1.    The man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, "I have gotten a man with Yahweh's help."     And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.     והאדם  ידע  את־חוה 
אשתו  ותהר  ותלד
את־קין  ותאמר
קניתי  איש  את־
יהוה׃
    VH'aDM YD'y 'aTh-ChVH 'aShThV VThHUr VThLD 'aTh-QYN VTh'aMUr QNYThY 'aYSh 'aTh- YHVH.     And the man knew Eve his wife, and she conceiveth and beareth Cain, and saith, `I have gotten a man by Jehovah;`     Adam vero cognovit Havam uxorem suam quae concepit et peperit Cain dicens possedi hominem per Dominum
 
2.    Again she gave birth, to Cain's brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.     And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.     ותסף  ללדת  את־אחיו 
את־הבל  ויהי־הבל
רעה  צאן  וקין  היה
עבד  אדמה׃
    VThSPh LLDTh 'aTh-'aChYV 'aTh-HBL VYHY-HBL Ur'yH TSh'aN VQYN HYH 'yBD 'aDMH.     and she addeth to bear his brother, even Abel. And Abel is feeding a flock, and Cain hath been servant of the ground.     rursusque peperit fratrem eius Abel fuit autem Abel pastor ovium et Cain agricola
 
3.    As time passed, it happened that Cain brought an offering to Yahweh from the fruit of the ground.     And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.     ויהי  מקץ  ימים 
ויבא  קין  מפרי
האדמה  מנחה  ליהוה׃
    VYHY MQTSh YMYM VYB'a QYN MPhUrY H'aDMH MNChH LYHVH.     And it cometh to pass at the end of days that Cain bringeth from the fruit of the ground a present to Jehovah;     factum est autem post multos dies ut offerret Cain de fructibus terrae munera Domino
 
4.    Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. Yahweh respected Abel and his offering,     And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:     והבל  הביא  גם־הוא 
מבכרות  צאנו
ומחלבהן  וישע  יהוה
אל־הבל  ואל־
מנחתו׃
    VHBL HBY'a GM-HV'a MBKUrVTh TSh'aNV VMChLBHN VYSh'y YHVH 'aL-HBL V'aL- MNChThV.     and Abel, he hath brought, he also, from the female firstlings of his flock, even from their fat ones; and Jehovah looketh unto Abel and unto his present,     Abel quoque obtulit de primogenitis gregis sui et de adipibus eorum et respexit Dominus ad Abel et ad munera eius
 
5.    but he didn't respect Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.     But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.     ואל־קין  ואל־מנחתו 
לא  שעה  ויחר  לקין
מאד  ויפלו  פניו׃
    V'aL-QYN V'aL-MNChThV L'a Sh'yH VYChUr LQYN M'aD VYPhLV PhNYV.     and unto Cain and unto his present He hath not looked; and it is very displeasing to Cain, and his countenance is fallen.     ad Cain vero et ad munera illius non respexit iratusque est Cain vehementer et concidit vultus eius
 
6.    Yahweh said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?     And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?     ויאמר  יהוה  אל־קין 
למה  חרה  לך  ולמה
נפלו  פניך׃
    VY'aMUr YHVH 'aL-QYN LMH ChUrH LK VLMH NPhLV PhNYK.     And Jehovah saith unto Cain, `Why hast thou displeasure? and why hath thy countenance fallen?     dixitque Dominus ad eum quare maestus es et cur concidit facies tua
 
7.    If you do well, will it not be lifted up? If you don't do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it."     If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.     הלוא  אם־תיטיב  שאת 
ואם  לא  תיטיב  לפתח
חטאת  רבץ  ואליך
תשוקתו  ואתה
תמשל־בו׃
    HLV'a 'aM-ThYTYB Sh'aTh V'aM L'a ThYTYB LPhThCh ChT'aTh UrBTSh V'aLYK ThShVQThV V'aThH ThMShL-BV.     Is there not, if thou dost well, acceptance? and if thou dost not well, at the opening a sin-offering is crouching, and unto thee its desire, and thou rulest over it.`     nonne si bene egeris recipies sin autem male statim in foribus peccatum aderit sed sub te erit appetitus eius et tu dominaberis illius
 
