1.    וישמע  יתרו  כהן 
מדין  חתן  משה  את
כל־אשר  עשה  אלהים
למשה  ולישראל  עמו
כי־הוציא  יהוה
את־ישראל  ממצרים׃
    When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt;     Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, how that Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.     Now news came to Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, of all God had done for Moses and for Israel his people, and how the Lord had taken Israel out of Egypt.
 
2.    ויקח  יתרו  חתן  משה 
את־צפרה  אשת  משה
אחר  שלוחיה׃
    Then Jethro, Moses' father in law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,     Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, received Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her away,     And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her away,
 
3.    ואת  שני  בניה  אשר 
שם  האחד  גרשם  כי
אמר  גר  הייתי  בארץ
נכריה׃
    And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:     and her two sons. The name of one son was Gershom,{"Gershom" sounds like the Hebrew for "an alien there."} for Moses said, "I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land".     And her two sons, one of whom was named Gershom, for he said, I have been living in a strange land:
 
4.    ושם  האחד  אליעזר 
כי־אלהי  אבי  בעזרי
ויצלני  מחרב  פרעה׃
    And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:     The name of the other was Eliezer,{Eliezer means "God is my helper."} for he said, "My father's God was my help and delivered me from Pharaoh's sword."     And the name of the other was Eliezer, for he said, The God of my father was my help, and kept me safe from the sword of Pharaoh:
 
5.    ויבא  יתרו  חתן  משה 
ובניו  ואשתו
אל־משה  אל־המדבר
אשר־הוא  חנה  שם  הר
האלהים׃
    And Jethro, Moses' father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:     Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness where he was encamped, at the Mountain of God.     And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to where Moses had put up his tent in the waste land, by the mountain of God.
 
6.    ויאמר  אל־משה  אני 
חתנך  יתרו  בא  אליך
ואשתך  ושני  בניה
עמה׃
    And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.     He said to Moses, "I, your father-in-law Jethro, have come to you with your wife, and her two sons with her."     And he said to Moses, I, your father-in-law, have come to you, with your wife and your two sons.
 
7.    ויצא  משה  לקראת 
חתנו  וישתחו
וישק־לו  וישאלו
איש־לרעהו  לשלום
ויבאו  האהלה׃
    And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.     Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed and kissed him. They asked each other of their welfare, and they came into the tent.     And Moses went out to his father-in-law, and went down on his face before him and gave him a kiss; and they said to one another, Are you well? and they came into the tent.
 
8.    ויספר  משה  לחתנו 
את  כל־אשר  עשה
יהוה  לפרעה
ולמצרים  על  אודת
ישראל  את  כל־התלאה
אשר  מצאתם  בדרך
ויצלם  יהוה׃
    And Moses told his father in law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.     Moses told his father-in-law all that Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the hardships that had come on them on the way, and how Yahweh delivered them.     And Moses gave his father-in-law an account of all the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians because of Israel, and of all the troubles which had come on them by the way, and how the Lord had given them salvation.
 
9.    ויחד  יתרו  על 
כל־הטובה  אשר־עשה
יהוה  לישראל  אשר
הצילו  מיד  מצרים׃
    And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.     Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which Yahweh had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.     And Jethro was glad because the Lord had been good to Israel, freeing them from the power of the Egyptians.
 
10.    ויאמר  יתרו  ברוך 
יהוה  אשר  הציל
אתכם  מיד  מצרים
ומיד  פרעה  אשר
הציל  את־העם  מתחת
יד־מצרים׃
    And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.     Jethro said, "Blessed be Yahweh, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.     And Jethro said, Praise be to the Lord, who has taken you out of the hand of Pharaoh and out of the hand of the Egyptians; freeing the people from the yoke of the Egyptians.
 
11.    עתה  ידעתי  כי־גדול 
יהוה  מכל־האלהים
כי  בדבר  אשר  זדו
עליהם׃
    Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.     Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods because of the thing in which they dealt arrogantly against them."     Now I am certain that the Lord is greater than all gods, for he has overcome them in their pride.
 
12.    ויקח  יתרו  חתן  משה 
עלה  וזבחים  לאלהים
ויבא  אהרן  וכל
זקני  ישראל
לאכל־לחם  עם־חתן
משה  לפני  האלהים׃
    And Jethro, Moses' father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father in law before God.     Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God. Aaron came with all of the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God.     Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, made a burned offering to God: and Aaron came, with the chiefs of Israel, and had a meal with Moses' father-in-law, before God.
 
13.    ויהי  ממחרת  וישב 
משה  לשפט  את־העם
ויעמד  העם  על־משה
מן־הבקר  עד־  הערב׃
    And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.     It happened on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from the morning to the evening.     Now on the day after, Moses took his seat to give decisions for the people: and the people were waiting before Moses from morning till evening.
 
