1.    Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau was coming, and with him four hundred men. He divided the children between Leah, Rachel, and the two handmaids.     And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.     וישא  יעקב  עיניו 
וירא  והנה  עשו  בא

איש  ויחץ  את־

    VYSh'a Y'yQB 'yYNYV VYUr'a VHNH 'yShV B'a V'yMV 'aUrB'y M'aVTh 'aYSh VYChTSh 'aTh- HYLDYM 'yL-L'aH V'yL-UrChL V'yL ShThY HShPhChVTh.     And Jacob lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, Esau is coming, and with him four hundred men; and he divideth the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two maid-servants;     levans autem Iacob oculos suos vidit venientem Esau et cum eo quadringentos viros divisitque filios Liae et Rahel ambarumque famularum
 
2.    He put the handmaids and their children in front, Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph at the rear.     And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.     וישם  את־השפחות 
ואת־ילדיהן  ראשנה
ואת־לאה  וילדיה
אחרנים  ואת־רחל
ואת־יוסף  אחרנים׃
    VYShM 'aTh-HShPhChVTh V'aTh-YLDYHN Ur'aShNH V'aTh-L'aH VYLDYH 'aChUrNYM V'aTh-UrChL V'aTh-YVSPh 'aChUrNYM.     and he setteth the maid-servants and their children first, and Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last.     et posuit utramque ancillam et liberos earum in principio Liam vero et filios eius in secundo loco Rahel autem et Ioseph novissimos
 
3.    He himself passed over in front of them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.     And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.     והוא  עבר  לפניהם 
וישתחו  ארצה  שבע
פעמים  עד־גשתו
עד־אחיו׃
    VHV'a 'yBUr LPhNYHM VYShThChV 'aUrTShH ShB'y Ph'yMYM 'yD-GShThV 'yD-'aChYV.     And he himself passed over before them, and boweth himself to the earth seven times, until his drawing nigh unto his brother,     et ipse praegrediens adoravit pronus in terram septies donec adpropinquaret frater eius
 
4.    Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, fell on his neck, kissed him, and they wept.     And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.     וירץ  עשו  לקראתו 
ויחבקהו  ויפל
על־צוארו  וישקהו
ויבכו׃
    VYUrTSh 'yShV LQUr'aThV VYChBQHV VYPhL 'yL-TShV'aUrV VYShQHV VYBKV.     and Esau runneth to meet him, and embraceth him, and falleth on his neck, and kisseth him, and they weep;     currens itaque Esau obviam fratri suo amplexatus est eum stringensque collum et osculans flevit
 
5.    He lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, "Who are these with you?" He said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant."     And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.     וישא  את־עיניו 
וירא  את־הנשים
ואת־הילדים  ויאמר
מי־אלה  לך  ויאמר
הילדים  אשר־חנן
אלהים  את־עבדך׃
    VYSh'a 'aTh-'yYNYV VYUr'a 'aTh-HNShYM V'aTh-HYLDYM VY'aMUr MY-'aLH LK VY'aMUr HYLDYM 'aShUr-ChNN 'aLHYM 'aTh-'yBDK.     and he lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the women and the children, and saith, `What are these to thee?` And he saith, `The children with whom God hath favoured thy servant.`     levatisque oculis vidit mulieres et parvulos earum et ait quid sibi volunt isti et si ad te pertinent respondit parvuli sunt quos donavit mihi Deus servo tuo
 
6.    Then the handmaids came near with their children, and they bowed themselves.     Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.     ותגשן  השפחות  הנה 
וילדיהן  ותשתחוין׃
    VThGShN HShPhChVTh HNH VYLDYHN VThShThChVYN.     And the maid-servants draw nigh, they and their children, and bow themselves;     et adpropinquantes ancillae et filii earum incurvati sunt
 
7.    Leah also and her children came near, and bowed themselves. After them, Joseph came near with Rachel, and they bowed themselves.     And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.     ותגש  גם־לאה 
וילדיה  וישתחוו
ואחר  נגש  יוסף
ורחל  וישתחוו׃
    VThGSh GM-L'aH VYLDYH VYShThChVV V'aChUr NGSh YVSPh VUrChL VYShThChVV.     and Leah also draweth nigh, and her children, and they bow themselves; and afterwards Joseph hath drawn nigh with Rachel, and they bow themselves.     accessitque Lia cum liberis suis et cum similiter adorassent extremi Ioseph et Rahel adoraverunt
 
