1.    The children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh: and Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.     And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.     ויעשו  בני־ישראל 
הרע  בעיני  יהוה
ויתנם  יהוה
ביד־מדין  שבע
שנים׃
    VY'yShV BNY-YShUr'aL HUr'y B'yYNY YHVH VYThNM YHVH BYD-MDYN ShB'y ShNYM.     And the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and Jehovah giveth them into the hand of Midian seven years,     fecerunt autem filii Israhel malum in conspectu Domini qui tradidit eos in manu Madian septem annis
 
2.    The hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.     And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.     ותעז  יד־מדין

    VTh'yZ YD-MDYN 'yL-YShUr'aL MPhNY MDYN 'yShV LHM BNY YShUr'aL 'aTh-HMNHUrVTh 'aShUr BHUrYM V'aTh-HM'yUrVTh V'aTh-HMTShDVTh.     and the hand of Midian is strong against Israel, from the presence of Midian have the sons of Israel made for themselves the flowings which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.     et oppressi sunt valde ab eis feceruntque sibi antra et speluncas in montibus et munitissima ad repugnandum loca
 
3.    So it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;     And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;     והיה  אם־זרע  ישראל 
ועלה  מדין  ועמלק
ובני־קדם  ועלו
עליו׃
    VHYH 'aM-ZUr'y YShUr'aL V'yLH MDYN V'yMLQ VBNY-QDM V'yLV 'yLYV.     And it hath been, if Israel hath sowed, that Midian hath come up, and Amalek, and the sons of the east, yea, they have come up against him,     cumque sevisset Israhel ascendebat Madian et Amalech et ceteri orientalium nationum
 
4.    and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, until you come to Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor donkey.     And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.     ויחנו  עליהם 
וישחיתו  את־יבול
הארץ  עד־בואך  עזה

וחמור׃
    VYChNV 'yLYHM VYShChYThV 'aTh-YBVL H'aUrTSh 'yD-BV'aK 'yZH VL'a-YSh'aYUrV MChYH BYShUr'aL VShH VShVUr VChMVUr.     and encamp against them, and destroy the increase of the land till thine entering Gaza; and they leave no sustenance in Israel, either sheep, or ox, or ass;     et apud eos figentes tentoria sicut erant in herbis cuncta vastabant usque ad introitum Gazae nihilque omnino ad vitam pertinens relinquebant in Israhel non oves non boves non asinos
 
5.    For they came up with their livestock and their tents; they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it.     For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.     כי  הם  ומקניהם 
יעלו  ואהליהם  יבאו
כדי־ארבה  לרב  ולהם
ולגמליהם  אין  מספר
ויבאו  בארץ  לשחתה׃
    KY HM VMQNYHM Y'yLV V'aHLYHM YB'aV KDY-'aUrBH LUrB VLHM VLGMLYHM 'aYN MSPhUr VYB'aV B'aUrTSh LShChThH.     for they and their cattle come up, with their tents; they come in as the fulness of the locust for multitude, and of them and of their cattle there is no number, and they come into the land to destroy it.     ipsi enim et universi greges eorum veniebant cum tabernaculis et instar lucustarum universa conplebant innumera multitudo hominum et camelorum quicquid tetigerant devastantes
 
6.    Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to Yahweh.     And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.     וידל  ישראל  מאד 
מפני  מדין  ויזעקו
בני־ישראל
אל־יהוה׃
    VYDL YShUr'aL M'aD MPhNY MDYN VYZ'yQV BNY-YShUr'aL 'aL-YHVH.     And Israel is very weak from the presence of Midian, and the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah.     humiliatusque est Israhel valde in conspectu Madian
 
7.    It happened, when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh because of Midian,     And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,     ויהי  כי־זעקו 
בני־ישראל  אל־יהוה
על  אדות  מדין׃
    VYHY KY-Z'yQV BNY-YShUr'aL 'aL-YHVH 'yL 'aDVTh MDYN.     And it cometh to pass when the sons of Israel have cried unto Jehovah, concerning Midian,     et clamavit ad Dominum postulans auxilium contra Madianitas
 
