1.    τοτε ο ιησους ελαλησεν τοις οχλοις και τοις μαθηταις αυτου     Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,     Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,     Then Jesus said to the people and to his disciples:
 
2.    λεγων επι της μωυσεωσ καθεδρας εκαθισαν οι γραμματεις και οι φαρισαιοι     Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:     saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses' seat.     The scribes and the Pharisees have the authority of Moses;
 
3.    παντα ουν οσα εαν ειπωσιν υμιν ποιησατε και τηρειτε  κατα δε τα εργα αυτων μη ποιειτε λεγουσιν γαρ και ου ποιουσιν     All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.     All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don't do their works; for they say, and don't do.     All things, then, which they give you orders to do, these do and keep: but do not take their works as your example, for they say and do not.
 
4.    δεσμευουσιν δε φορτια βαρεα [και δυσβαστακτα] και επιτιθεασιν επι τους ωμους των ανθρωπων αυτοι δε τω δακτυλω αυτων ου θελουσιν κινησαι αυτα     For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.     For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.     They make hard laws and put great weights on men's backs; but they themselves will not put a finger to them.
 
5.    παντα δε τα εργα αυτων ποιουσιν προς το θεαθηναι τοις ανθρωποις πλατυνουσιν γαρ τα φυλακτηρια αυτων και μεγαλυνουσιν τα κρασπεδα      But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,     But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries{phylacteries (tefillin in Hebrew) are small leather pouches that some Jewish men wear on their forehead and arm in prayer. They are used to carry a small scroll with some Scripture in it. See Deuteronomy 6:8.} broad, enlarge the fringes{or, tassels} of their garments,     But all their works they do so as to be seen by men: for they make wide their phylacteries, and the edges of their robes,
 
6.    φιλουσιν δε την πρωτοκλισιαν εν τοις δειπνοις και τας πρωτοκαθεδριας εν ταις συναγωγαις     And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,     and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,     And the things desired by them are the first places at feasts, and the chief seats in the Synagogues,
 
7.    και τους ασπασμους εν ταις αγοραις και καλεισθαι υπο των ανθρωπων ραββι     And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.     the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called 'Rabbi, Rabbi' by men.     And words of respect in the market-places, and to be named by men, Teacher.
 
8.    υμεις δε μη κληθητε ραββι εις γαρ εστιν υμων ο διδασκαλοσ  παντες δε υμεις αδελφοι εστε     But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.     But don't you be called 'Rabbi,' for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.     But you may not be named Teacher: for one is your teacher, and you are all brothers.
 
9.    και πατερα μη καλεσητε υμων επι της γης εις γαρ εστιν  υμων ο πατηρ ο ουρανιοσ     And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.     Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.     And give no man the name of father on earth: because one is your Father, who is in heaven.
 
10.    μηδε κληθητε καθηγηται οτι καθηγητησ υμων εστιν εισ  ο χριστος     Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.     Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ.     And you may not be named guides: because one is your Guide, even Christ.
 
11.    ο δε μειζων υμων εσται υμων διακονος     But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.     But he who is greatest among you will be your servant.     But let the greatest among you be your servant.
 
12.    οστις δε υψωσει εαυτον ταπεινωθησεται και οστις ταπεινωσει εαυτον υψωθησεται     And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.     Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.     And whoever makes himself high will be made low, and whoever makes himself low will be made high.
 
13.    ουαι δε υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι κλειετε την βασιλειαν των ουρανων εμπροσθεν των ανθρωπων υμεις γαρ ουκ εισερχεσθε ουδε τους εισερχομενους αφιετε εισελθειν     But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.     "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows' houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.     But a curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! because you are shutting the kingdom of heaven against men: for you do not go in yourselves, and those who are going in, you keep back.
 
14.        Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.     "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don't enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter.{Some Greek manuscripts reverse the order of verses 13 and 14, and some omit verse 13, numbering verse 14 as 13.}     \\
 
15.    ουαι υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι περιαγετε την θαλασσαν και την ξηραν ποιησαι ενα προσηλυτον και οταν γενηται ποιειτε αυτον υιον γεεννης διπλοτερον υμων     Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.     Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much of a son of Gehenna{or, Hell} as yourselves.     A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you go about land and sea to get one disciple and, having him, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
 
16.    ουαι υμιν οδηγοι τυφλοι οι λεγοντες ος αν ομοση εν τω ναω ουδεν εστιν ος δ αν ομοση εν τω χρυσω του ναου οφειλει     Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!     "Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.'     A curse is on you, blind guides, who say, Whoever takes an oath by the Temple, it is nothing; but whoever takes an oath by the gold of the Temple, he is responsible.
 
17.    μωροι και τυφλοι τις γαρ μειζων εστιν ο χρυσος η ο ναος ο αγιασασ τον χρυσον     Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?     You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?     You foolish ones and blind: which is greater, the gold, or the Temple which makes the gold holy?
 
18.    και ος αν ομοση εν τω θυσιαστηριω ουδεν εστιν ος δ αν ομοση εν τω δωρω τω επανω αυτου οφειλει     And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.     'Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?'     And, Whoever takes an oath by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever takes an oath by the offering which is on it, he is responsible.
 
19.    τυφλοι τι γαρ μειζον το δωρον η το θυσιαστηριον το αγιαζον το δωρον     Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?     You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?     You blind ones: which is greater, the offering, or the altar which makes the offering holy?
 
20.    ο ουν ομοσας εν τω θυσιαστηριω ομνυει εν αυτω και εν πασι τοις επανω αυτου     Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.     He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it.     He, then, who takes an oath by the altar, takes it by the altar and by all things on it.
 
