1.    וידבר  יהוה  אל־משה 
ואל־אהרן  לאמר
אלהם׃
    And the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them,     Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,     And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron,
 
2.    דברו  אל־בני  ישראל 
לאמר  זאת  החיה  אשר
תאכלו  מכל־הבהמה
אשר  על־  הארץ׃
    Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.     "Speak to the children of Israel, saying, 'These are the living things which you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth.     Say to the children of Israel: These are the living things which you may have for food among all the beasts on the earth.
 
3.    כל  מפרסת  פרסה 
ושסעת  שסע  פרסת
מעלת  גרה  בבהמה
אתה  תאכלו׃
    Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.     Whatever parts the hoof, and is cloven-footed, and chews the cud among the animals, that you may eat.     You may have as food any beast which has a division in the horn of its foot, and whose food comes back into its mouth to be crushed again.
 
4.    אך  את־זה  לא  תאכלו 
ממעלי  הגרה
וממפרסי  הפרסה
את־הגמל  כי־מעלה
גרה  הוא  ופרסה
איננו  מפריס  טמא
הוא  לכם׃
    Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.     "'Nevertheless these you shall not eat of those that chew the cud, or of those who part the hoof: the camel, because he chews the cud but doesn't have a parted hoof, he is unclean to you.     But, at the same time, of those beasts, you may not take for food the camel, because its food comes back but the horn of its foot is not parted in two; it is unclean to you.
 
5.    ואת־השפן  כי־מעלה 
גרה  הוא  ופרסה  לא
יפריס  טמא  הוא
לכם׃
    And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.     The coney, because he chews the cud but doesn't have a parted hoof, he is unclean to you.     And the rock-badger, for the same reason, is unclean to you.
 
6.    ואת־הארנבת 
כי־מעלת  גרה  הוא
ופרסה  לא  הפריסה
טמאה  הוא  לכם׃
    And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.     The hare, because she chews the cud but doesn't part the hoof, she is unclean to you.     And the hare, because the horn of its foot is not parted in two, is unclean to you.
 
7.    ואת־החזיר 
כי־מפריס  פרסה  הוא
ושסע  שסע  פרסה
והוא  גרה  לא־יגר
טמא  הוא  לכם׃
    And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.     The pig, because he has a split hoof, and is cloven-footed, but doesn't chew the cud, he is unclean to you.     And the pig is unclean to you, because though the horn of its foot is parted, its food does not come back.
 
8.    מבשרם  לא  תאכלו 
ובנבלתם  לא  תגעו
טמאים  הם  לכם׃
    Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.     Of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch; they are unclean to you.     Their flesh may not be used for food, and their dead bodies may not even be touched; they are unclean to you.
 
9.    את־זה  תאכלו  מכל 
אשר  במים  כל
אשר־לו  סנפיר
וקשקשת  במים  בימים
ובנחלים  אתם
תאכלו׃
    These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.     "'These you may eat of all that are in the waters: whatever has fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, that you may eat.     These you may have for food of all things living in the water: anything living in the water, in the seas or rivers, which has special parts for swimming and skin formed of thin plates, may be used for food.
 
10.    וכל  אשר  אין־לו 
סנפיר  וקשקשת
בימים  ובנחלים  מכל
שרץ  המים  ומכל  נפש
החיה  אשר  במים  שקץ
הם  לכם׃
    And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:     All that don't have fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of all the living creatures that are in the waters, they are an abomination to you,     All other things living and moving in the water, in the sea or in the rivers, are a disgusting thing to you;
 
11.    ושקץ  יהיו  לכם 
מבשרם  לא  תאכלו
ואת־נבלתם  תשקצו׃
    They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.     and you detest them. You shall not eat of their flesh, and you shall detest their carcasses.     They may not be used for food, and their dead bodies are disgusting to you.
 
12.    כל  אשר  אין־לו 
סנפיר  וקשקשת  במים
שקץ  הוא  לכם׃
    Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.     Whatever has no fins nor scales in the waters, that is an abomination to you.     Anything in the water which has no special parts for swimming and no thin plates on its skin is disgusting to you.
 