8.    that Yahweh sent a prophet to the children of Israel: and he said to them, "Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, 'I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;     That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;     וישלח  יהוה  איש 
נביא  אל־בני  ישראל
ויאמר  להם  כה־אמר
יהוה  אלהי  ישראל
אנכי  העליתי  אתכם
ממצרים  ואציא  אתכם
מבית  עבדים׃
    VYShLCh YHVH 'aYSh NBY'a 'aL-BNY YShUr'aL VY'aMUr LHM KH-'aMUr YHVH 'aLHY YShUr'aL 'aNKY H'yLYThY 'aThKM MMTShUrYM V'aTShY'a 'aThKM MBYTh 'yBDYM.     that Jehovah sendeth a man, a prophet, unto the sons of Israel, and he saith to them, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I -- I have brought you up out of Egypt, and I bring you out from a house of servants,     qui misit ad eos virum prophetam et locutus est haec dicit Dominus Deus Israhel ego vos feci conscendere de Aegypto et eduxi de domo servitutis
 
9.    and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;     And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;     ואצל  אתכם  מיד

10.    and I said to you, "I am Yahweh your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell." But you have not listened to my voice.'"     And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.     ואמרה  לכם  אני 
יהוה  אלהיכם  לא
תיראו  את־אלהי
האמרי  אשר  אתם
יושבים  בארצם  ולא
שמעתם  בקולי׃
    V'aMUrH LKM 'aNY YHVH 'aLHYKM L'a ThYUr'aV 'aTh-'aLHY H'aMUrY 'aShUr 'aThM YVShBYM B'aUrTShM VL'a ShM'yThM BQVLY.     and I say to you, I am Jehovah your God, ye do not fear the gods of the Amorite in whose land ye are dwelling: -- and ye have not hearkened to My voice.`     et dixi ego Dominus Deus vester ne timeatis deos Amorreorum in quorum terra habitatis et noluistis audire vocem meam
 
11.    The angel of Yahweh came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained to Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.     And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.     ויבא  מלאך  יהוה 
וישב  תחת  האלה  אשר
בעפרה  אשר  ליואש
אבי  העזרי  וגדעון
בנו  חבט  חטים  בגת
להניס  מפני  מדין׃
    VYB'a ML'aK YHVH VYShB ThChTh H'aLH 'aShUr B'yPhUrH 'aShUr LYV'aSh 'aBY H'yZUrY VGD'yVN BNV ChBT ChTYM BGTh LHNYS MPhNY MDYN.     And the messenger of Jehovah cometh and sitteth under the oak which is in Ophrah, which is to Joash the Abi-Ezrite, and Gideon his son is beating out wheat in the wine-press, to remove it from the presence of the Midianites;     venit autem angelus Domini et sedit sub quercu quae erat in Ephra et pertinebat ad Ioas patrem familiae Ezri cumque Gedeon filius eius excuteret atque purgaret frumenta in torculari ut fugeret Madian
 
12.    The angel of Yahweh appeared to him, and said to him, "Yahweh is with you, you mighty man of valor!"     And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.     וירא  אליו  מלאך 
יהוה  ויאמר  אליו
יהוה  עמך  גבור
החיל׃
    VYUr'a 'aLYV ML'aK YHVH VY'aMUr 'aLYV YHVH 'yMK GBVUr HChYL.     and the messenger of Jehovah appeareth unto him, and saith unto him, `Jehovah is with thee, O mighty one of valour.`     apparuit ei et ait Dominus tecum virorum fortissime
 
13.    Gideon said to him, "Oh, my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, 'Didn't Yahweh bring us up from Egypt?' But now Yahweh has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian."     And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.     ויאמר  אליו  גדעון 
בי  אדני  ויש  יהוה
עמנו  ולמה  מצאתנו
כל־זאת  ואיה
כל־נפלאתיו  אשר
ספרו־לנו  אבותינו
לאמר  הלא  ממצרים
העלנו  יהוה  ועתה
נטשנו  יהוה  ויתננו
בכף־מדין׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYV GD'yVN BY 'aDNY VYSh YHVH 'yMNV VLMH MTSh'aThNV KL-Z'aTh V'aYH KL-NPhL'aThYV 'aShUr SPhUrV-LNV 'aBVThYNV L'aMUr HL'a MMTShUrYM H'yLNV YHVH V'yThH NTShNV YHVH VYThNNV BKPh-MDYN.     And Gideon saith unto him, `O, my lord -- and Jehovah is with us! -- and why hath all this found us? and where are all His wonders which our fathers recounted to us, saying, Hath not Jehovah brought us up out of Egypt? and now Jehovah hath left us, and doth give us into the hand of Midian.`     dixitque ei Gedeon obsecro Domine si Dominus nobiscum est cur adprehenderunt nos haec omnia ubi sunt mirabilia eius quae narraverunt patres nostri atque dixerunt de Aegypto eduxit nos Dominus nunc autem dereliquit nos et tradidit in manibus Madian
 
