1.    It happened, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out [to battle], that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. And David is dwelling in Jerusalem,     factum est ergo vertente anno eo tempore quo solent reges ad bella procedere misit David Ioab et servos suos cum eo et universum Israhel et vastaverunt filios Ammon et obsederunt Rabba David autem remansit in Hierusalem
 
2.    It happened at evening, that David arose from off his bed, and walked on the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look on.     And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.     ויהי  לעת  הערב

3.    David send and inquired after the woman. One said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?"     And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?     וישלח  דוד  וידרש

5.    The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, "I am with child."     And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.     ותהר  האשה  ותשלח

6.    David sent to Joab, [saying], "Send me Uriah the Hittite." Joab sent Uriah to David.     And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.     וישלח  דוד  אל־יואב

7.    When Uriah was come to him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.     And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered.     ויבא  אוריה  אליו

8.    David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house, and wash your feet." Uriah departed out of the king's house, and a gift from the king was sent after him.     And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king.     ויאמר  דוד  לאוריה

10.    When they had told David, saying, "Uriah didn't go down to his house," David said to Uriah, "Haven't you come from a journey? Why didn't you go down to your house?"     And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house?     ויגדו  לדוד  לאמר

11.    Uriah said to David, "The ark, Israel, and Judah, are staying in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing!"     And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.     ויאמר  אוריה 
אל־דוד  הארון
וישראל  ויהודה
ישבים  בסכות  ואדני
יואב  ועבדי  אדני
על־פני  השדה  חנים
ואני  אבוא  אל־ביתי
לאכל  ולשתות  ולשכב

    VY'aMUr 'aVUrYH 'aL-DVD H'aUrVN VYShUr'aL VYHVDH YShBYM BSKVTh V'aDNY YV'aB V'yBDY 'aDNY 'yL-PhNY HShDH ChNYM V'aNY 'aBV'a 'aL-BYThY L'aKL VLShThVTh VLShKB 'yM-'aShThY ChYK VChY NPhShK 'aM-'a'yShH 'aTh-HDBUr HZH.     And Uriah saith unto David, `The ark, and Israel, and Judah, are abiding in booths, and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, on the face of the field are encamping; and I -- I go in unto my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife! -- thy life, and the life of thy soul -- if I do this thing.`     et ait Urias ad David arca et Israhel et Iuda habitant in papilionibus et dominus meus Ioab et servi domini mei super faciem terrae manent et ego ingrediar domum meam ut comedam et bibam et dormiam cum uxore mea per salutem tuam et per salutem animae tuae quod non faciam rem hanc
 
12.    David said to Uriah, "Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart." So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day, and the next day.     And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.     ויאמר  דוד 
אל־אוריה  שב  בזה
גם־היום  ומחר
אשלחך  וישב  אוריה
בירושלם  ביום  ההוא
וממחרת׃
    VY'aMUr DVD 'aL-'aVUrYH ShB BZH GM-HYVM VMChUr 'aShLChK VYShB 'aVUrYH BYUrVShLM BYVM HHV'a VMMChUrTh.     And David saith unto Uriah, `Abide in this place also to-day, and to-morrow I send thee away;` and Uriah abideth in Jerusalem, on that day, and on the morrow,     ait ergo David ad Uriam mane hic etiam hodie et cras dimittam te mansit Urias in Hierusalem die illa et altera
 
13.    When David had called him, he ate and drink before him; and he made him drunk. At evening, he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but didn't go down to his house.     And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.     ויקרא־לו  דוד 
ויאכל  לפניו  וישת
וישכרהו  ויצא  בערב
לשכב  במשכבו
עם־עבדי  אדניו
ואל־ביתו  לא  ירד׃
    VYQUr'a-LV DVD VY'aKL LPhNYV VYShTh VYShKUrHV VYTSh'a B'yUrB LShKB BMShKBV 'yM-'yBDY 'aDNYV V'aL-BYThV L'a YUrD.     and David calleth for him, and he eateth before him, and drinketh, and he causeth him to drink, and he goeth out in the evening to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, and unto his house he hath not gone down.     et vocavit eum David ut comederet coram se et biberet et inebriavit eum qui egressus vespere dormivit in stratu suo cum servis domini sui et in domum suam non descendit
 
