1.    Then the Pharisees, and some of the scribes gathered together to him, having come from Jerusalem.     Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.     και συναγονται προς αυτον οι φαρισαιοι και τινες των γραμματεων ελθοντες απο ιεροσολυμων     And gathered together unto him are the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, having come from Jerusalem,     et conveniunt ad eum Pharisaei et quidam de scribis venientes ab Hierosolymis
 
2.    Now when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is, unwashed, hands, they found fault.     And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.     και ιδοντες τινας των μαθητων αυτου οτι κοιναις χερσιν τουτ εστιν ανιπτοις εσθιουσιν τουσ αρτους     and having seen certain of his disciples with defiled hands -- that is, unwashed -- eating bread, they found fault;     et cum vidissent quosdam ex discipulis eius communibus manibus id est non lotis manducare panes vituperaverunt
 
3.    (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, don't eat unless they wash their hands and forearms, holding to the tradition of the elders.     For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.     οι γαρ φαρισαιοι και παντες οι ιουδαιοι εαν μη πυγμη νιψωνται τας χειρας ουκ εσθιουσιν κρατουντες την παραδοσιν των πρεσβυτερων     for the Pharisees, and all the Jews, if they do not wash the hands to the wrist, do not eat, holding the tradition of the elders,     Pharisaei enim et omnes Iudaei nisi crebro lavent manus non manducant tenentes traditionem seniorum
 
4.    They don't eat when they come from the marketplace, unless they bathe themselves, and there are many other things, which they have received to hold to: washings of cups, pitchers, bronze vessels, and couches.)     And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.     και απ αγορας εαν μη βαπτισωνται ουκ εσθιουσιν και αλλα πολλα εστιν α παρελαβον κρατειν βαπτισμους ποτηριων και ξεστων και χαλκιων [και κλινων]     and, coming from the market-place, if they do not baptize themselves, they do not eat; and many other things there are that they received to hold, baptisms of cups, and pots, and brazen vessels, and couches.     et a foro nisi baptizentur non comedunt et alia multa sunt quae tradita sunt illis servare baptismata calicum et urceorum et aeramentorum et lectorum
 
5.    The Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why don't your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?"     Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?     και επερωτωσιν αυτον οι φαρισαιοι και οι γραμματεις δια τι ου περιπατουσιν οι μαθηται σου  κατα την παραδοσιν των πρεσβυτερων αλλα κοιναισ χερσιν εσθιουσιν τον αρτον     Then question him do the Pharisees and the scribes, `Wherefore do thy disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but with unwashed hands do eat the bread?`     et interrogant eum Pharisaei et scribae quare discipuli tui non ambulant iuxta traditionem seniorum sed communibus manibus manducant panem
 
6.    He answered them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.     He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.     ο δε ειπεν αυτοις καλως επροφητευσεν ησαιας περι υμων των υποκριτων ως γεγραπται [οτι] ουτος ο λαος τοις χειλεσιν με τιμα η δε καρδια αυτων πορρω απεχει απ εμου     and he answering said to them -- `Well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you, hypocrites, as it hath been written, This people with the lips doth honor Me, and their heart is far from Me;     at ille respondens dixit eis bene prophetavit Esaias de vobis hypocritis sicut scriptum est populus hic labiis me honorat cor autem eorum longe est a me
 
7.    But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'{Isaiah 29:13}     Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.     ματην δε σεβονται με διδασκοντες διδασκαλιας ενταλματα ανθρωπων     and in vain do they worship Me, teaching teachings, commands of men;     in vanum autem me colunt docentes doctrinas praecepta hominum
 
8.    "For you set aside the commandment of God, and hold tightly to the tradition of men--the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things."     For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.     αφεντες την εντολην του θεου κρατειτε την παραδοσιν των ανθρωπων         for, having put away the command of God, ye hold the tradition of men, baptisms of pots and cups; and many other such like things ye do.`     relinquentes enim mandatum Dei tenetis traditionem hominum baptismata urceorum et calicum et alia similia his facitis multa
 