14.    Yahweh looked at him, and said, "Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Haven't I sent you?"     And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?     ויפן  אליו  יהוה 
ויאמר  לך  בכחך  זה
והושעת  את־ישראל
מכף  מדין  הלא
שלחתיך׃
    VYPhN 'aLYV YHVH VY'aMUr LK BKChK ZH VHVSh'yTh 'aTh-YShUr'aL MKPh MDYN HL'a ShLChThYK.     And Jehovah turneth unto him and saith, `Go in this -- thy power; and thou hast saved Israel out of the hand of Midian -- have not I sent thee.`     respexitque ad eum Dominus et ait vade in hac fortitudine tua et liberabis Israhel de manu Madian scito quod miserim te
 
15.    He said to him, "O Lord{The word translated "Lord" is "Adonai."}, how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house."     And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.     ויאמר  אליו  בי 
אדני  במה  אושיע
את־ישראל  הנה  אלפי
הדל  במנשה  ואנכי
הצעיר  בבית  אבי׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYV BY 'aDNY BMH 'aVShY'y 'aTh-YShUr'aL HNH 'aLPhY HDL BMNShH V'aNKY HTSh'yYUr BBYTh 'aBY.     And he saith unto him, `O, my lord, wherewith do I save Israel? lo, my chief is weak in Manasseh, and I the least in the house of my father.`     qui respondens ait obsecro Domine mi in quo liberabo Israhel ecce familia mea infima est in Manasse et ego minimus in domo patris mei
 
16.    Yahweh said to him, "Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man."     And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.     ויאמר  אליו  יהוה 
כי  אהיה  עמך  והכית
את־מדין  כאיש  אחד׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYV YHVH KY 'aHYH 'yMK VHKYTh 'aTh-MDYN K'aYSh 'aChD.     And Jehovah saith unto him, `Because I am with thee -- thou hast smitten the Midianites as one man.`     dixitque ei Dominus ego ero tecum et percuties Madian quasi unum virum
 
17.    He said to him, "If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is you who talk with me.     And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.     ויאמר  אליו  אם־נא 
מצאתי  חן  בעיניך
ועשית  לי  אות  שאתה
מדבר  עמי׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYV 'aM-N'a MTSh'aThY ChN B'yYNYK V'yShYTh LY 'aVTh Sh'aThH MDBUr 'yMY.     And he saith unto Him, `If, I pray Thee, I have found grace in Thine eyes, then Thou hast done for me a sign that Thou art speaking with me.     et ille si inveni inquit gratiam coram te da mihi signum quod tu sis qui loquaris ad me
 
18.    Please don't go away, until I come to you, and bring out my present, and lay it before you." He said, "I will wait until you come back."     Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.     אל־נא  תמש  מזה 
עד־באי  אליך
והצאתי  את־מנחתי
והנחתי  לפניך
ויאמר  אנכי  אשב  עד
שובך׃
    'aL-N'a ThMSh MZH 'yD-B'aY 'aLYK VHTSh'aThY 'aTh-MNChThY VHNChThY LPhNYK VY'aMUr 'aNKY 'aShB 'yD ShVBK.     Move not, I pray Thee, from this, till my coming in unto Thee, and I have brought out my present, and put it before Thee;` and he saith, `I -- I do abide till thy return.`     ne recedas hinc donec revertar ad te portans sacrificium et offerens tibi qui respondit ego praestolabor adventum tuum
 
19.    Gideon went in, and prepared a young goat, and unleavened cakes of an ephah{1 ephah is about 22 litres or about 2/3 of a bushel} of meal. He put the meat in a basket and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it.     And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.     וגדעון  בא  ויעש 
גדי־עזים
ואיפת־קמח  מצות
הבשר  שם  בסל  והמרק
שם  בפרור  ויוצא
אליו  אל־תחת  האלה
ויגש׃
    VGD'yVN B'a VY'ySh GDY-'yZYM V'aYPhTh-QMCh MTShVTh HBShUr ShM BSL VHMUrQ ShM BPhUrVUr VYVTSh'a 'aLYV 'aL-ThChTh H'aLH VYGSh.     And Gideon hath gone in, and prepareth a kid of the goats, and of an ephah of flour unleavened things; the flesh he hath put in a basket, and the broth he hath put in a pot, and he bringeth out unto Him, unto the place of the oak, and bringeth it nigh.     ingressus est itaque Gedeon et coxit hedum et de farinae modio azymos panes carnesque ponens in canistro et ius carnium mittens in ollam tulit omnia sub quercum et obtulit ei
 
