תפלה לעני כי־יעטף ולפני יהוה ישפך שיחו׃ |
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come unto thee. | {A Prayer of the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed and pours out his complaint before Yahweh.} Hear my prayer, Yahweh! Let my cry come to you. | A Prayer of the man who is in trouble, when he is overcome, and puts his grief before the Lord. | |||

יהוה שמעה תפלתי ושועתי אליך תבוא׃ |
Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily. | Don't hide your face from me in the day of my distress. Turn your ear to me. Answer me quickly in the day when I call. | Give ear to my prayer, O Lord, and let my cry come to you. | |||

אל־תסתר פניך ממני ביום צר לי הטה־אלי אזנך ביום אקרא מהר ענני׃ |
For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth. | For my days consume away like smoke. My bones are burned as a torch. | Let not your face be veiled from me in the day of my trouble; give ear to me, and let my cry be answered quickly. | |||

כי־כלו בעשן ימי ועצמותי כמו־קד נחרו׃ |
My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread. | My heart is blighted like grass, and withered, for I forget to eat my bread. | My days are wasted like smoke, and my bones are burned up as in a fire. | |||

הוכה־כעשב ויבש לבי כי־שכחתי מאכל לחמי׃ |
By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my skin. | By reason of the voice of my groaning, my bones stick to my skin. | My heart is broken; it has become dry and dead like grass, so that I give no thought to food. | |||

מקול אנחתי דבקה עצמי לבשרי׃ |
I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert. | I am like a pelican of the wilderness. I have become as an owl of the waste places. | Because of the voice of my sorrow, my flesh is wasted to the bone. | |||

דמיתי לקאת מדבר הייתי ככוס חרבות׃ |
I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top. | I watch, and have become like a sparrow that is alone on the housetop. | I am like a bird living by itself in the waste places; like the night-bird in a waste of sand. | |||
| 8. |
שקדתי ואהיה כצפור בודד על־גג׃ |
Mine enemies reproach me all the day; and they that are mad against me are sworn against me. | My enemies reproach me all day. Those who are mad at me use my name as a curse. | I keep watch like a bird by itself on the house-top. | |||

כל־היום חרפוני אויבי מהוללי בי נשבעו׃ |
For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping, | For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mixed my drink with tears, | My haters say evil of me all day; those who are violent against me make use of my name as a curse. | |||

כי־אפר כלחם אכלתי ושקוי בבכי מסכתי׃ |
Because of thine indignation and thy wrath: for thou hast lifted me up, and cast me down. | Because of your indignation and your wrath, for you have taken me up, and thrown me away. | I have had dust for bread and my drink has been mixed with weeping: | |||

מפני־זעמך וקצפך כי נשאתני ותשליכני׃ |
My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass. | My days are like a long shadow. I have withered like grass. | Because of your passion and your wrath, for I have been lifted up and then made low by you. | |||

ימי כצל נטוי ואני כעשב איבש׃ |
But thou, O LORD, shalt endure for ever; and thy remembrance unto all generations. | But you, Yahweh, will abide forever; your renown endures to all generations. | My days are like a shade which is stretched out; I am dry like the grass. | |||
| 13. |
ואתה יהוה לעולם תשב וזכרך לדר ודר׃ |
Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come. | You will arise and have mercy on Zion; for it is time to have pity on her. Yes, the set time has come. | But you, O Lord, are eternal; and your name will never come to an end. | |||

אתה תקום תרחם ציון כי־עת לחננה כי־בא מועד׃ |
For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof. | For your servants take pleasure in her stones, and have pity on her dust. | You will again get up and have mercy on Zion: for the time has come for her to be comforted. | |||

כי־רצו עבדיך את־אבניה ואת־עפרה יחננו׃ |
So the heathen shall fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth thy glory. | So the nations will fear the name of Yahweh; all the kings of the earth your glory. | For your servants take pleasure in her stones, looking with love on her dust. | |||

וייראו גוים את־שם יהוה וכל־מלכי הארץ את־כבודך׃ |
When the LORD shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory. | For Yahweh has built up Zion. He has appeared in his glory. | So the nations will give honour to the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth will be in fear of his glory: | |||

כי־בנה יהוה ציון נראה בכבודו׃ |
He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer. | He has responded to the prayer of the destitute, and has not despised their prayer. | When the Lord has put up the walls of Zion, and has been been in his glory; | |||
| 18. |
פנה אל־תפלת הערער ולא־בזה את־תפלתם׃ |
This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD. | This will be written for the generation to come. A people which will be created will praise Yah. | When he has given ear to the prayer of the poor, and has not put his request on one side. | |||

תכתב זאת לדור אחרון ועם נברא יהלל־יה׃ |
For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the LORD behold the earth; | For he has looked down from the height of his sanctuary. From heaven, Yahweh saw the earth; | This will be put in writing for the coming generation, and the people of the future will give praise to the Lord. | |||

כי־השקיף ממרום קדשו יהוה משמים אל־ארץ הביט׃ |
To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death; | to hear the groans of the prisoner; to free those who are condemned to death; | For from his holy place the Lord has seen, looking down on the earth from heaven; | |||

לשמע אנקת אסיר לפתח בני תמותה׃ |
To declare the name of the LORD in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem; | that men may declare the name of Yahweh in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem; | Hearing the cry of the prisoner, making free those for whom death is ordered; | |||

לספר בציון שם יהוה ותהלתו בירושלם׃ |
When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD. | when the peoples are gathered together, the kingdoms, to serve Yahweh. | So that they may give out the name of the Lord in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem; | |||

בהקבץ עמים יחדו וממלכות לעבד את־יהוה׃ |
He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days. | He weakened my strength along the course. He shortened my days. | When the peoples are come together, and the kingdoms, to give worship to the Lord. | |||

ענה בדרך כחו קצר ימי׃ |
I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations. | I said, "My God, don't take me away in the midst of my days. Your years are throughout all generations. | He has taken my strength from me in the way; he has made short my days. | |||
| 25. |
אמר אלי אל־תעלני בחצי ימי בדור דורים שנותיך׃ |
Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. | Of old, you laid the foundation of the earth. The heavens are the work of your hands. | I will say, O my God, take me not away before my time; your years go on through all generations: | |||

לפנים הארץ יסדת ומעשה ידיך שמים׃ |
They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: | They will perish, but you will endure. Yes, all of them will wear out like a garment. You will change them like a cloak, and they will be changed. | In the past you put the earth on its base, and the heavens are the work of your hands. | |||

המה יאבדו ואתה תעמד וכלם כבגד יבלו כלבוש תחליפם ויחלפו׃ |
But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. | But you are the same. Your years will have no end. | They will come to an end, but you will still go on; they all will become old like a coat, and like a robe they will be changed: | |||

ואתה־הוא ושנותיך לא יתמו׃ |
The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee. | The children of your servants will continue. Their seed will be established before you." | But you are the unchanging One, and your years will have no end. | |||

בני־עבדיך ישכונו וזרעם לפניך יכון׃ |