13.    ואת־אלה  תשקצו 
מן־העוף  לא  יאכלו
שקץ  הם  את־הנשר
ואת־הפרס  ואת
העזניה׃
    And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,     "'These you shall detest among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the vulture, and the black vulture,     And among birds these are to be disgusting to you, and not to be used for food: the eagle and the gier-eagle and the ospray;
 
14.    ואת־הדאה  ואת־האיה 
למינה׃
    And the vulture, and the kite after his kind;     and the red kite, any kind of black kite,     And the kite and the falcon, and birds of that sort;
 
15.    את  כל־ערב  למינו׃      Every raven after his kind;     any kind of raven,     Every raven, and birds of that sort;
 
16.    ואת  בת  היענה 
ואת־התחמס
ואת־השחף  ואת־הנץ
למינהו׃
    And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind,     the horned owl, the screech owl, and the gull, any kind of hawk,     And the ostrich and the night-hawk and the sea-hawk, and birds of that sort;
 
17.    ואת־הכוס  ואת־השלך 
ואת־הינשוף׃
    And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,     the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl,     And the little owl and the cormorant and the great owl;
 
18.    ואת־התנשמת 
ואת־הקאת
ואת־הרחם׃
    And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle,     the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey,     And the water-hen and the pelican and the vulture;
 
19.    ואת  החסידה  האנפה 
למינה  ואת־הדוכיפת
ואת־העטלף׃
    And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.     the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.     The stork and the heron, and birds of that sort, and the hoopoe and the bat.
 
20.    כל  שרץ  העוף  ההלך 
על־ארבע  שקץ  הוא
לכם׃
    All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you.     "'All flying insects that walk on all fours are an abomination to you.     Every winged four-footed thing which goes on the earth is disgusting to you;
 
21.    אך  את־זה  תאכלו 
מכל  שרץ  העוף  ההלך
על־ארבע  אשר־לא
כרעים  ממעל  לרגליו
לנתר  בהן  על־הארץ׃
    Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth;     Yet you may eat these: of all winged creeping things that go on all fours, which have legs above their feet, with which to hop on the earth.     But of the winged four-footed things, those which have long legs for jumping on the earth you may have for food;
 
22.    את־אלה  מהם  תאכלו 
את־הארבה  למינו
ואת־הסלעם  למינהו
ואת־החרגל  למינהו
ואת־החגב  למינהו׃
    Even these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind.     Even of these you may eat: any kind of locust, any kind of katydid, any kind of cricket, and any kind of grasshopper.     Such as all the different sorts of locust.
 
23.    וכל  שרץ  העוף 
אשר־לו  ארבע  רגלים
שקץ  הוא  לכם׃
    But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you.     But all winged creeping things which have four feet, are an abomination to you.     But all other winged four-footed things which go on the earth are disgusting to you.
 
24.    ולאלה  תטמאו 
כל־הנגע  בנבלתם
יטמא  עד־הערב׃
    And for these ye shall be unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even.     "'By these you will become unclean: whoever touches the carcass of them shall be unclean until the evening.     By these you will be made unclean; anyone touching their dead bodies will be unclean till evening:
 
25.    וכל־הנשא  מנבלתם 
יכבס  בגדיו  וטמא
עד־הערב׃
    And whosoever beareth ought of the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.     Whoever carries any part of their carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening.     Whoever takes away the dead body of one of them is to have his clothing washed, and will be unclean till evening.
 
26.    לכל־הבהמה  אשר  הוא 
מפרסת  פרסה  ושסע
איננה  שסעת  וגרה
איננה  מעלה  טמאים
הם  לכם  כל־הנגע
בהם  יטמא׃
    The carcases of every beast which divideth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, are unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean.     "'Every animal which parts the hoof, and is not cloven-footed, nor chews the cud, is unclean to you. Everyone who touches them shall be unclean.     Every beast, in the horn of whose foot there is not a complete division, and whose food does not come back, is unclean to you: anyone touching one of these will be unclean.
 
27.    וכל  הולך  על־כפיו 
בכל־החיה  ההלכת
על־ארבע  טמאים  הם
לכם  כל־הנגע
בנבלתם  יטמא
עד־הערב׃
    And whatsoever goeth upon his paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four, those are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even.     Whatever goes on its paws, among all animals that go on all fours, they are unclean to you. Whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening.     Any four-footed beast which goes on the ball of its foot, is unclean to you: anyone touching the dead body of one of these will be unclean till evening.
 