20.    The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth." He did so.     And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.     ויאמר  אליו  מלאך 
האלהים  קח  את־הבשר
ואת־המצות  והנח
אל־הסלע  הלז
ואת־המרק  שפוך
ויעש  כן׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYV ML'aK H'aLHYM QCh 'aTh-HBShUr V'aTh-HMTShVTh VHNCh 'aL-HSL'y HLZ V'aTh-HMUrQ ShPhVK VY'ySh KN.     And the messenger of God saith unto him, `Take the flesh and the unleavened things, and place on this rock -- and the broth pour out;` and he doth so.     cui dixit angelus Domini tolle carnes et panes azymos et pone super petram illam et ius desuper funde cumque fecisset ita
 
21.    Then the angel of Yahweh stretched out the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire went up out of the rock, and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of Yahweh departed out of his sight.     Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.     וישלח  מלאך  יהוה 
את־קצה  המשענת  אשר
בידו  ויגע  בבשר
ובמצות  ותעל  האש
מן־הצור  ותאכל
את־הבשר  ואת־המצות
ומלאך  יהוה  הלך
מעיניו׃
    VYShLCh ML'aK YHVH 'aTh-QTShH HMSh'yNTh 'aShUr BYDV VYG'y BBShUr VBMTShVTh VTh'yL H'aSh MN-HTShVUr VTh'aKL 'aTh-HBShUr V'aTh-HMTShVTh VML'aK YHVH HLK M'yYNYV.     And the messenger of Jehovah putteth forth the end of the staff which is in His hand, and cometh against the flesh, and against the unleavened things, and the fire goeth up out of the rock and consumeth the flesh and the unleavened things -- and the messenger of Jehovah hath gone from his eyes.     extendit angelus Domini summitatem virgae quam tenebat in manu et tetigit carnes et azymos panes ascenditque ignis de petra et carnes azymosque consumpsit angelus autem Domini evanuit ex oculis eius
 
22.    Gideon saw that he was the angel of Yahweh; and Gideon said, "Alas, Lord Yahweh! Because I have seen the angel of Yahweh face to face!"     And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O LORD God! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.     וירא  גדעון 
כי־מלאך  יהוה  הוא
ויאמר  גדעון  אהה
אדני  יהוה  כי־על־
כן  ראיתי  מלאך
יהוה  פנים
אל־פנים׃
    VYUr'a GD'yVN KY-ML'aK YHVH HV'a VY'aMUr GD'yVN 'aHH 'aDNY YHVH KY-'yL- KN Ur'aYThY ML'aK YHVH PhNYM 'aL-PhNYM.     And Gideon seeth that He is a messenger of Jehovah, and Gideon saith, `Alas, Lord Jehovah! because that I have seen a messenger of Jehovah face to face!`     vidensque Gedeon quod esset angelus Domini ait heu mihi Domine Deus quia vidi angelum Domini facie ad faciem
 
23.    Yahweh said to him, "Peace be to you! Don't be afraid. You shall not die."     And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.     ויאמר  לו  יהוה 
שלום  לך  אל־תירא
לא  תמות׃
    VY'aMUr LV YHVH ShLVM LK 'aL-ThYUr'a L'a ThMVTh.     And Jehovah saith to him, `Peace to thee; fear not; thou dost not die.`     dixitque ei Dominus pax tecum ne timeas non morieris
 
24.    Then Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh, and called it "Yahweh is Peace{or, Yahweh Shalom}." To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.     Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.     ויבן  שם  גדעון 
מזבח  ליהוה
ויקרא־לו  יהוה
שלום  עד  היום  הזה
עודנו  בעפרת  אבי
העזרי׃
    VYBN ShM GD'yVN MZBCh LYHVH VYQUr'a-LV YHVH ShLVM 'yD HYVM HZH 'yVDNV B'yPhUrTh 'aBY H'yZUrY.     And Gideon buildeth there an altar to Jehovah, and calleth it Jehovah-Shalom, unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrites.     aedificavit ergo ibi Gedeon altare Domino vocavitque illud Domini pax usque in praesentem diem cum adhuc esset in Ephra quae est familiae Ezri
 