8.    Esau said, "What do you mean by all this company which I met?" Jacob said, "To find favor in the sight of my lord."     And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.     ויאמר  מי  לך 
כל־המחנה  הזה  אשר
פגשתי  ויאמר
למצא־חן  בעיני
אדני׃
    VY'aMUr MY LK KL-HMChNH HZH 'aShUr PhGShThY VY'aMUr LMTSh'a-ChN B'yYNY 'aDNY.     And he saith, `What to thee is all this camp which I have met?` and he saith, `To find grace in the eyes of my lord.`     quaenam sunt inquit istae turmae quas obvias habui respondit ut invenirem gratiam coram domino meo
 
9.    Esau said, "I have enough, my brother; let that which you have be yours."     And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.     ויאמר  עשו  יש־לי 
רב  אחי  יהי  לך
אשר־לך׃
    VY'aMUr 'yShV YSh-LY UrB 'aChY YHY LK 'aShUr-LK.     And Esau saith, `I have abundance, my brother, let it be to thyself that which thou hast.`     et ille habeo ait plurima frater mi sint tua tibi
 
10.    Jacob said, "Please, no, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present at my hand, because I have seen your face, as one sees the face of God, and you were pleased with me.     And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.     ויאמר  יעקב  אל־נא 
אם־נא  מצאתי  חן
בעיניך  ולקחת
מנחתי  מידי  כי
על־כן  ראיתי  פניך
כראת  פני  אלהים
ותרצני׃
    VY'aMUr Y'yQB 'aL-N'a 'aM-N'a MTSh'aThY ChN B'yYNYK VLQChTh MNChThY MYDY KY 'yL-KN Ur'aYThY PhNYK KUr'aTh PhNY 'aLHYM VThUrTShNY.     And Jacob saith, `Nay, I pray thee, if, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes, then thou hast received my present from my hand, because that I have seen thy face, as the seeing of the face of God, and thou art pleased with me;     dixit Iacob noli ita obsecro sed si inveni gratiam in oculis tuis accipe munusculum de manibus meis sic enim vidi faciem tuam quasi viderim vultum Dei esto mihi propitius
 
11.    Please take the gift that I brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough." He urged him, and he took it.     Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.     קח־נא  את־ברכתי 
אשר  הבאת  לך
כי־חנני  אלהים  וכי
יש־לי־כל  ויפצר־
בו  ויקח׃
    QCh-N'a 'aTh-BUrKThY 'aShUr HB'aTh LK KY-ChNNY 'aLHYM VKY YSh-LY-KL VYPhTShUr- BV VYQCh.     receive, I pray thee, my blessing, which is brought to thee, because God hath favoured me, and because I have all things;` and he presseth on him, and he receiveth,     et suscipe benedictionem quam adtuli tibi et quam donavit mihi Deus tribuens omnia vix fratre conpellente suscipiens
 
12.    Esau said, "Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before you."     And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.     ויאמר  נסעה  ונלכה 
ואלכה  לנגדך׃
    VY'aMUr NS'yH VNLKH V'aLKH LNGDK.     and saith, `Let us journey and go on, and I go on before thee.`     ait gradiamur simul eroque socius itineris tui
 
13.    Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are tender, and that the flocks and herds with me have their young, and if they overdrive them one day, all the flocks will die.     And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.     ויאמר  אליו  אדני 
ידע  כי־הילדים
רכים  והצאן  והבקר
עלות  עלי  ודפקום
יום  אחד  ומתו
כל־הצאן׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYV 'aDNY YD'y KY-HYLDYM UrKYM VHTSh'aN VHBQUr 'yLVTh 'yLY VDPhQVM YVM 'aChD VMThV KL-HTSh'aN.     And he saith unto him, `My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the suckling flock and the herd are with me; when they have beaten them one day, then hath all the flock died.     dixit Iacob nosti domine mi quod parvulos habeam teneros et oves ac boves fetas mecum quas si plus in ambulando fecero laborare morientur una die cuncti greges
 