21.    και ο ομοσας εν τω ναω ομνυει εν αυτω και εν τω κατοικουντι αυτον     And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.     He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who was living in it.     And he who takes an oath by the Temple, takes it by the Temple and by him whose house it is.
 
22.    και ο ομοσας εν τω ουρανω ομνυει εν τω θρονω του θεου και εν τω καθημενω επανω αυτου     And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.     He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.     And he who takes an oath by heaven, takes it by the seat of God, and by him who is seated on it.
 
23.    ουαι υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι αποδεκατουτε το ηδυοσμον και το ανηθον και το κυμινον και αφηκατε τα βαρυτερα του νομου την κρισιν και το ελεοσ και την πιστιν ταυτα [δε] εδει ποιησαι κακεινα μη αφιεναι     Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.     "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin,{ cumin is an aromatic seed from Cuminum cyminum, resembling caraway in flavor and appearance. It is used as a spice.} and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.     A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you make men give a tenth of all sorts of sweet-smelling plants, but you give no thought to the more important things of the law, righteousness, and mercy, and faith; but it is right for you to do these, and not to let the others be undone.
 
24.    οδηγοι τυφλοι οι διυλιζοντες τον κωνωπα την δε καμηλον καταπινοντες     Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.     You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!     You blind guides, who take out a fly from your drink, but make no trouble over a camel.
 
25.    ουαι υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι καθαριζετε το εξωθεν του ποτηριου και της παροψιδος εσωθεν δε γεμουσιν εξ αρπαγης και ακρασιασ     Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.     "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness.{TR reads "self-indulgence" instead of "unrighteousness"}     A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you make clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of violent behaviour and uncontrolled desire.
 
26.    φαρισαιε τυφλε καθαρισον πρωτον το εντος του ποτηριου  ινα γενηται και το εκτος αυτου καθαρον     Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.     You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.     You blind Pharisee, first make clean the inside of the cup and of the plate, so that the outside may become equally clean.
 
27.    ουαι υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι παρομοιαζετε ταφοις κεκονιαμενοις οιτινες εξωθεν μεν φαινονται ωραιοι εσωθεν δε γεμουσιν οστεων νεκρων και πασης ακαθαρσιας     Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.     "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.     A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you are like the resting-places of the dead, which are made white, and seem beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men's bones and of all unclean things.
 
28.    ουτως και υμεις εξωθεν μεν φαινεσθε τοις ανθρωποις δικαιοι εσωθεν δε εστε μεστοι υποκρισεως και ανομιας     Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.     Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.     Even so you seem to men to be full of righteousness, but inside you are all false and full of wrongdoing.
 
29.    ουαι υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι οικοδομειτε τους ταφους των προφητων και κοσμειτε τα μνημεια των δικαιων     Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,     "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the righteous,     A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! because you put up buildings for housing the dead bodies of the prophets, and make fair the last resting-places of good men, and say,
 
30.    και λεγετε ει ημεθα εν ταις ημεραις των πατερων ημων ουκ αν ημεθα  αυτων κοινωνοι εν τω αιματι των προφητων     And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.     and say, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn't have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.'     If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in the blood of the prophets.
 
31.    ωστε μαρτυρειτε εαυτοις οτι υιοι εστε των φονευσαντων τους προφητας     Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.     Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets.     So that you are witnesses against yourselves that you are the sons of those who put the prophets to death.
 
32.    και υμεις πληρωσατε το μετρον των πατερων υμων     Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.     Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.     Make full, then, the measure of your fathers.
 
33.    οφεις γεννηματα εχιδνων πως φυγητε απο της κρισεως της γεεννης     Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?     You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna{or, Hell}?     You snakes, offspring of snakes, how will you be kept from the punishment of hell?
 
34.    δια τουτο ιδου εγω αποστελλω προς υμας προφητας και σοφους και γραμματεις εξ αυτων αποκτενειτε και σταυρωσετε και εξ αυτων μαστιγωσετε εν ταις συναγωγαις υμων και διωξετε απο πολεως εις πολιν     Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:     Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city;     For this reason, I send you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them you will put to death and put on the cross, and to some of them you will give blows in your Synagogues, driving them from town to town;
 
35.    οπως ελθη εφ υμας παν αιμα δικαιον εκχυννομενον επι της γης απο του αιματος αβελ του δικαιου εως του αιματος ζαχαριου υιου βαραχιου ον εφονευσατε μεταξυ του ναου και του θυσιαστηριου     That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.     that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar.     So that on you may come all the blood of the upright on the earth, from the blood of upright Abel to the blood of Zachariah, son of Barachiah, whom you put to death between the Temple and the altar.
 
36.    αμην λεγω υμιν ηξει ταυτα παντα επι την γενεαν ταυτην     Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.     Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.     Truly I say to you, All these things will come on this generation.
 
37.    ιερουσαλημ ιερουσαλημ η αποκτεινουσα τους προφητας και λιθοβολουσα τους απεσταλμενους προς αυτην ποσακις ηθελησα επισυναγαγειν τα τεκνα σου ον τροπον ορνις επισυναγει τα νοσσια αυτησ υπο τας πτερυγας και ουκ ηθελησατε     O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!     "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!     O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, putting to death the prophets, and stoning those who are sent to her! Again and again would I have taken your children to myself as a bird takes her young ones under her wings, and you would not!
 
38.    ιδου αφιεται υμιν ο οικος υμων ερημος     Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.     Behold, your house is left to you desolate.     See, your house is made waste.
 
39.    λεγω γαρ υμιν ου μη με ιδητε απ αρτι εως αν ειπητε ευλογημενος ο ερχομενος εν ονοματι κυριου     For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.     For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'"{Psalm 118:26}     For I say to you, You will not see me from this time till you say, A blessing on him who comes in the name of the Lord.
