    VYHY BYMYM HHM VMLK 'aYN BYShUr'aL VYHY 'aYSh LVY GUr BYUrKThY HUr- 'aPhUrYM VYQCh-LV 'aShH PhYLGSh MBYTh LChM YHVDH.     And it cometh to pass, in those days, when there is no king in Israel, that there is a man a Levite, a sojourner in the sides of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he taketh to him a wife, a concubine, out of Beth-Lehem-Judah;     fuit quidam vir Levites habitans in latere montis Ephraim qui accepit uxorem de Bethleem Iuda
 
2.    His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father's house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there the space of four months.     And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.     ותזנה  עליו  פילגשו 
ותלך  מאתו  אל־בית
אביה  אל־בית  לחם
יהודה  ותהי־  שם
ימים  ארבעה  חדשים׃
    VThZNH 'yLYV PhYLGShV VThLK M'aThV 'aL-BYTh 'aBYH 'aL-BYTh LChM YHVDH VThHY- ShM YMYM 'aUrB'yH ChDShYM.     and commit whoredom against him doth his concubine, and she goeth from him unto the house of her father, unto Beth-Lehem-Judah, and is there days -- four months.     quae reliquit eum et reversa est in domum patris sui Bethleem mansitque apud eum quattuor mensibus
 
3.    Her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of donkeys: and she brought him into her father's house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.     And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.     ויקם  אישה  וילך 
אחריה  לדבר  על־לבה
להשיבו  ונערו  עמו
וצמד  חמרים
ותביאהו  בית  אביה
ויראהו  אבי  הנערה
וישמח  לקראתו׃
    VYQM 'aYShH VYLK 'aChUrYH LDBUr 'yL-LBH LHShYBV VN'yUrV 'yMV VTShMD ChMUrYM VThBY'aHV BYTh 'aBYH VYUr'aHV 'aBY HN'yUrH VYShMCh LQUr'aThV.     And her husband riseth and goeth after her, to speak unto her heart, to bring her back, and his young man is with him, and a couple of asses; and she bringeth him into the house of her father, and the father of the young woman seeth him, and rejoiceth to meet him.     secutusque est eam vir suus volens ei reconciliari atque blandiri et secum reducere habens in comitatu puerum et duos asinos quae suscepit eum et introduxit in domum patris sui quod cum audisset socer eius eumque vidisset occurrit ei laetus
 
4.    His father-in-law, the young lady's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they ate and drink, and lodged there.     And his father in law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.     ויחזק־בו  חתנו  אבי 
הנערה  וישב  אתו
שלשת  ימים  ויאכלו
וישתו  וילינו  שם׃
    VYChZQ-BV ChThNV 'aBY HN'yUrH VYShB 'aThV ShLShTh YMYM VY'aKLV VYShThV VYLYNV ShM.     And keep hold on him doth his father-in-law, father of the young woman, and he abideth with him three days, and they eat and drink, and lodge there.     et amplexatus est hominem mansitque gener in domo soceri tribus diebus comedens cum eo et bibens familiariter
 
5.    It happened on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the young lady's father said to his son-in-law, "Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way."     And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel's father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.     ויהי  ביום  הרביעי 
וישכימו  בבקר  ויקם
ללכת  ויאמר  אבי
הנערה  אל־  חתנו
סעד  לבך  פת־לחם
ואחר  תלכו׃
    VYHY BYVM HUrBY'yY VYShKYMV BBQUr VYQM LLKTh VY'aMUr 'aBY HN'yUrH 'aL- ChThNV S'yD LBK PhTh-LChM V'aChUr ThLKV.     And it cometh to pass, on the fourth day, that they rise early in the morning, and he riseth to go, and the father of the young woman saith unto his son-in-law, `Support thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye go on.`     die autem quarto de nocte consurgens proficisci voluit quem tenuit socer et ait ad eum gusta prius pauxillum panis et conforta stomachum et sic proficisceris
 
