1.    Jacob lived in the land of his father's travels, in the land of Canaan.     And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.     וישב  יעקב  בארץ

2.    This is the history of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. Joseph brought an evil report of them to their father.     These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.     אלה  תלדות  יעקב

    'aLH ThLDVTh Y'yQB YVSPh BN-ShB'y-'yShUrH ShNH HYH Ur'yH 'aTh-'aChYV BTSh'aN VHV'a N'yUr 'aTh-BNY BLHH V'aTh-BNY ZLPhH NShY 'aBYV VYB'a YVSPh 'aTh-DBThM Ur'yH 'aL- 'aBYHM.     These are births of Jacob: Joseph, a son of seventeen years, hath been enjoying himself with his brethren among the flock, (and he is a youth,) with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father`s wives, and Joseph bringeth in an account of their evil unto their father.     et hae sunt generationes eius Ioseph cum sedecim esset annorum pascebat gregem cum fratribus suis adhuc puer et erat cum filiis Balae et Zelphae uxorum patris sui accusavitque fratres suos apud patrem crimine pessimo

    VYShUr'aL 'aHB 'aTh-YVSPh MKL-BNYV KY-BN-ZQNYM HV'a LV V'yShH LV KThNTh PhSYM.     And Israel hath loved Joseph more than any of his sons, for he is a son of his old age, and hath made for him a long coat;     Israhel autem diligebat Ioseph super omnes filios suos eo quod in senectute genuisset eum fecitque ei tunicam polymitam
 
4.    His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and couldn't speak peaceably to him.     And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.     ויראו  אחיו  כי־אתו 
אהב  אביהם
מכל־אחיו  וישנאו
אתו  ולא  יכלו  דברו
לשלם׃
    VYUr'aV 'aChYV KY-'aThV 'aHB 'aBYHM MKL-'aChYV VYShN'aV 'aThV VL'a YKLV DBUrV LShLM.     and his brethren see that their father hath loved him more than any of his brethren, and they hate him, and have not been able to speak to him peaceably.     videntes autem fratres eius quod a patre plus cunctis filiis amaretur oderant eum nec poterant ei quicquam pacificum loqui
 
5.    Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more.     And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.     ויחלם  יוסף  חלום 
ויגד  לאחיו  ויוספו
עוד  שנא  אתו׃
    VYChLM YVSPh ChLVM VYGD L'aChYV VYVSPhV 'yVD ShN'a 'aThV.     And Joseph dreameth a dream, and declareth to his brethren, and they add still more to hate him.     accidit quoque ut visum somnium referret fratribus quae causa maioris odii seminarium fuit
 
6.    He said to them, "Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:     And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:     ויאמר  אליהם 
שמעו־נא  החלום  הזה
אשר  חלמתי׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYHM ShM'yV-N'a HChLVM HZH 'aShUr ChLMThY.     And he saith unto them, `Hear ye, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:     dixitque ad eos audite somnium meum quod vidi
 
7.    for behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf."     For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.     והנה  אנחנו  מאלמים 
אלמים  בתוך  השדה
והנה  קמה  אלמתי
וגם־נצבה  והנה
תסבינה  אלמתיכם
ותשתחוין  לאלמתי׃
    VHNH 'aNChNV M'aLMYM 'aLMYM BThVK HShDH VHNH QMH 'aLMThY VGM-NTShBH VHNH ThSBYNH 'aLMThYKM VThShThChVYN L'aLMThY.     that, lo, we are binding bundles in the midst of the field, and lo, my bundle hath arisen, and hath also stood up, and lo, your bundles are round about, and bow themselves to my bundle.`     putabam ligare nos manipulos in agro et quasi consurgere manipulum meum et stare vestrosque manipulos circumstantes adorare manipulum meum
 
8.    His brothers said to him, "Will you indeed reign over us? Or will you indeed have dominion over us?" They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words.     And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.     ויאמרו  לו  אחיו 
המלך  תמלך  עלינו
אם־משול  תמשל  בנו
ויוספו  עוד  שנא
אתו  על־חלמתיו
ועל־דבריו׃
    VY'aMUrV LV 'aChYV HMLK ThMLK 'yLYNV 'aM-MShVL ThMShL BNV VYVSPhV 'yVD ShN'a 'aThV 'yL-ChLMThYV V'yL-DBUrYV.     And his brethren say to him, `Dost thou certainly reign over us? dost thou certainly rule over us?` and they add still more to hate him, for his dreams, and for his words.     responderunt fratres eius numquid rex noster eris aut subiciemur dicioni tuae haec ergo causa somniorum atque sermonum invidiae et odii fomitem ministravit
 
9.    He dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, "Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me."     And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.     ויחלם  עוד  חלום