28.    והנשא  את־נבלתם 
יכבס  בגדיו  וטמא
עד־הערב  טמאים  המה
לכם׃
    And he that beareth the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you.     He who carries their carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening. They are unclean to you.     Anyone who takes away the dead body of one of these is to have his clothing washed and be unclean till evening.
 
29.    וזה  לכם  הטמא  בשרץ 
השרץ  על־הארץ  החלד
והעכבר  והצב
למינהו׃
    These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind,     "'These are they which are unclean to you among the creeping things that creep on the earth: the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard,     And these are unclean to you among things which go low down on the earth; the weasel and the mouse and the great lizard, and animals of that sort;
 
30.    והאנקה  והכח 
והלטאה  והחמט
והתנשמת׃
    And the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.     the gecko, and the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink, and the chameleon.     And the ferret and the land crocodile and the lizard and the sand-lizard and the chameleon.
 
31.    אלה  הטמאים  לכם 
בכל־השרץ  כל־הנגע
בהם  במתם  יטמא
עד־הערב׃
    These are unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they be dead, shall be unclean until the even.     These are they which are unclean to you among all that creep. Whoever touches them when they are dead, shall be unclean until the evening.     All these are unclean to you: anyone touching them when they are dead will be unclean till evening.
 
32.    וכל  אשר־יפל־עליו 
מהם  במתם  יטמא
מכל־כלי־עץ  או  בגד
או־עור  או  שק
כל־כלי  אשר־יעשה
מלאכה  בהם  במים
יובא  וטמא  עד־הערב
וטהר׃
    And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherein any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; so it shall be cleansed.     On whatever any of them falls when they are dead, it shall be unclean; whether it is any vessel of wood, or clothing, or skin, or sack, whatever vessel it is, with which any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the evening; then it will be clean.     The dead body of any of these, falling on anything, will make that thing unclean; if it is any vessel of wood, or clothing, or skin, or bag, whatever it is, if it is used for any purpose, it will have to be put into water, and will be unclean till evening; after that it will be clean.
 
33.    וכל־כלי־חרש 
אשר־יפל  מהם
אל־תוכו  כל  אשר
בתוכו  יטמא  ואתו
תשברו׃
    And every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean; and ye shall break it.     Every earthen vessel, into which any of them falls, all that is in it shall be unclean, and you shall break it.     And if one of them gets into any vessel of earth, whatever is in the vessel will be unclean and the vessel will have to be broken.
 
34.    מכל־האכל  אשר  יאכל 
אשר  יבוא  עליו  מים
יטמא  וכל־משקה  אשר
ישתה  בכל־כלי
יטמא׃
    Of all meat which may be eaten, that on which such water cometh shall be unclean: and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean.     All food which may be eaten, that on which water comes, shall be unclean; and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean.     Any food in it, and anything on which water from it comes, will be unclean: any drink taken from such a vessel will be unclean.
 
35.    וכל  אשר־יפל 
מנבלתם  עליו  יטמא
תנור  וכירים  יתץ
טמאים  הם  וטמאים
יהיו  לכם׃
    And every thing whereupon any part of their carcase falleth shall be unclean; whether it be oven, or ranges for pots, they shall be broken down: for they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you.     Everything whereupon part of their carcass falls shall be unclean; whether oven, or range for pots, it shall be broken in pieces: they are unclean, and shall be unclean to you.     Any part of the dead body of one of these, falling on anything, will make it unclean; if it is an oven or a cooking-pot it will have to be broken: they are unclean and will be unclean to you.
 
36.    אך  מעין  ובור 
מקוה־מים  יהיה
טהור  ונגע  בנבלתם
יטמא׃
    Nevertheless a fountain or pit, wherein there is plenty of water, shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcase shall be unclean.     Nevertheless a spring or a cistern in which water is a gathered shall be clean: but that which touches their carcass shall be unclean.     But at the same time a fountain or a place where water is stored for use will be clean; but anyone touching their dead bodies will be unclean.
 
