1.    Yahweh sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, "There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.     And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.     וישלח  יהוה  את־נתן

    VYShLCh YHVH 'aTh-NThN 'aL-DVD VYB'a 'aLYV VY'aMUr LV ShNY 'aNShYM HYV B'yYUr 'aChTh 'aChD 'yShYUr V'aChD Ur'aSh.     And Jehovah sendeth Nathan unto David, and he cometh unto him, and saith to him: `Two men have been in one city; One rich and one poor;     misit ergo Dominus Nathan ad David qui cum venisset ad eum dixit ei duo viri erant in civitate una unus dives et alter pauper

3.    but the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up together with him, and with his children. It ate of his own food, drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was to him like a daughter.     But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.     ולרש  אין־כל  כי

    VLUrSh 'aYN-KL KY 'aM-KBShH 'aChTh QTNH 'aShUr QNH VYChYH VThGDL 'yMV V'yM- BNYV YChDV MPhThV Th'aKL VMKSV ThShThH VBChYQV ThShKB VThHY-LV KBTh.     And the poor one hath nothing, Except one little ewe-lamb, Which he hath bought, and keepeth alive, And it groweth up with him, And with his sons together; Of his morsel it eateth, And from his cup it drinketh, And in his bosom it lieth, And it is to him as a daughter;     pauper autem nihil habebat omnino praeter ovem unam parvulam quam emerat et nutrierat et quae creverat apud eum cum filiis eius simul de pane illius comedens et de calice eius bibens et in sinu illius dormiens eratque illi sicut filia
 
4.    A traveler came to the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man who had come to him, but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man who had come to him."     And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.     ויבא  הלך  לאיש

5.    David's anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, "As Yahweh lives, the man who has done this is worthy to die!     And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:     ויחר־אף  דוד  באיש 
מאד  ויאמר  אל־נתן
חי־יהוה  כי  בן־מות
האיש  העשה  זאת׃
    VYChUr-'aPh DVD B'aYSh M'aD VY'aMUr 'aL-NThN ChY-YHVH KY BN-MVTh H'aYSh H'yShH Z'aTh.     And the anger of David burneth against the man exceedingly, and he saith unto Nathan, `Jehovah liveth, surely a son of death is the man who is doing this,     iratus autem indignatione David adversus hominem illum nimis dixit ad Nathan vivit Dominus quoniam filius mortis est vir qui fecit hoc
 
6.    He shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity!"     And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.     ואת־הכבשה  ישלם 
ארבעתים  עקב  אשר
עשה  את־הדבר  הזה
ועל  אשר  לא־  חמל׃
    V'aTh-HKBShH YShLM 'aUrB'yThYM 'yQB 'aShUr 'yShH 'aTh-HDBUr HZH V'yL 'aShUr L'a- ChML.     and the ewe-lamb he doth repay fourfold, because that he hath done this thing, and because that he had no pity.`     ovem reddet in quadruplum eo quod fecerit verbum istud et non pepercerit
 
7.    Nathan said to David, "You are the man. This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.     And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;     ויאמר  נתן  אל־דוד 
אתה  האיש  כה־אמר
יהוה  אלהי  ישראל
אנכי  משחתיך  למלך
על־ישראל  ואנכי
הצלתיך  מיד  שאול׃
    VY'aMUr NThN 'aL-DVD 'aThH H'aYSh KH-'aMUr YHVH 'aLHY YShUr'aL 'aNKY MShChThYK LMLK 'yL-YShUr'aL V'aNKY HTShLThYK MYD Sh'aVL.     And Nathan saith unto David, `Thou art the man! Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I anointed thee for king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;     dixit autem Nathan ad David tu es ille vir haec dicit Dominus Deus Israhel ego unxi te in regem super Israhel et ego erui te de manu Saul
 