10.    He told it to his father and to his brothers. His father rebuked him, and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves down to you to the earth?"     And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?     ויספר  אל־אביו 
ואל־אחיו  ויגער־בו
אביו  ויאמר  לו  מה
החלום  הזה  אשר
חלמת  הבוא  נבוא
אני  ואמך  ואחיך
להשתחות  לך  ארצה׃
    VYSPhUr 'aL-'aBYV V'aL-'aChYV VYG'yUr-BV 'aBYV VY'aMUr LV MH HChLVM HZH 'aShUr ChLMTh HBV'a NBV'a 'aNY V'aMK V'aChYK LHShThChVTh LK 'aUrTShH.     And he recounteth unto his father, and unto his brethren; and his father pusheth against him, and saith to him, `What is this dream which thou hast dreamt? do we certainly come -- I, and thy mother, and thy brethren -- to bow ourselves to thee, to the earth?`     quod cum patri suo et fratribus rettulisset increpavit eum pater et dixit quid sibi vult hoc somnium quod vidisti num ego et mater tua et fratres adorabimus te super terram
 
11.    His brothers envied him, but his father kept this saying in mind.     And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.     ויקנאו־בו  אחיו 
ואביו  שמר
את־הדבר׃
    VYQN'aV-BV 'aChYV V'aBYV ShMUr 'aTh-HDBUr.     and his brethren are zealous against him, and his father hath watched the matter.     invidebant igitur ei fratres sui pater vero rem tacitus considerabat
 
12.    His brothers went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.     And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.     וילכו  אחיו  לרעות 
את־צאן  אביהם
בשכם׃
    VYLKV 'aChYV LUr'yVTh 'aTh-TSh'aN 'aBYHM BShKM.     And his brethren go to feed the flock of their father in Shechem,     cumque fratres illius in pascendis gregibus patris morarentur in Sychem
 
13.    Israel said to Joseph, "Aren't your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them." He said to him, "Here I am."     And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.     ויאמר  ישראל 
אל־יוסף  הלוא  אחיך
רעים  בשכם  לכה
ואשלחך  אליהם
ויאמר  לו  הנני׃
    VY'aMUr YShUr'aL 'aL-YVSPh HLV'a 'aChYK Ur'yYM BShKM LKH V'aShLChK 'aLYHM VY'aMUr LV HNNY.     and Israel saith unto Joseph, `Are not thy brethren feeding in Shechem? come, and I send thee unto them;` and he saith to him, `Here am I;`     dixit ad eum Israhel fratres tui pascunt oves in Sycimis veni mittam te ad eos quo respondente
 
14.    He said to him, "Go now, see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flock; and bring me word again." So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.     And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.     ויאמר  לו  לך־נא 
ראה  את־שלום  אחיך
ואת־שלום  הצאן
והשבני  דבר
וישלחהו  מעמק
חברון  ויבא  שכמה׃
    VY'aMUr LV LK-N'a Ur'aH 'aTh-ShLVM 'aChYK V'aTh-ShLVM HTSh'aN VHShBNY DBUr VYShLChHV M'yMQ ChBUrVN VYB'a ShKMH.     and he saith to him, `Go, I pray thee, see the peace of thy brethren, and the peace of the flock, and bring me back word;` and he sendeth him from the valley of Hebron, and he cometh to Shechem.     praesto sum ait vade et vide si cuncta prospera sint erga fratres tuos et pecora et renuntia mihi quid agatur missus de valle Hebron venit in Sychem
 
15.    A certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field. The man asked him, "What are you looking for?"     And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?     וימצאהו  איש  והנה 
תעה  בשדה  וישאלהו
האיש  לאמר
מה־תבקש׃
    VYMTSh'aHV 'aYSh VHNH Th'yH BShDH VYSh'aLHV H'aYSh L'aMUr MH-ThBQSh.     And a man findeth him, and lo, he is wandering in the field, and the man asketh him, saying, `What seekest thou?`     invenitque eum vir errantem in agro et interrogavit quid quaereret
 
16.    He said, "I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, please, where they are feeding the flock."     And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.     ויאמר  את־אחי  אנכי 
מבקש  הגידה־נא  לי
איפה  הם  רעים׃
    VY'aMUr 'aTh-'aChY 'aNKY MBQSh HGYDH-N'a LY 'aYPhH HM Ur'yYM.     and he saith, `My brethren I am seeking, declare to me, I pray thee, where they are feeding?`     at ille respondit fratres meos quaero indica mihi ubi pascant greges
 
