By the Sun and his (glorious) splendour;
|
|
CONSIDER the sun and its radiant brightness,
|
|
And/by the sun and its sunrise/day light.
|
|
swr+ al$ms bsm allh alrHmn alrHym ? wal$ms wDHaha
|
|
2. * |
By the Moon as she follows him;
|
|
and the moon as it reflects the sun! *
|
|
And/by the moon when/if it followed it.
|
|
walqmr aXa tlaha
|
|
3. * |
By the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory;
|
|
Consider the day as it reveals the world, *
|
|
And/by the daytime when/if it shined/revealed it.
|
|
walnhar aXa jlaha
|
|
4. * |
By the Night as it conceals it;
|
|
and the night as it veils it darkly!
|
|
And/by the night when/if it covers/darkens it.
|
|
wallyl aXa yG$aha
|
|
5. * |
By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure;
|
|
Consider the sky and its wondrous make, *
|
|
And/by the sky/space and who built/constructed it.
|
|
walsma' wmabnaha
|
|
6. * |
By the Earth and its (wide) expanse:
|
|
and the earth and all its expanse!
|
|
And/by the earth/Planet Earth and who spread and extended it.
|
|
walarD wmaTHaha
|
|
7. * |
By the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it;
|
|
Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, *
|
|
And/by a self and who straightened it.
|
|
wnfs wmaswaha
|
|
8. * |
And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;-
|
|
and how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God! *
|
|
So He inspired/transmitted (to) it its debauchery/corruption, and its fear and obedience of God.
|
|
falhmha fjwrha wtqwaha
|
|
9. * |
Truly he succeeds that purifies it,
|
|
To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity,
|
|
Who purified/corrected it had succeeded/won.
|
|
qd aflH mn zkaha
|
|
10. * |
And he fails that corrupts it!
|
|
and truly lost is he who buries it [in darkness].
|
|
And who buried it/plotted against it (corrupted it) had failed/despaired.
|
|
wqd Kab mn dsaha
|
|
11. * |
The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing,
|
|
TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, *
|
|
Thamud had lied/denied/falsified with its own tyranny/excess of the limit.
|
|

|
12. * |
Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety).
|
|
when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed],
|
|
When/if its most miserable/unhappy stirred up/urged.
|
|
aX anb`x a$qaha
|
|
13. * |
But the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah. And (bar her not from) having her drink!"
|
|
although God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!" *
|
|
So God's messenger said to them: "God's female camel, and its drink/drinking (water)."
|
|

|
14. * |
Then they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal (in destruction, high and low)!
|
|
But they gave him the lie, and cruelly slaughtered her * - whereupon their Sustainer visited them wwith utter destruction for this their sin, destroying them all alike:
|
|
So they denied him, so they wounded it/slaughtered it/made it infertile, so their Lord became angry/destroyed on them because of their crime, so He straightened it.

|
|
15. * |
And for Him is no fear of its consequences.
|
|
for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. *
|
|
And He does not fear its end/turn (result).
|
|

|