6.    So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together: and the young lady's father said to the man, "Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry."     And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel's father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.     וישבו  ויאכלו 
שניהם  יחדו  וישתו
ויאמר  אבי  הנערה
אל־האיש  הואל־נא
ולין  ויטב  לבך׃
    VYShBV VY'aKLV ShNYHM YChDV VYShThV VY'aMUr 'aBY HN'yUrH 'aL-H'aYSh HV'aL-N'a VLYN VYTB LBK.     And they sit and eat both of them together, and drink, and the father of the young woman saith unto the man, `Be willing, I pray thee, and lodge all night, and let thy heart be glad.`     sederuntque simul et comederunt ac biberunt dixitque pater puellae ad generum suum quaeso te ut hodie hic maneas pariterque laetemur
 
7.    The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.     And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.     ויקם  האיש  ללכת 
ויפצר־בו  חתנו
וישב  וילן  שם׃
    VYQM H'aYSh LLKTh VYPhTShUr-BV ChThNV VYShB VYLN ShM.     And the man riseth to go, and his father-in-law presseth on him, and he turneth back and lodgeth there.     at ille consurgens coepit velle proficisci et nihilominus obnixe eum socer tenuit et apud se fecit manere
 
8.    He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady's father said, "Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines;" and they both ate.     And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel's father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.     וישכם  בבקר  ביום 
החמישי  ללכת  ויאמר
אבי  הנערה  סעד־נא
לבבך  והתמהמהו
עד־נטות  היום
ויאכלו  שניהם׃
    VYShKM BBQUr BYVM HChMYShY LLKTh VY'aMUr 'aBY HN'yUrH S'yD-N'a LBBK VHThMHMHV 'yD-NTVTh HYVM VY'aKLV ShNYHM.     And he riseth early in the morning, on the fifth day, to go, and the father of the young woman saith, `Support, I pray thee, thy heart;` and they have tarried till the turning of the day, and they eat, both of them.     mane facto parabat Levites iter cui rursum socer oro te inquit ut paululum cibi capias et adsumptis viribus donec increscat dies postea proficiscaris comederunt ergo simul
 
9.    When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady's father, said to him, "Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night: behold, the day grows to an end, lodge here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home."     And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel's father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.     ויקם  האיש  ללכת 
הוא  ופילגשו  ונערו
ויאמר  לו  חתנו  אבי
הנערה  הנה  נא  רפה
היום  לערב  לינו־נא
הנה  חנות  היום  לין
פה  וייטב  לבבך
והשכמתם  מחר
לדרככם  והלכת
לאהלך׃
    VYQM H'aYSh LLKTh HV'a VPhYLGShV VN'yUrV VY'aMUr LV ChThNV 'aBY HN'yUrH HNH N'a UrPhH HYVM L'yUrB LYNV-N'a HNH ChNVTh HYVM LYN PhH VYYTB LBBK VHShKMThM MChUr LDUrKKM VHLKTh L'aHLK.     And the man riseth to go, he and his concubine, and his young man, and his father-in-law, father of the young woman, saith to him, `Lo, I pray thee, the day hath fallen toward evening, lodge all night, I pray thee; lo, the declining of the day! lodge here, and let thine heart be glad -- and ye have risen early to-morrow for your journey, and thou hast gone to thy tent.`     surrexitque adulescens ut pergeret cum uxore sua et puero cui rursum locutus est socer considera quod dies ad occasum declivior sit et propinquet ad vesperum mane apud me etiam hodie et duc laetum diem et cras proficisceris ut vadas in domum tuam
 