8.    Cain said to Abel, his brother, "Let's go into the field." It happened when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.     And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.     ויאמר  קין  אל־הבל 
אחיו  ויהי  בהיותם
בשדה  ויקם  קין
אל־הבל  אחיו
ויהרגהו׃
    VY'aMUr QYN 'aL-HBL 'aChYV VYHY BHYVThM BShDH VYQM QYN 'aL-HBL 'aChYV VYHUrGHV.     And Cain saith unto Abel his brother, `Let us go into the field;` and it cometh to pass in their being in the field, that Cain riseth up against Abel his brother, and slayeth him.     dixitque Cain ad Abel fratrem suum egrediamur foras cumque essent in agro consurrexit Cain adversus Abel fratrem suum et interfecit eum
 
9.    Yahweh said to Cain, "Where is Abel, your brother?" He said, "I don't know. Am I my brother's keeper?"     And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?     ויאמר  יהוה  אל־קין 
אי  הבל  אחיך  ויאמר
לא  ידעתי  השמר  אחי
אנכי׃
    VY'aMUr YHVH 'aL-QYN 'aY HBL 'aChYK VY'aMUr L'a YD'yThY HShMUr 'aChY 'aNKY.     And Jehovah saith unto Cain, `Where is Abel thy brother?` and he saith, `I have not known; my brother`s keeper -- I?`     et ait Dominus ad Cain ubi est Abel frater tuus qui respondit nescio num custos fratris mei sum
 
10.    Yahweh said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries to me from the ground.     And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.     ויאמר  מה  עשית  קול 
דמי  אחיך  צעקים
אלי  מן־האדמה׃
    VY'aMUr MH 'yShYTh QVL DMY 'aChYK TSh'yQYM 'aLY MN-H'aDMH.     And He saith, `What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother`s blood is crying unto Me from the ground;     dixitque ad eum quid fecisti vox sanguinis fratris tui clamat ad me de terra
 
11.    Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.     And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;     ועתה  ארור  אתה 
מן־האדמה  אשר  פצתה
את־פיה  לקחת
את־דמי  אחיך  מידך׃
    V'yThH 'aUrVUr 'aThH MN-H'aDMH 'aShUr PhTShThH 'aTh-PhYH LQChTh 'aTh-DMY 'aChYK MYDK.     and now, cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive the blood of thy brother from thy hand;     nunc igitur maledictus eris super terram quae aperuit os suum et suscepit sanguinem fratris tui de manu tua
 
12.    From now on, when you till the ground, it won't yield its strength to you. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth."     When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.     כי  תעבד  את־האדמה 
לא־תסף  תת־כחה  לך
נע  ונד  תהיה  בארץ׃
    KY Th'yBD 'aTh-H'aDMH L'a-ThSPh ThTh-KChH LK N'y VND ThHYH B'aUrTSh.     when thou tillest the ground, it doth not add to give its strength to thee -- a wanderer, even a trembling one, thou art in the earth.`     cum operatus fueris eam non dabit tibi fructus suos vagus et profugus eris super terram
 
13.    Cain said to Yahweh, "My punishment is greater than I can bear.     And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.     ויאמר  קין  אל־יהוה 
גדול  עוני  מנשוא׃
    VY'aMUr QYN 'aL-YHVH GDVL 'yVNY MNShV'a.     And Cain saith unto Jehovah, `Greater is my punishment than to be borne;     dixitque Cain ad Dominum maior est iniquitas mea quam ut veniam merear
 