14.    It happened in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.     And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.     ויהי  בבקר  ויכתב 
דוד  ספר  אל־יואב
וישלח  ביד  אוריה׃
    VYHY BBQUr VYKThB DVD SPhUr 'aL-YV'aB VYShLCh BYD 'aVUrYH.     And it cometh to pass in the morning, that David writeth a letter unto Joab, and sendeth by the hand of Uriah;     factum est ergo mane et scripsit David epistulam ad Ioab misitque per manum Uriae
 
15.    He wrote in the letter, saying, "Send Uriah to the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck, and die."     And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.     ויכתב  בספר  לאמר 
הבו  את־אוריה
אל־מול  פני  המלחמה
החזקה  ושבתם
מאחריו  ונכה  ומת׃
    VYKThB BSPhUr L'aMUr HBV 'aTh-'aVUrYH 'aL-MVL PhNY HMLChMH HChZQH VShBThM M'aChUrYV VNKH VMTh.     and he writeth in the letter, saying, `Place ye Uriah over-against the front of the severest battle, and ye have turned back from after him, and he hath been smitten, and hath died.`     scribens in epistula ponite Uriam ex adverso belli ubi fortissimum proelium est et derelinquite eum ut percussus intereat
 
16.    It happened, when Joab kept watch on the city, that he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew that valiant men were.     And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were.     ויהי  בשמור  יואב 
אל־העיר  ויתן
את־אוריה  אל־המקום
אשר  ידע  כי
אנשי־חיל  שם׃
    VYHY BShMVUr YV'aB 'aL-H'yYUr VYThN 'aTh-'aVUrYH 'aL-HMQVM 'aShUr YD'y KY 'aNShY-ChYL ShM.     And it cometh to pass in Joab`s watching of the city, that he appointeth Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men are;     igitur cum Ioab obsideret urbem posuit Uriam in loco quo sciebat viros esse fortissimos
 
17.    The men of the city went out, and fought with Joab. Some of the people fell, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.     And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.     ויצאו  אנשי  העיר 
וילחמו  את־יואב
ויפל  מן־העם  מעבדי
דוד  וימת  גם  אוריה

    VYTSh'aV 'aNShY H'yYUr VYLChMV 'aTh-YV'aB VYPhL MN-H'yM M'yBDY DVD VYMTh GM 'aVUrYH HChThY.     and the men of the city go out and fight with Joab, and there fall some of the people, of the servants of David; and there dieth also Uriah the Hittite.     egressique viri de civitate bellabant adversum Ioab et ceciderunt de populo servorum David et mortuus est etiam Urias Hettheus
 
18.    Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;     Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;     וישלח  יואב  ויגד

19.    and he commanded the messenger, saying, "When you have finished telling all the things concerning the war to the king,     And charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling the matters of the war unto the king,     ויצו  את־המלאך 
לאמר  ככלותך  את
כל־דברי  המלחמה
לדבר  אל־המלך׃
    VYTShV 'aTh-HML'aK L'aMUr KKLVThK 'aTh KL-DBUrY HMLChMH LDBUr 'aL-HMLK.     and commandeth the messenger, saying, `At thy finishing all the matters of the war to speak unto the king,     praecepitque nuntio dicens cum conpleveris universos sermones belli ad regem
 