14.    Please let my lord pass over before his servant, and I will lead on gently, according to the pace of the livestock that are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord to Seir."     Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.     יעבר־נא  אדני  לפני 
עבדו  ואני  אתנהלה
לאטי  לרגל  המלאכה
אשר־לפני  ולרגל
הילדים  עד  אשר־אבא
אל־אדני  שעירה׃
    Y'yBUr-N'a 'aDNY LPhNY 'yBDV V'aNY 'aThNHLH L'aTY LUrGL HML'aKH 'aShUr-LPhNY VLUrGL HYLDYM 'yD 'aShUr-'aB'a 'aL-'aDNY Sh'yYUrH.     Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant, and I -- I lead on gently, according to the foot of the work which is before me, and to the foot of the children, until that I come unto my lord, to Seir.`     praecedat dominus meus ante servum suum et ego sequar paulatim vestigia eius sicut videro posse parvulos meos donec veniam ad dominum meum in Seir
 
15.    Esau said, "Let me now leave with you some of the folk who are with me." He said, "Why? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord."     And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord.     ויאמר  עשו 
אציגה־נא  עמך
מן־העם  אשר  אתי
ויאמר  למה  זה
אמצא־חן  בעיני
אדני׃
    VY'aMUr 'yShV 'aTShYGH-N'a 'yMK MN-H'yM 'aShUr 'aThY VY'aMUr LMH ZH 'aMTSh'a-ChN B'yYNY 'aDNY.     And Esau saith, `Let me, I pray thee, place with thee some of the people who are with me;` and he said, `Why is this? I find grace in the eyes of my lord.`     respondit Esau oro te ut de populo qui mecum est saltem socii remaneant viae tuae non est inquit necesse hoc uno indigeo ut inveniam gratiam in conspectu domini mei
 
16.    So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.     So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.     וישב  ביום  ההוא 
עשו  לדרכו  שעירה׃
    VYShB BYVM HHV'a 'yShV LDUrKV Sh'yYUrH.     And turn back on that day doth Esau on his way to Seir;     reversus est itaque illo die Esau itinere quo venerat in Seir
 
17.    Jacob traveled to Succoth, built himself a house, and made shelters for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.{succoth means shelters or booths.}     And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.     ויעקב  נסע  סכתה 
ויבן  לו  בית
ולמקנהו  עשה  סכת
על־כן  קרא  שם־
המקום  סכות׃
    VY'yQB NS'y SKThH VYBN LV BYTh VLMQNHV 'yShH SKTh 'yL-KN QUr'a ShM- HMQVM SKVTh.     and Jacob hath journeyed to Succoth, and buildeth to himself a house, and for his cattle hath made booths, therefore hath he called the name of the place Succoth.     et Iacob venit in Soccoth ubi aedificata domo et fixis tentoriis appellavit nomen loci illius Soccoth id est Tabernacula
 
18.    Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan Aram; and encamped before the city.     And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city.     ויבא  יעקב  שלם  עיר 
שכם  אשר  בארץ  כנען
בבאו  מפדן  ארם
ויחן  את־  פני
העיר׃
    VYB'a Y'yQB ShLM 'yYUr ShKM 'aShUr B'aUrTSh KN'yN BB'aV MPhDN 'aUrM VYChN 'aTh- PhNY H'yYUr.     And Jacob cometh in to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, in his coming from Padan-Aram, and encampeth before the city,     transivitque in Salem urbem Sycimorum quae est in terra Chanaan postquam regressus est de Mesopotamiam Syriae et habitavit iuxta oppidum
 
19.    He bought the parcel of ground where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for one hundred pieces of money.     And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money.     ויקן  את־חלקת  השדה 
אשר  נטה־שם  אהלו
מיד  בני־חמור  אבי
שכם  במאה  קשיטה׃
    VYQN 'aTh-ChLQTh HShDH 'aShUr NTH-ShM 'aHLV MYD BNY-ChMVUr 'aBY ShKM BM'aH QShYTH.     and he buyeth the portion of the field where he hath stretched out his tent, from the hand of the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred kesitah;     emitque partem agri in qua fixerat tabernaculum a filiis Emor patris Sychem centum agnis
 
20.    He erected an altar there, and called it El Elohe Israel.{El Elohe Israel means "God, the God of Israel" or "The God of Israel is mighty."}     And he erected there an altar, and called it EleloheIsrael.     ויצב־שם  מזבח 
ויקרא־לו  אל  אלהי
ישראל׃
    VYTShB-ShM MZBCh VYQUr'a-LV 'aL 'aLHY YShUr'aL.     and he setteth up there an altar, and proclaimeth at it God -- the God of Israel.     et erecto ibi altari invocavit super illud Fortissimum Deum Israhel
