1.    Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.     And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for to Shechem were all Israel come to make him king.     וילך  רחבעם  שכמה 
כי  שכם  באו
כל־ישראל  להמליך
אתו׃
    VYLK UrChB'yM ShKMH KY ShKM B'aV KL-YShUr'aL LHMLYK 'aThV.     And Rehoboam goeth to Shechem, for to Shechem have all Israel come to cause him to reign.     profectus est autem Roboam in Sychem illuc enim cunctus Israhel convenerat ut constituerent eum regem
 
2.    It happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it, (for he was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of king Solomon), that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.     And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.     ויהי  כשמע  ירבעם 
בן־נבט  והוא
במצרים  אשר  ברח
מפני  שלמה  המלך
וישב  ירבעם
ממצרים׃
    VYHY KShM'y YUrB'yM BN-NBT VHV'a BMTShUrYM 'aShUr BUrCh MPhNY ShLMH HMLK VYShB YUrB'yM MMTShUrYM.     And it cometh to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat`s -- who is in Egypt because he hath fled from the face of Solomon the king -- hearing, that Jeroboam turneth back out of Egypt;     quod cum audisset Hieroboam filius Nabath qui erat in Aegypto fugerat quippe illuc ante Salomonem statim reversus est
 
3.    They sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came, and they spoke to Rehoboam, saying,     And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying,     וישלחו  ויקראו־לו 
ויבא  ירבעם
וכל־ישראל  וידברו
אל־רחבעם  לאמר׃
    VYShLChV VYQUr'aV-LV VYB'a YUrB'yM VKL-YShUr'aL VYDBUrV 'aL-UrChB'yM L'aMUr.     and they send and call for him, and Jeroboam cometh in, and all Israel, and speak unto Rehoboam, saying,     vocaveruntque eum et venit cum universo Israhel et locuti sunt ad Roboam dicentes
 
4.    "Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you."     Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.     אביך  הקשה  את־עלנו 
ועתה  הקל  מעבדת
אביך  הקשה  ומעלו
הכבד  אשר־נתן
עלינו  ונעבדך׃
    'aBYK HQShH 'aTh-'yLNV V'yThH HQL M'yBDTh 'aBYK HQShH VM'yLV HKBD 'aShUr-NThN 'yLYNV VN'yBDK.     `Thy father made our yoke sharp, and now, make light somewhat of the sharp service of thy father, and of his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we serve thee.`     pater tuus durissimo iugo nos pressit tu leviora impera patre tuo qui nobis gravem inposuit servitutem et paululum de onere subleva ut serviamus tibi
 
5.    He said to them, "Come again to me after three days." The people departed.     And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.     ויאמר  אלהם  עוד 
שלשת  ימים  ושובו
אלי  וילך  העם׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLHM 'yVD ShLShTh YMYM VShVBV 'aLY VYLK H'yM.     And he saith unto them, `Yet three days -- then return ye unto me;` and the people go.     qui ait post tres dies revertimini ad me cumque abisset populus
 
6.    King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, "What counsel do you give me to return answer to this people?"     And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?     ויועץ  המלך  רחבעם 
את־הזקנים  אשר־היו
עמדים  לפני  שלמה
אביו  בהיתו  חי
לאמר  איך  אתם
נועצים  להשיב
לעם־הזה  דבר׃
    VYV'yTSh HMLK UrChB'yM 'aTh-HZQNYM 'aShUr-HYV 'yMDYM LPhNY ShLMH 'aBYV BHYThV ChY L'aMUr 'aYK 'aThM NV'yTShYM LHShYB L'yM-HZH DBUr.     And king Rehoboam consulteth with the aged men who have been standing before Solomon his father in his being alive, saying, `How are ye counselling to answer this people?`     iniit consilium cum senibus qui steterant coram patre eius Salomone dum adviveret dicens quid datis consilii ut respondeam populo
 
7.    They spoke to him, saying, "If you are kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever."     And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.     וידברו  אליו  לאמר 
אם־תהיה  לטוב  להעם
הזה  ורציתם  ודברת
אלהם  דברים  טובים
והיו  לך  עבדים
כל־הימים׃
    VYDBUrV 'aLYV L'aMUr 'aM-ThHYH LTVB LH'yM HZH VUrTShYThM VDBUrTh 'aLHM DBUrYM TVBYM VHYV LK 'yBDYM KL-HYMYM.     And they speak unto him, saying, `If thou dost become good to this people, and hast been pleased with them, and spoken unto them good words, then they have been to thee servants all the days.`     qui dixerunt ei si placueris populo huic et lenieris eos verbis clementibus servient tibi omni tempore
 