14.    Behold, you have driven me out this day from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. It will happen that whoever finds me will kill me."     Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.     הן  גרשת  אתי  היום 
מעל  פני  האדמה
ומפניך  אסתר
והייתי  נע  ונד
בארץ  והיה  כל־מצאי
יהרגני׃
    HN GUrShTh 'aThY HYVM M'yL PhNY H'aDMH VMPhNYK 'aSThUr VHYYThY N'y VND B'aUrTSh VHYH KL-MTSh'aY YHUrGNY.     lo, Thou hast driven me to-day from off the face of the ground, and from Thy face I am hid; and I have been a wanderer, even a trembling one, in the earth, and it hath been -- every one finding me doth slay me.`     ecce eicis me hodie a facie terrae et a facie tua abscondar et ero vagus et profugus in terra omnis igitur qui invenerit me occidet me
 
15.    Yahweh said to him, "Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold." Yahweh appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should strike him.     And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.     ויאמר  לו  יהוה  לכן 
כל־הרג  קין  שבעתים
יקם  וישם  יהוה
לקין  אות  לבלתי
הכות־אתו  כל־מצאו׃
    VY'aMUr LV YHVH LKN KL-HUrG QYN ShB'yThYM YQM VYShM YHVH LQYN 'aVTh LBLThY HKVTh-'aThV KL-MTSh'aV.     And Jehovah saith to him, `Therefore -- of any slayer of Cain sevenfold it is required;` and Jehovah setteth to Cain a token that none finding him doth slay him.     dixitque ei Dominus nequaquam ita fiet sed omnis qui occiderit Cain septuplum punietur posuitque Dominus Cain signum ut non eum interficeret omnis qui invenisset eum
 
16.    Cain went out from Yahweh's presence, and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.     And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.     ויצא  קין  מלפני 
יהוה  וישב
בארץ־נוד
קדמת־עדן׃
    VYTSh'a QYN MLPhNY YHVH VYShB B'aUrTSh-NVD QDMTh-'yDN.     And Cain goeth out from before Jehovah, and dwelleth in the land, moving about east of Eden;     egressusque Cain a facie Domini habitavit in terra profugus ad orientalem plagam Eden
 
17.    Cain knew his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Enoch. He built a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.     And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.     וידע  קין  את־אשתו 
ותהר  ותלד  את־חנוך
ויהי  בנה  עיר
ויקרא  שם  העיר  כשם
בנו  חנוך׃
    VYD'y QYN 'aTh-'aShThV VThHUr VThLD 'aTh-ChNVK VYHY BNH 'yYUr VYQUr'a ShM H'yYUr KShM BNV ChNVK.     and Cain knoweth his wife, and she conceiveth, and beareth Enoch; and he is building a city, and he calleth the name of the city, according to the name of his son -- Enoch.     cognovit autem Cain uxorem suam quae concepit et peperit Enoch et aedificavit civitatem vocavitque nomen eius ex nomine filii sui Enoch
 
18.    To Enoch was born Irad. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.     And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.     ויולד  לחנוך 
את־עירד  ועירד  ילד
את־מחויאל  ומחייאל
ילד  את־  מתושאל
ומתושאל  ילד
את־למך׃
    VYVLD LChNVK 'aTh-'yYUrD V'yYUrD YLD 'aTh-MChVY'aL VMChYY'aL YLD 'aTh- MThVSh'aL VMThVSh'aL YLD 'aTh-LMK.     And born to Enoch is Irad; and Irad hath begotten Mehujael; and Mehujael hath begotten Methusael; and Methusael hath begotten Lamech.     porro Enoch genuit Irad et Irad genuit Maviahel et Maviahel genuit Matusahel et Matusahel genuit Lamech
 
19.    Lamech took two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.     And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.     ויקח־לו  למך  שתי 
נשים  שם  האחת  עדה
ושם  השנית  צלה׃
    VYQCh-LV LMK ShThY NShYM ShM H'aChTh 'yDH VShM HShNYTh TShLH.     And Lamech taketh to himself two wives, the name of the one Adah, and the name of the second Zillah.     qui accepit uxores duas nomen uni Ada et nomen alteri Sella
 
20.    Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.     And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.     ותלד  עדה  את־יבל 
הוא  היה  אבי  ישב
אהל  ומקנה׃
    VThLD 'yDH 'aTh-YBL HV'a HYH 'aBY YShB 'aHL VMQNH.     And Adah beareth Jabal, he hath been father of those inhabiting tents and purchased possessions;     genuitque Ada Iabel qui fuit pater habitantium in tentoriis atque pastorum
 