8.    I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things.     And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.     ואתנה  לך  את־בית 
אדניך  ואת־נשי
אדניך  בחיקך  ואתנה
לך  את־בית  ישראל
ויהודה  ואם־מעט
ואספה  לך  כהנה
וכהנה׃
    V'aThNH LK 'aTh-BYTh 'aDNYK V'aTh-NShY 'aDNYK BChYQK V'aThNH LK 'aTh-BYTh YShUr'aL VYHVDH V'aM-M'yT V'aSPhH LK KHNH VKHNH.     and I give to thee the house of thy lord, and the wives of thy lord, into thy bosom, and I give to thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if little, then I add to thee such and such things.     et dedi tibi domum domini tui et uxores domini tui in sinu tuo dedique tibi domum Israhel et Iuda et si parva sunt ista adiciam tibi multo maiora
 
9.    Why have you despised the word of Yahweh, to do that which is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.     Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.     מדוע  בזית  את־דבר 
יהוה  לעשות  הרע

החתי  הכית  בחרב

    MDV'y BZYTh 'aTh-DBUr YHVH L'yShVTh HUr'y B'yYNV 'aTh 'aVUrYH HChThY HKYTh BChUrB V'aTh-'aShThV LQChTh LK L'aShH V'aThV HUrGTh BChUrB BNY 'yMVN.     `Wherefore hast thou despised the word of Jehovah, to do the evil thing in His eyes? Uriah the Hittite thou hast smitten by the sword, and his wife thou hast taken to thee for a wife, and him thou hast slain by the sword of the Bene-Ammon.     quare ergo contempsisti verbum Domini ut faceres malum in conspectu meo Uriam Hettheum percussisti gladio et uxorem illius accepisti uxorem et interfecisti eum gladio filiorum Ammon
 
10.    Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.'     Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.     ועתה  לא־תסור  חרב 
מביתך  עד־עולם  עקב
כי  בזתני  ותקח
את־אשת  אוריה  החתי
להיות  לך  לאשה׃
    V'yThH L'a-ThSVUr ChUrB MBYThK 'yD-'yVLM 'yQB KY BZThNY VThQCh 'aTh-'aShTh 'aVUrYH HChThY LHYVTh LK L'aShH.     `And now, the sword doth not turn aside from thy house unto the age, because thou hast despised Me, and dost take the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be to thee for a wife;     quam ob rem non recedet gladius de domo tua usque in sempiternum eo quod despexeris me et tuleris uxorem Uriae Hetthei ut esset uxor tua
 
11.    "This is what Yahweh says: 'Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.     Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.     כה  אמר  יהוה  הנני 
מקים  עליך  רעה
מביתך  ולקחתי
את־נשיך  לעיניך
ונתתי  לרעיך  ושכב
עם־נשיך  לעיני
השמש  הזאת׃
    KH 'aMUr YHVH HNNY MQYM 'yLYK Ur'yH MBYThK VLQChThY 'aTh-NShYK L'yYNYK VNThThY LUr'yYK VShKB 'yM-NShYK L'yYNY HShMSh HZ'aTh.     thus said Jehovah, Lo, I am raising up against thee evil, out of thy house, and have taken thy wives before thine eyes, and given to thy neighbour, and he hath lain with thy wives before the eyes of this sun;     itaque haec dicit Dominus ecce ego suscitabo super te malum de domo tua et tollam uxores tuas in oculis tuis et dabo proximo tuo et dormiet cum uxoribus tuis in oculis solis huius
 
12.    For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.'"     For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.     כי  אתה  עשית  בסתר 
ואני  אעשה  את־הדבר
הזה  נגד  כל־ישראל
ונגד  השמש׃
    KY 'aThH 'yShYTh BSThUr V'aNY 'a'yShH 'aTh-HDBUr HZH NGD KL-YShUr'aL VNGD HShMSh.     for thou hast done it in secret, and I do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.`     tu enim fecisti abscondite ego vero faciam verbum istud in conspectu omnis Israhel et in conspectu solis
 