14.    וירא  חתן  משה  את 
כל־אשר־הוא  עשה
לעם  ויאמר  מה־הדבר
הזה  אשר  אתה  עשה
לעם  מדוע  אתה  יושב
לבדך  וכל־העם  נצב
עליך  מן־בקר
עד־ערב׃
    And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?     When Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, "What is this thing that you do for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning to evening?"     And when Moses' father-in-law saw all he was doing, he said, What is this you are doing for the people? why are you seated here by yourself, with all the people waiting before you from morning till evening?
 
15.    ויאמר  משה  לחתנו 
כי־יבא  אלי  העם
לדרש  אלהים׃
    And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:     Moses said to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me to inquire of God.     And Moses said to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to get directions from God:
 
16.    כי־יהיה  להם  דבר 
בא  אלי  ושפטתי  בין
איש  ובין  רעהו
והודעתי  את־  חקי
האלהים
ואת־תורתיו׃
    When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.     When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws."     And if they have any question between themselves, they come to me, and I am judge between a man and his neighbour, and I give them the orders and laws of God.
 
17.    ויאמר  חתן  משה 
אליו  לא־טוב  הדבר
אשר  אתה  עשה׃
    And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.     Moses' father-in-law said to him, "The thing that you do is not good.     And Moses' father-in-law said to him, What you are doing is not good.
 
18.    נבל  תבל  גם־אתה 
גם־העם  הזה  אשר
עמך  כי־כבד  ממך
הדבר  לא־תוכל  עשהו
לבדך׃
    Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.     You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.     Your strength and that of the people will be completely used up: this work is more than you are able to do by yourself.
 
19.    עתה  שמע  בקלי 
איעצך  ויהי  אלהים
עמך  היה  אתה  לעם
מול  האלהים  והבאת
אתה  את־הדברים
אל־האלהים׃
    Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:     Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God.     Give ear now to my suggestion, and may God be with you: you are to be the people's representative before God, taking their causes to him:
 
20.    והזהרתה  אתהם 
את־החקים
ואת־התורת  והודעת
להם  את־הדרך  ילכו
בה  ואת־המעשה  אשר
יעשון׃
    And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.     You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.     Teaching them his rules and his laws, guiding them in the way they have to go, and making clear to them the work they have to do.
 
21.    ואתה  תחזה  מכל־העם 
אנשי־חיל  יראי
אלהים  אנשי  אמת
שנאי  בצע  ושמת
עלהם  שרי  אלפים
שרי  מאות  שרי
חמשים  ושרי  עשרת׃
    Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:     Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.     But for the rest, take from among the people able men, such as have the fear of God, true men hating profits wrongly made; and put such men over them, to be captains of thousands, captains of hundreds and of fifties and of tens;
 
22.    ושפטו  את־העם 
בכל־עת  והיה
כל־הדבר  הגדל
יביאו  אליך
וכל־הדבר  הקטן
ישפטו־הם  והקל
מעליך  ונשאו  אתך׃
    And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.     Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.     And let them be judges in the causes of the people at all times: and let them put before you all important questions, but in small things let them give decisions themselves: in this way, it will be less hard for you, and they will take the weight off you.
 
23.    אם  את־הדבר  הזה 
תעשה  וצוך  אלהים
ויכלת  עמד  וגם
כל־העם  הזה  על־
מקמו  יבא  בשלום׃
    If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.     If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all of these people also will go to their place in peace."     If you do this, and God gives approval, then you will be able to go on without weariness, and all this people will go to their tents in peace.
 
24.    וישמע  משה  לקול 
חתנו  ויעש  כל  אשר
אמר׃
    So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.     So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.     So Moses took note of the words of his father-in-law, and did as he had said.
 
25.    ויבחר  משה 
אנשי־חיל
מכל־ישראל  ויתן
אתם  ראשים  על־העם
שרי  אלפים  שרי
מאות  שרי  חמשים
ושרי  עשרת׃
    And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.     Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.     And he made selection of able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, captains of thousands, captains of hundreds and of fifties and of tens.
 
26.    ושפטו  את־העם 
בכל־עת  את־הדבר
הקשה  יביאון
אל־משה  וכל־הדבר
הקטן  ישפוטו  הם׃
    And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.     They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard causes to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.     And they were judges in the causes of the people at all times: the hard questions they put before Moses; but on every small point they gave decisions themselves.
 
27.    וישלח  משה  את־חתנו 
וילך  לו  אל־ארצו׃
    And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.     Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.     And Moses let his father-in-law go away, and he went back to his land.