17.    The man said, "They have left here, for I heard them say, 'Let us go to Dothan.'" Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.     And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.     ויאמר  האיש  נסעו 
מזה  כי  שמעתי
אמרים  נלכה  דתינה
וילך  יוסף  אחר
אחיו  וימצאם  בדתן׃
    VY'aMUr H'aYSh NS'yV MZH KY ShM'yThY 'aMUrYM NLKH DThYNH VYLK YVSPh 'aChUr 'aChYV VYMTSh'aM BDThN.     And the man saith, `They have journeyed from this, for I have heard some saying, Let us go to Dothan,` and Joseph goeth after his brethren, and findeth them in Dothan.     dixitque ei vir recesserunt de loco isto audivi autem eos dicentes eamus in Dothain perrexit ergo Ioseph post fratres suos et invenit eos in Dothain
 
18.    They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.     And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.     ויראו  אתו  מרחק 
ובטרם  יקרב  אליהם
ויתנכלו  אתו
להמיתו׃
    VYUr'aV 'aThV MUrChQ VBTUrM YQUrB 'aLYHM VYThNKLV 'aThV LHMYThV.     And they see him from afar, even before he draweth near unto them, and they conspire against him to put him to death.     qui cum vidissent eum procul antequam accederet ad eos cogitaverunt illum occidere
 
19.    They said one to another, "Behold, this dreamer comes.     And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.     ויאמרו  איש 
אל־אחיו  הנה  בעל
החלמות  הלזה  בא׃
    VY'aMUrV 'aYSh 'aL-'aChYV HNH B'yL HChLMVTh HLZH B'a.     And they say one unto another, `Lo, this man of the dreams cometh;     et mutuo loquebantur ecce somniator venit
 
20.    Come now therefore, and let's kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, 'An evil animal has devoured him.' We will see what will become of his dreams."     Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.     ועתה  לכו  ונהרגהו 
ונשלכהו  באחד
הברות  ואמרנו  חיה
רעה  אכלתהו  ונראה
מה־יהיו  חלמתיו׃
    V'yThH LKV VNHUrGHV VNShLKHV B'aChD HBUrVTh V'aMUrNV ChYH Ur'yH 'aKLThHV VNUr'aH MH-YHYV ChLMThYV.     and now, come, and we slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and have said, An evil beast hath devoured him; and we see what his dreams are.`     venite occidamus eum et mittamus in cisternam veterem dicemusque fera pessima devoravit eum et tunc apparebit quid illi prosint somnia sua
 
21.    Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, "Let's not take his life."     And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.     וישמע  ראובן 
ויצלהו  מידם  ויאמר
לא  נכנו  נפש׃
    VYShM'y Ur'aVBN VYTShLHV MYDM VY'aMUr L'a NKNV NPhSh.     And Reuben heareth, and delivereth him out of their hand, and saith, `Let us not smite the life;`     audiens hoc Ruben nitebatur liberare eum de manibus eorum et dicebat
 
22.    Reuben said to them, "Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him"--that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.     And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.     ויאמר  אלהם  ראובן 
אל־תשפכו־דם
השליכו  אתו
אל־הבור  הזה  אשר
במדבר  ויד
אל־תשלחו־בו  למען
הציל  אתו  מידם
להשיבו  אל־אביו׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLHM Ur'aVBN 'aL-ThShPhKV-DM HShLYKV 'aThV 'aL-HBVUr HZH 'aShUr BMDBUr VYD 'aL-ThShLChV-BV LM'yN HTShYL 'aThV MYDM LHShYBV 'aL-'aBYV.     and Reuben saith unto them, `Shed no blood; cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and put not forth a hand upon him,` -- in order to deliver him out of their hand, to bring him back unto his father.     non interficiamus animam eius nec effundatis sanguinem sed proicite eum in cisternam hanc quae est in solitudine manusque vestras servate innoxias hoc autem dicebat volens eripere eum de manibus eorum et reddere patri suo
 
23.    It happened, when Joseph came to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colors that was on him;     And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;     ויהי  כאשר־בא  יוסף 
אל־אחיו  ויפשיטו
את־יוסף  את־כתנתו
את־כתנת  הפסים  אשר
עליו׃
    VYHY K'aShUr-B'a YVSPh 'aL-'aChYV VYPhShYTV 'aTh-YVSPh 'aTh-KThNThV 'aTh-KThNTh HPhSYM 'aShUr 'yLYV.     And it cometh to pass, when Joseph hath come unto his brethren, that they strip Joseph of his coat, the long coat which is upon him,     confestim igitur ut pervenit ad fratres nudaverunt eum tunica talari et polymita
 