9.    He said to them, "Full well do you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.     And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.     και ελεγεν αυτοις καλως αθετειτε την εντολην του θεου ινα την παραδοσιν υμων στησητε     And he said to them, `Well do ye put away the command of God that your tradition ye may keep;     et dicebat illis bene irritum facitis praeceptum Dei ut traditionem vestram servetis
 
10.    For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother;'{Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16} and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.'{Exodus 21:17; Leviticus 20:9}     For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:     μωυσησ γαρ ειπεν τιμα τον πατερα σου και την μητερα σου και ο κακολογων πατερα η μητερα θανατω τελευτατω     for Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, He who is speaking evil of father or mother -- let him die the death;     Moses enim dixit honora patrem tuum et matrem tuam et qui maledixerit patri aut matri morte moriatur
 
11.    But you say, 'If a man tells his father or his mother, "Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban{Corban is a Hebrew word for an offering devoted to God.}, that is to say, given to God;"'     But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.     υμεις δε λεγετε εαν ειπη ανθρωπος τω πατρι η τη μητρι κορβαν ο εστιν δωρον ο εαν εξ εμου ωφεληθης     and ye say, If a man may say to father or to mother, Korban (that is, a gift), is whatever thou mayest be profited out of mine,     vos autem dicitis si dixerit homo patri aut matri corban quod est donum quodcumque ex me tibi profuerit
 
12.    then you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother,     And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;     ουκετι αφιετε αυτον ουδεν ποιησαι τω πατρι η τη μητρι     and no more do ye suffer him to do anything for his father or for his mother,     et ultra non dimittitis eum quicquam facere patri suo aut matri
 
13.    making void the word of God by your tradition, which you have handed down. You do many things like this."     Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.     ακυρουντες τον λογον του θεου τη παραδοσει υμων η παρεδωκατε και παρομοια τοιαυτα πολλα ποιειτε     setting aside the word of God for your tradition that ye delivered; and many such like things ye do.`     rescindentes verbum Dei per traditionem vestram quam tradidistis et similia huiusmodi multa facitis
 
14.    He called all the multitude to himself, and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand.     And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:     και προσκαλεσαμενος παλιν τον οχλον ελεγεν αυτοις ακουσατε μου παντες και συνετε     And having called near all the multitude, he said to them, `Hearken to me, ye all, and understand;     et advocans iterum turbam dicebat illis audite me omnes et intellegite
 
15.    There is nothing from outside of the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man.     There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.     ουδεν εστιν εξωθεν του ανθρωπου εισπορευομενον εις αυτον ο δυναται κοινωσαι αυτον αλλα τα εκ του ανθρωπου εκπορευομενα  εστιν τα κοινουντα τον ανθρωπον     there is nothing from without the man entering into him that is able to defile him, but the things coming out from him, those are the things defiling the man.     nihil est extra hominem introiens in eum quod possit eum coinquinare sed quae de homine procedunt illa sunt quae communicant hominem
 
16.    If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!"     If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.         If any hath ears to hear -- let him hear.`     et cum introisset in domum a turba interrogabant eum discipuli eius parabolam
 
17.    When he had entered into a house away from the multitude, his disciples asked him about the parable.     And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.     και οτε εισηλθεν εις οικον απο του οχλου επηρωτων αυτον οι μαθηται αυτου την παραβολην      And when he entered into a house from the multitude, his disciples were questioning him about the simile,     et ait illis sic et vos inprudentes estis non intellegitis quia omne extrinsecus introiens in hominem non potest eum communicare
 
18.    He said to them, "Are you thus without understanding also? Don't you perceive that whatever goes into the man from outside can't defile him,     And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;     και λεγει αυτοις ουτως και υμεις ασυνετοι εστε ου νοειτε οτι παν το εξωθεν εισπορευομενον εις τον ανθρωπον ου δυναται αυτον κοινωσαι     and he saith to them, `So also ye are without understanding! Do ye not perceive that nothing from without entering into the man is able to defile him?     quia non introit in cor eius sed in ventrem et in secessum exit purgans omnes escas
 