25.    It happened the same night, that Yahweh said to him, "Take your father's bull, even the second bull seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;     And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father's young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:     ויהי  בלילה  ההוא 
ויאמר  לו  יהוה  קח
את־פר־השור  אשר
לאביך  ופר  השני
שבע  שנים  והרסת
את־מזבח  הבעל  אשר
לאביך  ואת־האשרה
אשר־עליו  תכרת׃
    VYHY BLYLH HHV'a VY'aMUr LV YHVH QCh 'aTh-PhUr-HShVUr 'aShUr L'aBYK VPhUr HShNY ShB'y ShNYM VHUrSTh 'aTh-MZBCh HB'yL 'aShUr L'aBYK V'aTh-H'aShUrH 'aShUr-'yLYV ThKUrTh.     And it cometh to pass, on that night, that Jehovah saith to him, `Take the young ox which is to thy father, and the second bullock of seven years, and thou hast thrown down the altar of Baal which is to thy father, and the shrine which is by it thou dost cut down,     nocte illa dixit Dominus ad eum tolle taurum patris tui et alterum taurum annorum septem destruesque aram Baal quae est patris tui et nemus quod circa aram est succide
 
26.    and build an altar to Yahweh your God on the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bull, and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down."     And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.     ובנית  מזבח  ליהוה 
אלהיך  על  ראש

ולקחת  את־הפר  השני
והעלית  עולה  בעצי
האשרה  אשר  תכרת׃
    VBNYTh MZBCh LYHVH 'aLHYK 'yL Ur'aSh HM'yVZ HZH BM'yUrKH VLQChTh 'aTh-HPhUr HShNY VH'yLYTh 'yVLH B'yTShY H'aShUrH 'aShUr ThKUrTh.     and thou hast built an altar to Jehovah thy God on the top of this stronghold, by the arrangement, and hast taken the second bullock, and caused to ascend a burnt-offering with the wood of the shrine which thou cuttest down.`     et aedificabis altare Domino Deo tuo in summitate petrae huius super quam sacrificium ante posuisti tollesque taurum secundum et offeres holocaustum super lignorum struem quae de nemore succideris
 
27.    Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Yahweh had spoken to him: and it happened, because he feared his father's household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.     Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father's household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.     ויקח  גדעון  עשרה

    VYQCh GD'yVN 'yShUrH 'aNShYM M'yBDYV VY'ySh K'aShUr DBUr 'aLYV YHVH VYHY K'aShUr YUr'a 'aTh-BYTh 'aBYV V'aTh-'aNShY H'yYUr M'yShVTh YVMM VY'ySh LYLH.     And Gideon taketh ten men of his servants, and doth as Jehovah hath spoken unto him, and it cometh to pass, because he hath been afraid of the house of his father, and the men of the city, to do it by day, that he doth it by night.     adsumptis igitur Gedeon decem viris de servis suis fecit sicut praeceperat Dominus timens autem domum patris sui et homines illius civitatis per diem facere noluit sed omnia nocte conplevit
 
28.    When the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bull was offered on the altar that was built.     And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.     וישכימו  אנשי  העיר 
בבקר  והנה  נתץ
מזבח  הבעל  והאשרה
אשר־עליו  כרתה  ואת
הפר  השני  העלה
על־המזבח  הבנוי׃
    VYShKYMV 'aNShY H'yYUr BBQUr VHNH NThTSh MZBCh HB'yL VH'aShUrH 'aShUr-'yLYV KUrThH V'aTh HPhUr HShNY H'yLH 'yL-HMZBCh HBNVY.     And the men of the city rise early in the morning, and lo, broken down hath been the altar of Baal, and the shrine which is by it hath been cut down, and the second bullock hath been offered on the altar which is built.     cumque surrexissent viri oppidi eius mane viderunt destructam aram Baal lucumque succisum et taurum alterum inpositum super altare quod tunc aedificatum erat
 