37.    וכי  יפל  מנבלתם 
על־כל־זרע  זרוע
אשר  יזרע  טהור
הוא׃
    And if any part of their carcase fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean.     If part of their carcass falls on any sowing seed which is to be sown, it is clean.     If any part of the dead body of one of these gets on to any seed for planting, it is clean;
 
38.    וכי  יתן־מים 
על־זרע  ונפל
מנבלתם  עליו  טמא
הוא  לכם׃
    But if any water be put upon the seed, and any part of their carcase fall thereon, it shall be unclean unto you.     But if water is put on the seed, and part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.     But if water is put on the seed, and any part of the dead body gets on to it, it will be unclean to you.
 
39.    וכי  ימות  מן־הבהמה 
אשר־היא  לכם  לאכלה
הנגע  בנבלתה  יטמא
עד־  הערב׃
    And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die; he that toucheth the carcase thereof shall be unclean until the even.     "'If any animal, of which you may eat, dies; he who touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening.     And if any beast which may be used for food comes to a natural death, anyone touching its dead body will be unclean till evening.
 
40.    והאכל  מנבלתה  יכבס 
בגדיו  וטמא
עד־הערב  והנשא
את־נבלתה  יכבס
בגדיו  וטמא
עד־הערב׃
    And he that eateth of the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.     He who eats of its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening. He also who carries its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening.     And he who makes use of any part of its body for food is to have his clothing washed and be unclean till evening; and anyone taking away its body is to have his clothing washed and be unclean till evening.
 
41.    וכל־השרץ  השרץ 
על־הארץ  שקץ  הוא
לא  יאכל׃
    And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten.     "'Every creeping thing that creeps on the earth is an abomination. It shall not be eaten.     Everything which goes flat on its body on the earth is disgusting, and is not to be used for food.
 
42.    כל  הולך  על־גחון 
וכל  הולך  על־ארבע
עד  כל־מרבה  רגלים
לכל־השרץ  השרץ
על־הארץ  לא  תאכלום
כי־שקץ  הם׃
    Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination.     Whatever goes on its belly, and whatever goes on all fours, or whatever has many feet, even all creeping things that creep on the earth, them you shall not eat; for they are an abomination.     Whatever goes on its stomach or on four feet or has a great number of feet, even all those going flat on the earth, may not be used for food, for they are disgusting.
 
43.    אל־תשקצו 
את־נפשתיכם
בכל־השרץ  השרץ  ולא
תטמאו  בהם  ונטמתם
בם׃
    Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.     You shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creeps, neither shall you make yourselves unclean with them, that you should be defiled thereby.     You are not to make yourselves disgusting with anything which goes about flat on the earth; you may not make yourselves unclean with them, in such a way that you are not holy to me.
 
44.    כי  אני  יהוה 
אלהיכם  והתקדשתם
והייתם  קדשים  כי
קדוש  אני  ולא
תטמאו  את־נפשתיכם
בכל־השרץ  הרמש
על־הארץ׃
    For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.     For I am Yahweh your God. Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am holy: neither shall you defile yourselves with any kind of creeping thing that moves on the earth.     For I am the Lord your God: for this reason, make and keep yourselves holy, for I am holy; you are not to make yourselves unclean with any sort of thing which goes about flat on the earth.
 
45.    כי  אני  יהוה  המעלה 
אתכם  מארץ  מצרים
להית  לכם  לאלהים
והייתם  קדשים  כי
קדוש  אני׃
    For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.     For I am Yahweh who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.     For I am the Lord, who took you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; so be you holy, for I am holy.
 
46.    זאת  תורת  הבהמה 
והעוף  וכל  נפש
החיה  הרמשת  במים
ולכל־נפש  השרצת
על־הארץ׃
    This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth:     "'This is the law of the animal, and of the bird, and of every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every creature that creeps on the earth,     This is the law about beasts and birds and every living thing moving in the waters, and every living thing which goes flat on the earth:
 
47.    להבדיל  בין  הטמא 
ובין  הטהר  ובין
החיה  הנאכלת  ובין
החיה  אשר  לא  תאכל׃
    To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.     to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten.'"     Marking out the unclean from the clean, and the living thing which may be used for food from that which may not.