19.    because it doesn't go into his heart, but into his stomach, then into the latrine, thus purifying all foods{or, making all foods clean}?"     Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?     οτι ουκ εισπορευεται αυτου εις την καρδιαν αλλ εις την κοιλιαν και εις τον αφεδρωνα εκπορευεται καθαριζων παντα τα βρωματα     because it doth not enter into his heart, but into the belly, and into the drain it doth go out, purifying all the meats.`     dicebat autem quoniam quae de homine exeunt illa communicant hominem
 
20.    He said, "That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man.     And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.     ελεγεν δε οτι το εκ του ανθρωπου εκπορευομενον εκεινο κοινοι τον ανθρωπον     And he said -- `That which is coming out from the man, that doth defile the man;     ab intus enim de corde hominum cogitationes malae procedunt adulteria fornicationes homicidia
 
21.    For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts,     For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,     εσωθεν γαρ εκ της καρδιας των ανθρωπων οι διαλογισμοι οι κακοι εκπορευονται πορνειαι κλοπαι φονοι     for from within, out of the heart of men, the evil reasonings do come forth, adulteries, whoredoms, murders,     furta avaritiae nequitiae dolus inpudicitia oculus malus blasphemia superbia stultitia
 
22.    covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.     Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:     μοιχειαι πλεονεξιαι πονηριαι δολος ασελγεια οφθαλμος πονηρος βλασφημια υπερηφανια αφροσυνη     thefts, covetous desires, wickedness, deceit, arrogance, an evil eye, evil speaking, pride, foolishness;     omnia haec mala ab intus procedunt et communicant hominem
 
23.    All these evil things come from within, and defile the man."     All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.     παντα ταυτα τα πονηρα εσωθεν εκπορευεται και κοινοι τον ανθρωπον     all these evils do come forth from within, and they defile the man.`     et inde surgens abiit in fines Tyri et Sidonis et ingressus domum neminem voluit scire et non potuit latere
 
24.    From there he arose, and went away into the borders of Tyre and Sidon. He entered into a house, and didn't want anyone to know it, but he couldn't escape notice.     And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.     εκειθεν δε αναστας απηλθεν εις τα ορια τυρου  και εισελθων εις οικιαν ουδενα ηθελεν γνωναι και ουκ ηδυνηθη λαθειν     And from thence having risen, he went away to the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and having entered into the house, he wished none to know, and he was not able to be hid,     mulier enim statim ut audivit de eo cuius habebat filia spiritum inmundum intravit et procidit ad pedes eius
 
25.    For a woman, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard of him, came and fell down at his feet.     For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:     αλλ ευθυσ ακουσασα γυνη περι αυτου ης ειχεν το θυγατριον αυτης πνευμα ακαθαρτον ελθουσα προσεπεσεν προς τους ποδας αυτου     for a woman having heard about him, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having come, fell at his feet, --     erat autem mulier gentilis Syrophoenissa genere et rogabat eum ut daemonium eiceret de filia eius
 
26.    Now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by race. She begged him that he would cast the demon out of her daughter.     The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.     η δε γυνη ην ελληνις  συροφοινικισσα τω γενει και ηρωτα αυτον ινα το δαιμονιον εκβαλη εκ της θυγατρος αυτης     and the woman was a Greek, a Syro-Phenician by nation -- and was asking him, that the demon he may cast forth out of her daughter.     qui dixit illi sine prius saturari filios non est enim bonum sumere panem filiorum et mittere canibus
 
27.    But Jesus said to her, "Let the children be filled first, for it is not appropriate to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."     But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.     και ελεγεν   αυτη αφες πρωτον χορτασθηναι τα τεκνα ου γαρ εστιν καλον λαβειν τον αρτον των τεκνων και τοις κυναριοις βαλειν     And Jesus said to her, `Suffer first the children to be filled, for it is not good to take the children`s bread, and to cast it to the little dogs.`     at illa respondit et dicit ei utique Domine nam et catelli sub mensa comedunt de micis puerorum
 