13.    David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against Yahweh." Nathan said to David, "Yahweh also has put away your sin. You will not die.     And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.     ויאמר  דוד  אל־נתן 
חטאתי  ליהוה  ויאמר
נתן  אל־דוד
גם־יהוה  העביר
חטאתך  לא  תמות׃
    VY'aMUr DVD 'aL-NThN ChT'aThY LYHVH VY'aMUr NThN 'aL-DVD GM-YHVH H'yBYUr ChT'aThK L'a ThMVTh.     And David saith unto Nathan, `I have sinned against Jehovah.` And Nathan saith unto David, `Also -- Jehovah hath caused thy sin to pass away; thou dost not die;     et dixit David ad Nathan peccavi Domino dixitque Nathan ad David Dominus quoque transtulit peccatum tuum non morieris
 
14.    However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to Yahweh's enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die."     Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.     אפס  כי־נאץ  נאצת 
את־איבי  יהוה  בדבר
הזה  גם  הבן  הילוד
לך  מות  ימות׃
    'aPhS KY-N'aTSh N'aTShTh 'aTh-'aYBY YHVH BDBUr HZH GM HBN HYLVD LK MVTh YMVTh.     only, because thou hast caused the enemies of Jehovah greatly to despise by this thing, also the son who is born to thee doth surely die.`     verumtamen quoniam blasphemare fecisti inimicos Domini propter verbum hoc filius qui natus est tibi morte morietur
 
15.    Nathan departed to his house. Yahweh struck the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and it was very sick.     And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.     וילך  נתן  אל־ביתו 
ויגף  יהוה  את־הילד
אשר  ילדה
אשת־אוריה  לדוד
ויאנש׃
    VYLK NThN 'aL-BYThV VYGPh YHVH 'aTh-HYLD 'aShUr YLDH 'aShTh-'aVUrYH LDVD VY'aNSh.     And Nathan goeth unto his house, and Jehovah smiteth the lad, whom the wife of Uriah hath born to David, and it is incurable;     et reversus est Nathan domum suam percussitque Dominus parvulum quem pepererat uxor Uriae David et desperatus est
 
16.    David therefore begged God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night on the earth.     David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.     ויבקש  דוד

ובא  ולן  ושכב
ארצה׃
    VYBQSh DVD 'aTh-H'aLHYM B'yD HN'yUr VYTShM DVD TShVM VB'a VLN VShKB 'aUrTShH.     and David seeketh God for the youth, and David keepeth a fast, and hath gone in and lodged, and lain on the earth.     deprecatusque est David Dominum pro parvulo et ieiunavit David ieiunio et ingressus seorsum iacuit super terram
 
17.    The elders of his house arose, [and stood] beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.     And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.     ויקמו  זקני  ביתו 
עליו  להקימו
מן־הארץ  ולא  אבה
ולא־ברא  אתם  לחם׃
    VYQMV ZQNY BYThV 'yLYV LHQYMV MN-H'aUrTSh VL'a 'aBH VL'a-BUr'a 'aThM LChM.     And the elders of his house rise against him, to raise him up from the earth, and he hath not been willing, nor hath he eaten with them bread;     venerunt autem seniores domus eius cogentes eum ut surgeret de terra qui noluit neque comedit cum eis cibum
 
18.    It happened on the seventh day, that the child died. The servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, "Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he didn't listen to our voice. How will he then harm himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?"     And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?     ויהי  ביום  השביעי 
וימת  הילד  ויראו
עבדי  דוד  להגיד  לו
כי־מת  הילד  כי
אמרו  הנה  בהיות
הילד  חי  דברנו
אליו  ולא־שמע
בקולנו  ואיך  נאמר
אליו  מת  הילד  ועשה
רעה׃
    VYHY BYVM HShBY'yY VYMTh HYLD VYUr'aV 'yBDY DVD LHGYD LV KY-MTh HYLD KY 'aMUrV HNH BHYVTh HYLD ChY DBUrNV 'aLYV VL'a-ShM'y BQVLNV V'aYK N'aMUr 'aLYV MTh HYLD V'yShH Ur'yH.     and it cometh to pass on the seventh day, that the lad dieth, and the servants of David fear to declare to him that the lad is dead, for they said, `Lo, in the lad being alive we spake unto him, and he did not hearken to our voice; and how do we say unto him, The lad is dead? -- then he hath done evil.`     accidit autem die septima ut moreretur infans timueruntque servi David nuntiare ei quod mortuus esset parvulus dixerunt enim ecce cum parvulus adhuc viveret loquebamur ad eum et non audiebat vocem nostram quanto magis si dixerimus mortuus est puer se adfliget
 