10.    But the man wouldn't stay that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of donkeys saddled; his concubine also was with him.     But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.     ולא־אבה  האיש  ללון 
ויקם  וילך  ויבא
עד־נכח  יבוס  היא
ירושלם  ועמו  צמד
חמורים  חבושים
ופילגשו  עמו׃
    VL'a-'aBH H'aYSh LLVN VYQM VYLK VYB'a 'yD-NKCh YBVS HY'a YUrVShLM V'yMV TShMD ChMVUrYM ChBVShYM VPhYLGShV 'yMV.     And the man hath not been willing to lodge all night, and he riseth, and goeth, and cometh in till over-against Jebus (It is Jerusalem), and with him are a couple of asses saddled; and his concubine is with him.     noluit gener adquiescere sermonibus eius sed statim perrexit et venit contra Iebus quae altero nomine vocabatur Hierusalem ducens secum duos asinos onustos et concubinam
 
11.    When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, "Please come and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it."     And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.     הם  עם־יבוס  והיום 
רד  מאד  ויאמר  הנער
אל־אדניו  לכה־נא
ונסורה  אל־
עיר־היבוסי  הזאת
ונלין  בה׃
    HM 'yM-YBVS VHYVM UrD M'aD VY'aMUr HN'yUr 'aL-'aDNYV LKH-N'a VNSVUrH 'aL- 'yYUr-HYBVSY HZ'aTh VNLYN BH.     They are near Jebus, and the day hath gone greatly down, and the young man saith unto his lord, `Come, I pray thee, and we turn aside unto this city of the Jebusite, and lodge in it.`     iamque aderant iuxta Iebus et dies mutabatur in noctem dixitque puer ad dominum suum veni obsecro declinemus ad urbem Iebuseorum et maneamus in ea
 
12.    His master said to him, "We won't turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah."     And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.     ויאמר  אליו  אדניו 
לא  נסור  אל־עיר
נכרי  אשר  לא־מבני
ישראל  הנה  ועברנו
עד־גבעה׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYV 'aDNYV L'a NSVUr 'aL-'yYUr NKUrY 'aShUr L'a-MBNY YShUr'aL HNH V'yBUrNV 'yD-GB'yH.     And his lord saith unto him, `Let us not turn aside unto the city of a stranger, that is not of the sons of Israel, thither, but we have passed over unto Gibeah.`     cui respondit dominus non ingrediar oppidum gentis alienae quae non est de filiis Israhel sed transibo usque Gabaa
 
13.    He said to his servant, "Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah."     And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.     ויאמר  לנערו  לך 
ונקרבה  באחד
המקמות  ולנו  בגבעה
או  ברמה׃
    VY'aMUr LN'yUrV LK VNQUrBH B'aChD HMQMVTh VLNV BGB'yH 'aV BUrMH.     And he saith to his young man, `Come, and we draw near to one of the places, and have lodged in Gibeah, or in Ramah.`     et cum illuc pervenero manebimus in ea aut certe in urbe Rama
 
14.    So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near to Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.     And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.     ויעברו  וילכו  ותבא 
להם  השמש  אצל
הגבעה  אשר  לבנימן׃
    VY'yBUrV VYLKV VThB'a LHM HShMSh 'aTShL HGB'yH 'aShUr LBNYMN.     And they pass over, and go on, and the sun goeth in upon them near Gibeah, which is to Benjamin;     transierunt igitur Iebus et coeptum carpebant iter occubuitque eis sol iuxta Gabaa quae est in tribu Beniamin
 
15.    They turned aside there, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man who took them into his house to lodge.     And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.     ויסרו  שם  לבוא 
ללון  בגבעה  ויבא
וישב  ברחוב  העיר
ואין  איש  מאסף־
אותם  הביתה  ללון׃
    VYSUrV ShM LBV'a LLVN BGB'yH VYB'a VYShB BUrChVB H'yYUr V'aYN 'aYSh M'aSPh- 'aVThM HBYThH LLVN.     and they turn aside there to go in to lodge in Gibeah, and he goeth in and sitteth in a broad place of the city, and there is no man gathering them into the house to lodge.     deverteruntque ad eam ut manerent ibi quo cum intrassent sedebant in platea civitatis et nullus eos recipere volebat hospitio
 