21.    His brother's name was Jubal, who was the father of all who handle the harp and pipe.     And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.     ושם  אחיו  יובל  הוא 
היה  אבי  כל־תפש
כנור  ועוגב׃
    VShM 'aChYV YVBL HV'a HYH 'aBY KL-ThPhSh KNVUr V'yVGB.     and the name of his brother is Jubal, he hath been father of every one handling harp and organ.     et nomen fratris eius Iubal ipse fuit pater canentium cithara et organo
 
22.    Zillah also gave birth to Tubal Cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron. Tubal Cain's sister was Naamah.     And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.     וצלה  גם־הוא  ילדה 
את־תובל  קין  לטש
כל־חרש  נחשת  וברזל
ואחות  תובל־קין
נעמה׃
    VTShLH GM-HV'a YLDH 'aTh-ThVBL QYN LTSh KL-ChUrSh NChShTh VBUrZL V'aChVTh ThVBL-QYN N'yMH.     And Zillah she also bare Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron; and a sister of Tubal-Cain is Naamah.     Sella quoque genuit Thubalcain qui fuit malleator et faber in cuncta opera aeris et ferri soror vero Thubalcain Noemma
 
23.    Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice. You wives of Lamech, listen to my speech, for I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.     And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.     ויאמר  למך  לנשיו 
עדה  וצלה  שמען
קולי  נשי  למך
האזנה  אמרתי  כי
איש  הרגתי  לפצעי
וילד  לחברתי׃
    VY'aMUr LMK LNShYV 'yDH VTShLH ShM'yN QVLY NShY LMK H'aZNH 'aMUrThY KY 'aYSh HUrGThY LPhTSh'yY VYLD LChBUrThY.     And Lamech saith to his wives: -- `Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, give ear to my saying: For a man I have slain for my wound, Even a young man for my hurt;     dixitque Lamech uxoribus suis Adae et Sellae audite vocem meam uxores Lamech auscultate sermonem meum quoniam occidi virum in vulnus meum et adulescentulum in livorem meum
 
24.    If Cain will be avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times."     If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.     כי  שבעתים  יקם־קין 
ולמך  שבעים  ושבעה׃
    KY ShB'yThYM YQM-QYN VLMK ShB'yYM VShB'yH.     For sevenfold is required for Cain, And for Lamech seventy and sevenfold.`     septuplum ultio dabitur de Cain de Lamech vero septuagies septies
 
25.    Adam knew his wife again. She gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, "for God has appointed me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him."     And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.     וידע  אדם  עוד 
את־אשתו  ותלד  בן
ותקרא  את־שמו  שת
כי  שת־לי  אלהים
זרע  אחר  תחת  הבל
כי  הרגו  קין׃
    VYD'y 'aDM 'yVD 'aTh-'aShThV VThLD BN VThQUr'a 'aTh-ShMV ShTh KY ShTh-LY 'aLHYM ZUr'y 'aChUr ThChTh HBL KY HUrGV QYN.     And Adam again knoweth his wife, and she beareth a son, and calleth his name Seth, `for God hath appointed for me another seed instead of Abel:` for Cain had slain him.     cognovit quoque adhuc Adam uxorem suam et peperit filium vocavitque nomen eius Seth dicens posuit mihi Deus semen aliud pro Abel quem occidit Cain
 
26.    There was also born a son to Seth, and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on Yahweh's name.     And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.     ולשת  גם־הוא 
ילד־בן  ויקרא
את־שמו  אנוש  אז
הוחל  לקרא  בשם
יהוה׃
    VLShTh GM-HV'a YLD-BN VYQUr'a 'aTh-ShMV 'aNVSh 'aZ HVChL LQUr'a BShM YHVH.     And to Seth, to him also a son hath been born, and he calleth his name Enos; then a beginning was made of preaching in the name of Jehovah.     sed et Seth natus est filius quem vocavit Enos iste coepit invocare nomen Domini