20.    it shall be that, if the king's wrath arise, and he asks you, 'Why did you go so near to the city to fight? Didn't you know that they would shoot from the wall?     And if so be that the king's wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?     והיה  אם־תעלה  חמת 
המלך  ואמר  לך  מדוע
נגשתם  אל־העיר
להלחם  הלוא  ידעתם
את  אשר־ירו  מעל
החומה׃
    VHYH 'aM-Th'yLH ChMTh HMLK V'aMUr LK MDV'y NGShThM 'aL-H'yYUr LHLChM HLV'a YD'yThM 'aTh 'aShUr-YUrV M'yL HChVMH.     then, it hath been, if the king`s fury ascend, and he hath said to thee, Wherefore did ye draw nigh unto the city to fight? did ye not know that they shoot from off the wall?     si eum videris indignari et dixerit quare accessistis ad murum ut proeliaremini an ignorabatis quod multa desuper ex muro tela mittantur
 
21.    who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Didn't a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?' then you shall say, 'Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.'"     Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.     מי־הכה  את־אבימלך

    MY-HKH 'aTh-'aBYMLK BN-YUrBShTh HLV'a-'aShH HShLYKH 'yLYV PhLCh UrKB M'yL HChVMH VYMTh BThBTSh LMH NGShThM 'aL-HChVMH V'aMUrTh GM 'yBDK 'aVUrYH HChThY MTh.     Who smote Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast on him a piece of a rider from the wall, and he dieth in Thebez? why drew ye nigh unto the wall? that thou hast said, Also thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.`     quis percussit Abimelech filium Hieroboseth nonne mulier misit super eum fragmen molae de muro et interfecit eum in Thebes quare iuxta murum accessistis dices etiam servus tuus Urias Hettheus occubuit

23.    The messenger said to David, "The men prevailed against us, and came out to us into the field, and we were on them even to the entrance of the gate.     And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate.     ויאמר  המלאך 
אל־דוד  כי־גברו
עלינו  האנשים
ויצאו  אלינו  השדה
ונהיה  עליהם
עד־פתח  השער׃
    VY'aMUr HML'aK 'aL-DVD KY-GBUrV 'yLYNV H'aNShYM VYTSh'aV 'aLYNV HShDH VNHYH 'yLYHM 'yD-PhThCh HSh'yUr.     and the messenger saith unto David, `Surely the men have been mighty against us, and come out unto us into the field, and we are upon them unto the opening of the gate,     et dixit nuntius ad David praevaluerunt adversum nos viri et egressi sunt ad nos in agrum nos autem facto impetu persecuti eos sumus usque ad portam civitatis
 
24.    The shooters shot at your servants from off the wall; and some of the king's servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also."     And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king's servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.     ויראו  המוראים 
אל־עבדך  מעל  החומה
וימותו  מעבדי  המלך
וגם  עבדך  אוריה
החתי  מת׃
    VYUr'aV HMVUr'aYM 'aL-'yBDK M'yL HChVMH VYMVThV M'yBDY HMLK VGM 'yBDK 'aVUrYH HChThY MTh.     and those shooting shoot at thy servants from off the wall, and some of the servants of the king are dead, and also, thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.     et direxerunt iacula sagittarii ad servos tuos ex muro desuper mortuique sunt de servis regis quin etiam servus tuus Urias Hettheus mortuus est
 
25.    Then David said to the messenger, "Thus you shall tell Joab, 'Don't let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Make your battle stronger against the city, and overthrow it.' Encourage him."     Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.     ויאמר  דוד 
אל־המלאך  כה־תאמר
אל־יואב  אל־ירע
בעיניך  את־הדבר
הזה  כי־כזה  וכזה
תאכל  החרב  החזק
מלחמתך  אל־העיר
והרסה  וחזקהו׃

26.    When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband.     And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.     ותשמע  אשת  אוריה 
כי־מת  אוריה  אישה
ותספד  על־בעלה׃
    VThShM'y 'aShTh 'aVUrYH KY-MTh 'aVUrYH 'aYShH VThSPhD 'yL-B'yLH.     And the wife of Uriah heareth that Uriah her husband is dead, and lamenteth for her lord;     audivit autem uxor Uriae quod mortuus esset Urias vir suus et planxit eum
 
27.    When the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased Yahweh.     And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.     ויעבר  האבל  וישלח 
דוד  ויאספה