28.    But she answered him, "Yes, Lord. Yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."     And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.     η δε απεκριθη και λεγει αυτω κυριε και τα κυναρια υποκατω της τραπεζης εσθιουσιν απο των ψιχιων των παιδιων     And she answered and saith to him, `Yes, sir; for the little dogs also under the table do eat of the children`s crumbs.`     et ait illi propter hunc sermonem vade exiit daemonium de filia tua
 
29.    He said to her, "For this saying, go your way. The demon has gone out of your daughter."     And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.     και ειπεν αυτη δια τουτον τον λογον υπαγε εξεληλυθεν  εκ της θυγατρος σου το δαιμονιον     And he said to her, `Because of this word go; the demon hath gone forth out of thy daughter;`     et cum abisset domum suam invenit puellam iacentem supra lectum et daemonium exisse
 
30.    She went away to her house, and found the child having been laid on the bed, with the demon gone out.     And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.     και απελθουσα εις τον οικον αυτης ευρεν το παιδιον βεβλημενον επι την κλινην και το δαιμονιον εξεληλυθος        and having come away to her house, she found the demon gone forth, and the daughter laid upon the couch.     et iterum exiens de finibus Tyri venit per Sidonem ad mare Galilaeae inter medios fines Decapoleos
 
31.    Again he departed from the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and came to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the region of Decapolis.     And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.     και παλιν εξελθων εκ των οριων τυρου  ηλθεν δια σιδωνοσ εισ την θαλασσαν της γαλιλαιας ανα μεσον των οριων δεκαπολεως     And again, having gone forth from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis,     et adducunt ei surdum et mutum et deprecantur eum ut inponat illi manum
 
32.    They brought to him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech. They begged him to lay his hand on him.     And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.     και φερουσιν αυτω κωφον και μογιλαλον και παρακαλουσιν αυτον ινα επιθη αυτω την χειρα     and they bring to him a deaf, stuttering man, and they call on him that he may put the hand on him.     et adprehendens eum de turba seorsum misit digitos suos in auriculas et expuens tetigit linguam eius
 
33.    He took him aside from the multitude, privately, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue.     And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;     και απολαβομενος αυτον απο του οχλου κατ ιδιαν εβαλεν τους δακτυλους αυτου εις τα ωτα αυτου και πτυσας ηψατο της γλωσσης αυτου     And having taken him away from the multitude by himself, he put his fingers to his ears, and having spit, he touched his tongue,     et suspiciens in caelum ingemuit et ait illi eppheta quod est adaperire
 
34.    Looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha!" that is, "Be opened!"     And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.     και αναβλεψας εις τον ουρανον εστεναξεν και λεγει αυτω εφφαθα ο εστιν διανοιχθητι     and having looked to the heaven, he sighed, and saith to him, `Ephphatha,` that is, `Be thou opened;`     et statim apertae sunt aures eius et solutum est vinculum linguae eius et loquebatur recte
 
35.    Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was released, and he spoke clearly.     And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.     και [ευθεωσ] ηνοιγησαν αυτου αι ακοαι και ελυθη ο δεσμος της γλωσσης αυτου και ελαλει ορθως     and immediately were his ears opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he was speaking plain.     et praecepit illis ne cui dicerent quanto autem eis praecipiebat tanto magis plus praedicabant
 
36.    He commanded them that they should tell no one, but the more he commanded them, so much the more widely they proclaimed it.     And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;     και διεστειλατο αυτοις ινα μηδενι λεγωσιν οσον δε αυτοις διεστελλετο αυτοι μαλλον περισσοτερον εκηρυσσον     And he charged them that they may tell no one, but the more he was charging them, the more abundantly they were proclaiming it,     et eo amplius admirabantur dicentes bene omnia fecit et surdos facit audire et mutos loqui
 
37.    They were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well. He makes even the deaf hear, and the mute speak!"     And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.     και υπερπερισσως εξεπλησσοντο λεγοντες καλως παντα πεποιηκεν και τους κωφους ποιει ακουειν και [τουσ] αλαλους λαλειν     and they were being beyond measure astonished, saying, `Well hath he done all things; both the deaf he doth make to hear, and the dumb to speak.`