29.    They said one to another, "Who has done this thing?" When they inquired and asked, they said, "Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing."     And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.     ויאמרו  איש 
אל־רעהו  מי  עשה
הדבר  הזה  וידרשו
ויבקשו  ויאמרו
גדעון  בן־יואש  עשה
הדבר  הזה׃
    VY'aMUrV 'aYSh 'aL-Ur'yHV MY 'yShH HDBUr HZH VYDUrShV VYBQShV VY'aMUrV GD'yVN BN-YV'aSh 'yShH HDBUr HZH.     And they say one to another, `Who hath done this thing?` and they inquire and seek, and they say, `Gideon son of Joash hath done this thing.`     dixeruntque ad invicem quis hoc fecit cumque perquirerent auctorem facti dictum est Gedeon filius Ioas fecit haec omnia
 
30.    Then the men of the city said to Joash, "Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it."     Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.     ויאמרו  אנשי  העיר 
אל־יואש  הוצא
את־בנך  וימת  כי
נתץ  את־מזבח  הבעל
וכי  כרת  האשרה
אשר־עליו׃
    VY'aMUrV 'aNShY H'yYUr 'aL-YV'aSh HVTSh'a 'aTh-BNK VYMTh KY NThTSh 'aTh-MZBCh HB'yL VKY KUrTh H'aShUrH 'aShUr-'yLYV.     And the men of the city say unto Joash, `Bring out thy son, and he dieth, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the shrine which is by it.`     et dixerunt ad Ioas produc filium tuum ut moriatur quia destruxit aram Baal et succidit nemus
 
31.    Joash said to all who stood against him, "Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for him, let him be put to death while [it is yet] morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar."     And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.     ויאמר  יואש  לכל 
אשר־עמדו  עליו
האתם  תריבון  לבעל
אם־אתם  תושיעון
אותו  אשר  יריב  לו
יומת  עד־הבקר
אם־אלהים  הוא  ירב
לו  כי  נתץ  את־
מזבחו׃
    VY'aMUr YV'aSh LKL 'aShUr-'yMDV 'yLYV H'aThM ThUrYBVN LB'yL 'aM-'aThM ThVShY'yVN 'aVThV 'aShUr YUrYB LV YVMTh 'yD-HBQUr 'aM-'aLHYM HV'a YUrB LV KY NThTSh 'aTh- MZBChV.     And Joash saith to all who have stood against him, `Ye, do ye plead for Baal? ye -- do ye save him? he who pleadeth for him is put to death during the morning; if he is a god he himself doth plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.`     quibus ille respondit numquid ultores estis Baal et pugnatis pro eo qui adversarius eius est moriatur antequam lux crastina veniat si deus est vindicet se de eo qui suffodit aram eius
 
32.    Therefore on that day he named him Jerub-Baal,{"Jerub-Baal" means "Let Baal contend."} saying, "Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar."     Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.     ויקרא־לו 
ביום־ההוא  ירבעל
לאמר  ירב  בו  הבעל
כי  נתץ  את־מזבחו׃
    VYQUr'a-LV BYVM-HHV'a YUrB'yL L'aMUr YUrB BV HB'yL KY NThTSh 'aTh-MZBChV.     And he calleth him, on that day, Jerubbaal, saying, `The Baal doth plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.`     ex illo die vocatus est Gedeon Hierobbaal eo quod dixisset Ioas ulciscatur se de eo Baal qui suffodit altare eius
 
33.    Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.     Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.     וכל־מדין  ועמלק 
ובני־קדם  נאספו
יחדו  ויעברו  ויחנו
בעמק  יזרעאל׃
    VKL-MDYN V'yMLQ VBNY-QDM N'aSPhV YChDV VY'yBUrV VYChNV B'yMQ YZUr'y'aL.     And all Midian and Amalek and the sons of the east have been gathered together, and pass over, and encamp in the valley of Jezreel,     igitur omnis Madian et Amalech et orientales populi congregati sunt simul et transeuntes Iordanem castrametati sunt in valle Iezrahel
 
34.    But the Spirit of Yahweh came on Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.     But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.     ורוח  יהוה  לבשה 
את־גדעון  ויתקע
בשופר  ויזעק
אביעזר  אחריו׃
    VUrVCh YHVH LBShH 'aTh-GD'yVN VYThQ'y BShVPhUr VYZ'yQ 'aBY'yZUr 'aChUrYV.     and the Spirit of Jehovah hath clothed Gideon, and he bloweth with a trumpet, and Abi-Ezer is called after him;     spiritus autem Domini induit Gedeon qui clangens bucina convocavit domum Abiezer ut sequeretur
 
35.    He sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers to Asher, and to Zebulun, and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.     And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.     ומלאכים  שלח 
בכל־מנשה  ויזעק
גם־הוא  אחריו