16.    Behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even: now the man was of the hill country of Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.     And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.     והנה  איש  זקן  בא 
מן־מעשהו  מן־השדה
בערב  והאיש  מהר
אפרים  והוא־  גר
בגבעה  ואנשי  המקום
בני  ימיני׃
    VHNH 'aYSh ZQN B'a MN-M'yShHV MN-HShDH B'yUrB VH'aYSh MHUr 'aPhUrYM VHV'a- GUr BGB'yH V'aNShY HMQVM BNY YMYNY.     And lo, a man, an aged one, hath come from his work from the field in the evening, and the man is of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he is a sojourner in Gibeah, and the men of the place are Benjamites.     et ecce apparuit homo senex revertens de agro et de opere suo vespere qui et ipse erat de monte Ephraim et peregrinus habitabat in Gabaa homines autem regionis illius erant filii Iemini
 
17.    He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, "Where are you going? Where did you come from?"     And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?     וישא  עיניו  וירא 
את־האיש  הארח  ברחב
העיר  ויאמר  האיש
הזקן  אנה  תלך
ומאין  תבוא׃
    VYSh'a 'yYNYV VYUr'a 'aTh-H'aYSh H'aUrCh BUrChB H'yYUr VY'aMUr H'aYSh HZQN 'aNH ThLK VM'aYN ThBV'a.     And he lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the man, the traveller, in a broad place of the city, and the aged man saith, `Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?`     elevatisque oculis vidit senex sedentem hominem cum sarcinulis suis in platea civitatis et dixit ad eum unde venis et quo vadis
 
18.    He said to him, "We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to the house of Yahweh; and there is no man who takes me into his house.     And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.     ויאמר  אליו  עברים 
אנחנו  מבית־לחם
יהודה  עד־ירכתי
הר־אפרים  משם  אנכי
ואלך  עד־בית  לחם
יהודה  ואת־בית
יהוה  אני  הלך  ואין
איש  מאסף  אותי
הביתה׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYV 'yBUrYM 'aNChNV MBYTh-LChM YHVDH 'yD-YUrKThY HUr-'aPhUrYM MShM 'aNKY V'aLK 'yD-BYTh LChM YHVDH V'aTh-BYTh YHVH 'aNY HLK V'aYN 'aYSh M'aSPh 'aVThY HBYThH.     And he saith unto him, `We are passing over from Beth-Lehem-Judah unto the sides of the hill-country of Ephraim -- thence I am, and I go unto Beth-Lehem-Judah; and to the house of Jehovah I am going, and there is no man gathering me into the house,     qui respondit ei profecti sumus de Bethleem Iuda et pergimus ad locum nostrum qui est in latere montis Ephraim unde ieramus Bethleem et nunc vadimus ad domum Dei nullusque nos sub tectum suum vult recipere
 
19.    Yet there is both straw and provender for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your handmaid, and for the young man who is with your servants: there is no want of anything."     Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.     וגם־תבן  גם־מספוא 
יש  לחמורינו  וגם
לחם  ויין  יש־לי
ולאמתך  ולנער
עם־עבדיך  אין
מחסור  כל־דבר׃
    VGM-ThBN GM-MSPhV'a YSh LChMVUrYNV VGM LChM VYYN YSh-LY VL'aMThK VLN'yUr 'yM-'yBDYK 'aYN MChSVUr KL-DBUr.     and both straw and provender are for our asses, and also bread and wine there are for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man with thy servants; there is no lack of anything.`     habentes paleas et faenum in asinorum pabulum et panem ac vinum in meos et ancillae tuae usus et pueri qui mecum est nulla re indigemus nisi hospitio
 