8.    But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.     But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.     ויעזב  את־עצת 
הזקנים  אשר  יעצהו
ויועץ  את־הילדים
אשר  גדלו  אתו
העמדים  לפניו׃
    VY'yZB 'aTh-'yTShTh HZQNYM 'aShUr Y'yTShHV VYV'yTSh 'aTh-HYLDYM 'aShUr GDLV 'aThV H'yMDYM LPhNYV.     And he forsaketh the counsel of the aged men that they counselled him, and consulteth with the lads who have grown up with him, those standing before him,     at ille reliquit consilium senum et cum iuvenibus tractare coepit qui cum eo nutriti fuerant et erant in comitatu illius
 
9.    He said to them, "What counsel do you give, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, 'Make the yoke that your father did put on us lighter?'"     And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?     ויאמר  אלהם  מה  אתם 
נועצים  ונשיב  דבר
את־העם  הזה  אשר
דברו  אלי  לאמר  הקל
מן־העל  אשר־נתן
אביך  עלינו׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLHM MH 'aThM NV'yTShYM VNShYB DBUr 'aTh-H'yM HZH 'aShUr DBUrV 'aLY L'aMUr HQL MN-H'yL 'aShUr-NThN 'aBYK 'yLYNV.     and he saith unto them, `What are ye counselling, and we answer this people that have spoken unto me, saying, Make light somewhat of the yoke that thy father put upon us?`     dixitque ad eos quid vobis videtur vel respondere quid debeo populo huic qui dixit mihi subleva iugum quod inposuit nobis pater tuus
 
10.    The young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, "Thus you shall tell the people who spoke to you, saying, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter on us;' thus you shall say to them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's waist.     And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.     וידברו  אתו  הילדים 
אשר  גדלו  אתו  לאמר
כה־תאמר  לעם
אשר־דברו  אליך
לאמר  אביך  הכביד
את־עלנו  ואתה  הקל
מעלינו  כה  תאמר
אלהם  קטני  עבה
ממתני  אבי׃
    VYDBUrV 'aThV HYLDYM 'aShUr GDLV 'aThV L'aMUr KH-Th'aMUr L'yM 'aShUr-DBUrV 'aLYK L'aMUr 'aBYK HKBYD 'aTh-'yLNV V'aThH HQL M'yLYNV KH Th'aMUr 'aLHM QTNY 'yBH MMThNY 'aBY.     And the lads who have grown up with him, speak with him, saying, `Thus dost thou say to the people who have spoken unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and thou, make light somewhat of our yoke; thus dost thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father;     at illi responderunt ut iuvenes et nutriti cum eo in deliciis atque dixerunt sic loqueris populo qui dixit tibi pater tuus adgravavit iugum nostrum tu subleva et sic respondebis eis minimus digitus meus grossior est lumbis patris mei
 
11.    Now whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I [will chastise you] with scorpions.'"     For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.     ועתה  אבי  העמיס 
עליכם  על  כבד  ואני
אסיף  על־עלכם  אבי
יסר  אתכם  בשוטים
ואני  בעקרבים׃
    V'yThH 'aBY H'yMYS 'yLYKM 'yL KBD V'aNY 'aSYPh 'yL-'yLKM 'aBY YSUr 'aThKM BShVTYM V'aNY B'yQUrBYM.     and now, my father laid on you a heavy yoke, and I -- I add unto your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.`     pater meus inposuit vobis iugum grave et ego maius pondus adponam pater meus cecidit vos flagellis ego vero caedam scorpionibus
 
12.    So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, "Come to me again the third day."     So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.     ויבא  ירבעם 
וכל־העם  אל־רחבעם
ביום  השלשי  כאשר
דבר  המלך  לאמר
שובו  אלי  ביום
השלשי׃
    VYB'a YUrB'yM VKL-H'yM 'aL-UrChB'yM BYVM HShLShY K'aShUr DBUr HMLK L'aMUr ShVBV 'aLY BYVM HShLShY.     And Jeroboam cometh in, and all the people, unto Rehoboam on the third day, as the king spake, saying, `Return unto me on the third day.`     venit ergo Hieroboam et universus populus ad Roboam die tertio sicut praeceperat eis
 
13.    The king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,     And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,     ויענם  המלך  קשה 
ויעזב  המלך  רחבעם
את  עצת  הזקנים׃
    VY'yNM HMLK QShH VY'yZB HMLK UrChB'yM 'aTh 'yTShTh HZQNYM.     And the king answereth them sharply, and king Rehoboam forsaketh the counsel of the aged men,     responditque rex dura derelicto consilio seniorum
 