ויעלו  לקראתם׃
    VML'aKYM ShLCh BKL-MNShH VYZ'yQ GM-HV'a 'aChUrYV VML'aKYM ShLCh B'aShUr VBZBLVN VBNPhThLY VY'yLV LQUr'aThM.     and messengers he hath sent into all Manasseh, and it also is called after him; and messengers he hath sent into Asher, and into Zebulun, and into Naphtali, and they come up to meet them.     misitque nuntios in universum Manassen qui et ipse secutus est eum et alios nuntios in Aser et Zabulon et Nepthalim qui occurrerunt ei
 
36.    Gideon said to God, "If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken,     And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,     ויאמר  גדעון 
אל־האלהים  אם־ישך
מושיע  בידי
את־ישראל  כאשר
דברת׃
    VY'aMUr GD'yVN 'aL-H'aLHYM 'aM-YShK MVShY'y BYDY 'aTh-YShUr'aL K'aShUr DBUrTh.     And Gideon saith unto God, `If Thou art Saviour of Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken,     dixitque Gedeon ad Dominum si salvum facis per manum meam Israhel sicut locutus es
 
37.    behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry on all the ground, then shall I know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken."     Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.     הנה  אנכי  מציג 
את־גזת  הצמר  בגרן
אם  טל  יהיה
על־הגזה  לבדה  ועל־
כל־הארץ  חרב
וידעתי  כי־תושיע
בידי  את־ישראל
כאשר  דברת׃
    HNH 'aNKY MTShYG 'aTh-GZTh HTShMUr BGUrN 'aM TL YHYH 'yL-HGZH LBDH V'yL- KL-H'aUrTSh ChUrB VYD'yThY KY-ThVShY'y BYDY 'aTh-YShUr'aL K'aShUr DBUrTh.     lo, I am placing the fleece of wool in the threshing-floor: if dew is on the fleece alone, and on all the earth drought -- then I have known that Thou dost save Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken;`     ponam vellus hoc lanae in area si ros in solo vellere fuerit et in omni terra siccitas sciam quod per manum meam sicut locutus es liberabis Israhel
 
38.    It was so; for he rose up early on the next day, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.     And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.     ויהי־כן  וישכם 
ממחרת  ויזר
את־הגזה  וימץ  טל
מן־הגזה  מלוא  הספל
מים׃
    VYHY-KN VYShKM MMChUrTh VYZUr 'aTh-HGZH VYMTSh TL MN-HGZH MLV'a HSPhL MYM.     and it is so, and he riseth early on the morrow, and presseth the fleece, and wringeth dew out of the fleece -- the fulness of the bowl, of water.     factumque est ita et de nocte consurgens expresso vellere concam rore conplevit
 
39.    Gideon said to God, "Don't let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Please let me make a trial just this once with the fleece. Let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew."     And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.     ויאמר  גדעון 
אל־האלהים  אל־יחר
אפך  בי  ואדברה  אך
הפעם  אנסה  נא־
רק־הפעם  בגזה
יהי־נא  חרב
אל־הגזה  לבדה
ועל־כל־הארץ
יהיה־טל׃
    VY'aMUr GD'yVN 'aL-H'aLHYM 'aL-YChUr 'aPhK BY V'aDBUrH 'aK HPh'yM 'aNSH N'a- UrQ-HPh'yM BGZH YHY-N'a ChUrB 'aL-HGZH LBDH V'yL-KL-H'aUrTSh YHYH-TL.     And Gideon saith unto God, `Let not Thine anger burn against me, and I speak only this time; let me try, I pray Thee, only this time with the fleece -- let there be, I pray Thee, drought on the fleece alone, and on all the earth let there be dew.`     dixitque rursus ad Dominum ne irascatur furor tuus contra me si adhuc semel temptavero signum quaerens in vellere oro ut solum vellus siccum sit et omnis terra rore madens
 
40.    God did so that night: for it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.     And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.     ויעש  אלהים  כן

    VY'ySh 'aLHYM KN BLYLH HHV'a VYHY-ChUrB 'aL-HGZH LBDH V'yL-KL-H'aUrTSh HYH TL.     And God doth so on that night, and there is drought on the fleece alone, and on all the earth there hath been dew.     fecitque Dominus nocte illa ut postulaverat et fuit siccitas in solo vellere et ros in omni terra