24.    and they took him, and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty. There was no water in it.     And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.     ויקחהו  וישלכו  אתו 
הברה  והבור  רק  אין
בו  מים׃
    VYQChHV VYShLKV 'aThV HBUrH VHBVUr UrQ 'aYN BV MYM.     and take him and cast him into the pit, and the pit is empty, there is no water in it.     miseruntque in cisternam quae non habebat aquam
 
25.    They sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.     And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.     וישבו  לאכל־לחם 
וישאו  עיניהם
ויראו  והנה  ארחת
ישמעאלים  באה
מגלעד  וגמליהם
נשאים  נכאת  וצרי
ולט  הולכים  להוריד
מצרימה׃

26.    Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?     And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?     ויאמר  יהודה 
אל־אחיו  מה־בצע  כי
נהרג  את־אחינו
וכסינו  את־דמו׃
    VY'aMUr YHVDH 'aL-'aChYV MH-BTSh'y KY NHUrG 'aTh-'aChYNV VKSYNV 'aTh-DMV.     And Judah saith unto his brethren, `What gain when we slay our brother, and have concealed his blood?     dixit ergo Iudas fratribus suis quid nobis prodest si occiderimus fratrem nostrum et celaverimus sanguinem ipsius
 
27.    Come, and let's sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh." His brothers listened to him.     Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.     לכו  ונמכרנו 
לישמעאלים  וידנו
אל־תהי־בו
כי־אחינו  בשרנו
הוא  וישמעו  אחיו׃
    LKV VNMKUrNV LYShM'y'aLYM VYDNV 'aL-ThHY-BV KY-'aChYNV BShUrNV HV'a VYShM'yV 'aChYV.     Come, and we sell him to the Ishmaelites, and our hands are not on him, for he is our brother -- our flesh;` and his brethren hearken.     melius est ut vendatur Ismahelitis et manus nostrae non polluantur frater enim et caro nostra est adquieverunt fratres sermonibus eius
 
28.    Midianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. They brought Joseph into Egypt.     Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.     ויעברו  אנשים 
מדינים  סחרים
וימשכו  ויעלו
את־יוסף  מן־הבור
וימכרו  את־יוסף
לישמעאלים  בעשרים
כסף  ויביאו
את־יוסף  מצרימה׃
    VY'yBUrV 'aNShYM MDYNYM SChUrYM VYMShKV VY'yLV 'aTh-YVSPh MN-HBVUr VYMKUrV 'aTh-YVSPh LYShM'y'aLYM B'yShUrYM KSPh VYBY'aV 'aTh-YVSPh MTShUrYMH.     And Midianite merchantmen pass by and they draw out and bring up Joseph out of the pit, and sell Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty silverlings, and they bring Joseph into Egypt.     et praetereuntibus Madianitis negotiatoribus extrahentes eum de cisterna vendiderunt Ismahelitis viginti argenteis qui duxerunt eum in Aegyptum
 
29.    Reuben returned to the pit; and saw that Joseph wasn't in the pit; and he tore his clothes.     And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.     וישב  ראובן 
אל־הבור  והנה

ויקרע  את־בגדיו׃
    VYShB Ur'aVBN 'aL-HBVUr VHNH 'aYN-YVSPh BBVUr VYQUr'y 'aTh-BGDYV.     And Reuben returneth unto the pit, and lo, Joseph is not in the pit, and he rendeth his garments,     reversusque Ruben ad cisternam non invenit puerum
 
30.    He returned to his brothers, and said, "The child is no more; and I, where will I go?"     And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?     וישב  אל־אחיו

ואני  אנה  אני־בא׃

31.    They took Joseph's coat, and killed a male goat, and dipped the coat in the blood.     And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;     ויקחו  את־כתנת

32.    They took the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, "We have found this. Examine it, now, whether it is your son's coat or not."     And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.     וישלחו  את־כתנת

33.    He recognized it, and said, "It is my son's coat. An evil animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces."     And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.     ויכירה  ויאמר  כתנת 
בני  חיה  רעה
אכלתהו  טרף  טרף
יוסף׃
    VYKYUrH VY'aMUr KThNTh BNY ChYH Ur'yH 'aKLThHV TUrPh TUrPh YVSPh.     And he discerneth it, and saith, `My son`s coat! an evil beast hath devoured him; torn -- torn is Joseph!`     quam cum agnovisset pater ait tunica filii mei est fera pessima comedit eum bestia devoravit Ioseph
 
34.    Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.     And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.     ויקרע  יעקב  שמלתיו

35.    All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. He said, "For I will go down to Sheol{Sheol is the place of the dead.} to my son mourning." His father wept for him.     And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.     ויקמו  כל־בניו 
וכל־בנתיו  לנחמו
וימאן  להתנחם
ויאמר  כי־ארד  אל־
בני  אבל  שאלה  ויבך