14.    and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions."     And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.     וידבר  אלהם  כעצת 
הילדים  לאמר  אכביד
את־עלכם  ואני  אסיף
עליו  אבי  יסר  אתכם
בשוטים  ואני
בעקרבים׃
    VYDBUr 'aLHM K'yTShTh HYLDYM L'aMUr 'aKBYD 'aTh-'yLKM V'aNY 'aSYPh 'yLYV 'aBY YSUr 'aThKM BShVTYM V'aNY B'yQUrBYM.     and speaketh unto them according to the counsel of the lads, saying, `My father made your yoke heavy, and I -- I add unto it; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.`     locutusque est iuxta iuvenum voluntatem pater meus grave vobis inposuit iugum quod ego gravius faciam pater meus cecidit vos flagellis ego vero caedam scorpionibus
 
15.    So the king didn't listen to the people; for it was brought about of God, that Yahweh might establish his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.     So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.     ולא־שמע  המלך 
אל־העם  כי־היתה
נסבה  מעם  האלהים
למען  הקים  יהוה
את־דברו  אשר  דבר
ביד  אחיהו  השלוני
אל־ירבעם  בן־נבט׃
    VL'a-ShM'y HMLK 'aL-H'yM KY-HYThH NSBH M'yM H'aLHYM LM'yN HQYM YHVH 'aTh-DBUrV 'aShUr DBUr BYD 'aChYHV HShLVNY 'aL-YUrB'yM BN-NBT.     And the king hath not hearkened unto the people, for the revolution hath been from God, for the sake of Jehovah`s establishing His word that He spake by the hand of Abijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam son of Nebat.     et non adquievit populi precibus erat enim voluntatis Dei ut conpleretur sermo eius quem locutus fuerat per manum Ahiae Silonitis ad Hieroboam filium Nabath
 
16.    When all Israel saw that the king didn't listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, "What portion have we in David? Neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse! Every man to your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David." So all Israel departed to their tents.     And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.     וכל־ישראל  כי 
לא־שמע  המלך  להם
וישיבו  העם
את־המלך  לאמר
מה־לנו  חלק  בדויד
ולא־נחלה  בבן־ישי
איש  לאהליך  ישראל
עתה  ראה  ביתך  דויד
וילך  כל־ישראל
לאהליו׃
    VKL-YShUr'aL KY L'a-ShM'y HMLK LHM VYShYBV H'yM 'aTh-HMLK L'aMUr MH-LNV ChLQ BDVYD VL'a-NChLH BBN-YShY 'aYSh L'aHLYK YShUr'aL 'yThH Ur'aH BYThK DVYD VYLK KL-YShUr'aL L'aHLYV.     And all Israel have seen that the king hath not hearkened to them, and the people send back to the king, saying, `What portion have we in David? yea, there is no inheritance in a son of Jesse; each to thy tents, O Israel; now, see thy house -- David,` and all Israel go to their tents.     populus autem universus rege duriora dicente sic locutus est ad eum non est nobis pars in David neque hereditas in filio Isai revertere in tabernacula tua Israhel tu autem pasce domum tuam David et abiit Israhel in tabernacula sua
 
17.    But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.     But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.     ובני  ישראל  הישבים 
בערי  יהודה  וימלך
עליהם  רחבעם׃
    VBNY YShUr'aL HYShBYM B'yUrY YHVDH VYMLK 'yLYHM UrChB'yM.     As to the sons of Israel who are dwelling in the cities of Judah -- Rehoboam reigneth over them.     super filios autem Israhel qui habitabant in civitatibus Iuda regnavit Roboam
 
18.    Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and the children of Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam made speed to get himself up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.     Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died.     VYShLCh HMLK UrChB'yM 'aTh-HDUrM 'aShUr 'yL-HMS VYUrGMV-BV BNY-YShUr'aL 'aBN VYMTh VHMLK UrChB'yM HTh'aMTSh L'yLVTh BMUrKBH LNVS YUrVShLM.     And king Rehoboam sendeth Hadoram, who is over the tribute, and the sons of Israel cast at him stones, and he dieth; and king Rehoboam hath strengthened himself to go up into a chariot to flee to Jerusalem;     misitque rex Roboam Aduram qui praeerat tributis et lapidaverunt eum filii Israhel et mortuus est porro rex Roboam currum festinavit ascendere et fugit in Hierusalem
 
19.    So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.     And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.     ויפשעו  ישראל  בבית 
דויד  עד  היום  הזה׃
    VYPhSh'yV YShUr'aL BBYTh DVYD 'yD HYVM HZH.     and Israel transgress against the house of David unto this day.     recessitque Israhel a domo David usque ad diem hanc