20.    The old man said, "Peace be to you; howsoever let all your wants lie on me; only don't lodge in the street."     And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.     ויאמר  האיש  הזקן 
שלום  לך  רק
כל־מחסורך  עלי  רק
ברחוב  אל־תלן׃
    VY'aMUr H'aYSh HZQN ShLVM LK UrQ KL-MChSVUrK 'yLY UrQ BUrChVB 'aL-ThLN.     And the old man saith, `Peace to thee; only, all thy lack is on me, only in the broad place lodge not.`     cui respondit senex pax tecum sit ego praebebo omnia quae necessaria sunt tantum quaeso ne in platea maneas
 
21.    So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder; and they washed their feet, and ate and drink.     So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.     ויביאהו  לביתו 
ויבול  לחמורים
וירחצו  רגליהם
ויאכלו  וישתו׃
    VYBY'aHV LBYThV VYBVL LChMVUrYM VYUrChTShV UrGLYHM VY'aKLV VYShThV.     And he bringeth him in to his house, and mixeth food for the asses, and they wash their feet, and eat and drink.     introduxitque eum in domum suam et pabulum asinis praebuit ac postquam laverunt pedes suos recepit eos in convivium
 
22.    As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, "Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may have sex with him!"     Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.     המה  מיטיבים 
את־לבם  והנה  אנשי
העיר  אנשי
בני־בליעל  נסבו
את־  הבית  מתדפקים
על־הדלת  ויאמרו
אל־האיש  בעל  הבית
הזקן  לאמר  הוצא
את־  האיש  אשר־בא
אל־ביתך  ונדענו׃
    HMH MYTYBYM 'aTh-LBM VHNH 'aNShY H'yYUr 'aNShY BNY-BLY'yL NSBV 'aTh- HBYTh MThDPhQYM 'yL-HDLTh VY'aMUrV 'aL-H'aYSh B'yL HBYTh HZQN L'aMUr HVTSh'a 'aTh- H'aYSh 'aShUr-B'a 'aL-BYThK VND'yNV.     They are making their heart glad, and lo, men of the city, men -- sons of worthlessness -- have gone round about the house, beating on the door, and they speak unto the old man, the master of the house, saying, `Bring out the man who hath come unto thine house, and we know him.`     illis epulantibus et post laborem itineris cibo ac potu reficientibus corpora venerunt viri civitatis illius filii Belial id est absque iugo et circumdantes domum senis fores pulsare coeperunt clamantes ad dominum domus atque dicentes educ virum qui ingressus est domum tuam ut abutamur eo
 
23.    The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, "No, my brothers, please don't act so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, don't do this folly.     And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.     ויצא  אליהם  האיש 
בעל  הבית  ויאמר
אלהם  אל־אחי
אל־תרעו  נא  אחרי
אשר־בא  האיש  הזה
אל־ביתי  אל־תעשו
את־הנבלה  הזאת׃
    VYTSh'a 'aLYHM H'aYSh B'yL HBYTh VY'aMUr 'aLHM 'aL-'aChY 'aL-ThUr'yV N'a 'aChUrY 'aShUr-B'a H'aYSh HZH 'aL-BYThY 'aL-Th'yShV 'aTh-HNBLH HZ'aTh.     And the man, the master of the house, goeth out unto them, and saith unto them, `Nay, my brethren, do not evil, I pray you, after that this man hath come in unto my house, do not this folly;     egressusque est ad eos senex et ait nolite fratres nolite facere malum hoc quia ingressus est homo hospitium meum et cessate ab hac stultitia
 
24.    Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don't do any such folly."     Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.     הנה  בתי  הבתולה

וענו  אותם  ועשו
להם  הטוב  בעיניכם
ולאיש  הזה  לא  תעשו
דבר  הנבלה  הזאת׃

28.    He said to her, "Get up, and let us be going!" but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.     And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.     ויאמר  אליה  קומי 
ונלכה  ואין  ענה
ויקחה  על־החמור
ויקם  האיש  וילך
למקמו׃

30.    It was so, that all who saw it said, "There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day!
