־שמה  שור  או
חמור׃
    VKY-YPhThCh 'aYSh BVUr 'aV KY-YKUrH 'aYSh BUr VL'a YKSNV VNPhL-ShMH ShVUr 'aV ChMVUr.     `And when a man doth open a pit, or when a man doth dig a pit, and doth not cover it, and an ox or ass hath fallen thither, --     si quis aperuerit cisternam et foderit et non operuerit eam cecideritque bos vel asinus in eam
 
34.    the owner of the pit shall make it good. He shall give money to its owner, and the dead animal shall be his.     The owner of the pit shall make it good, and give money unto the owner of them; and the dead beast shall be his.     בעל  הבור  ישלם  כסף

יהיה־לו׃
    B'yL HBVUr YShLM KSPh YShYB LB'yLYV VHMTh YHYH-LV.     the owner of the pit doth repay, money he doth give back to its owner, and the dead is his.     dominus cisternae reddet pretium iumentorum quod autem mortuum est ipsius erit
 
35.    "If one man's bull injures another's, so that it dies, then they shall sell the live bull, and divide its price; and they shall also divide the dead animal.     And if one man's ox hurt another's, that he die; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money of it; and the dead ox also they shall divide.     וכי־יגף  שור־איש 
את־שור  רעהו  ומת
ומכרו  את־השור  החי
וחצו  את־  כספו  וגם
את־המת  יחצון׃
    VKY-YGPh ShVUr-'aYSh 'aTh-ShVUr Ur'yHV VMTh VMKUrV 'aTh-HShVUr HChY VChTShV 'aTh- KSPhV VGM 'aTh-HMTh YChTShVN.     `And when a man`s ox doth smite the ox of his neighbour, and it hath died, then they have sold the living ox, and halved its money, and also the dead one they do halve;     si bos alienus bovem alterius vulnerarit et ille mortuus fuerit vendent bovem vivum et divident pretium cadaver autem mortui inter se dispertient
 
36.    Or if it is known that the bull was in the habit of goring in the past, and its owner has not kept it in, he shall surely pay bull for bull, and the dead animal shall be his own.     Or if it be known that the ox hath used to push in time past, and his owner hath not kept him in; he shall surely pay ox for ox; and the dead shall be his own.     או  נודע  כי  שור

    'aV NVD'y KY ShVUr NGCh HV'a MThMVL ShLShM VL'a YShMUrNV B'yLYV ShLM YShLM ShVUr ThChTh HShVUr VHMTh YHYH-LV.     or, it hath been known that the ox is one accustomed to gore heretofore, and its owner doth not watch it, he certainly repayeth ox for ox, and the dead is his.     sin autem sciebat quod bos cornipeta esset ab heri et nudius tertius et non custodivit eum dominus suus reddet bovem pro bove et cadaver integrum accipiet