19.    But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, "Is the child dead?" They said, "He is dead."     But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.     וירא  דוד  כי  עבדיו 
מתלחשים  ויבן  דוד
כי  מת  הילד  ויאמר

הילד  ויאמרו  מת׃

20.    Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothing; and he came into the house of Yahweh, and worshiped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he ate.     Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.     ויקם  דוד  מהארץ 
וירחץ  ויסך  ויחלף
שמלתו  ויבא

ויבא  אל־ביתו
וישאל  וישימו  לו
לחם  ויאכל׃
    VYQM DVD MH'aUrTSh VYUrChTSh VYSK VYChLPh ShMLThV VYB'a BYTh-YHVH VYShThChV VYB'a 'aL-BYThV VYSh'aL VYShYMV LV LChM VY'aKL.     And David riseth from the earth, and doth bathe and anoint himself, and changeth his raiment, and cometh in to the house of Jehovah, and boweth himself, and cometh unto his house, and asketh and they place for him bread, and he eateth.     surrexit igitur David de terra et lotus unctusque est cumque mutasset vestem ingressus est domum Domini et adoravit et venit in domum suam petivitque ut ponerent ei panem et comedit
 
21.    Then said his servants to him, "What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child was dead, you rose up and ate bread."     Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.     ויאמרו  עבדיו  אליו 
מה־הדבר  הזה  אשר
עשיתה  בעבור  הילד
חי  צמת  ותבך  וכאשר
מת  הילד  קמת  ותאכל
לחם׃
    VY'aMUrV 'yBDYV 'aLYV MH-HDBUr HZH 'aShUr 'yShYThH B'yBVUr HYLD ChY TShMTh VThBK VK'aShUr MTh HYLD QMTh VTh'aKL LChM.     And his servants say unto him, `What is this thing thou hast done? because of the living lad thou hast fasted and dost weep, and when the lad is dead thou hast risen and dost eat bread.`     dixerunt autem ei servi sui quis est sermo quem fecisti propter infantem cum adhuc viveret ieiunasti et flebas mortuo autem puero surrexisti et comedisti panem
 
22.    He said, "While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, 'Who knows whether Yahweh will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?'     And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?     ויאמר  בעוד  הילד 
חי  צמתי  ואבכה  כי
אמרתי  מי  יודע
יחנני  יהוה  וחי
הילד׃
    VY'aMUr B'yVD HYLD ChY TShMThY V'aBKH KY 'aMUrThY MY YVD'y YChNNY YHVH VChY HYLD.     And he saith, `While the lad is alive I have fasted, and weep, for I said, Who knoweth? -- Jehovah doth pity me, and the lad hath lived;     qui ait propter infantem dum adhuc viveret ieiunavi et flevi dicebam enim quis scit si forte donet eum mihi Dominus et vivet infans
 
23.    But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me."     But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.     ועתה  מת  למה  זה 
אני  צם  האוכל
להשיבו  עוד  אני
הלך  אליו  והוא  לא־
ישוב  אלי׃
    V'yThH MTh LMH ZH 'aNY TShM H'aVKL LHShYBV 'yVD 'aNY HLK 'aLYV VHV'a L'a- YShVB 'aLY.     and now, he hath died, why is this -- I fast? am I able to bring him back again? I am going unto him, and he doth not turn back unto me.`     nunc autem quia mortuus est quare ieiuno numquid potero revocare eum amplius ego vadam magis ad eum ille vero non revertetur ad me
 
24.    David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her. She bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Yahweh loved him;     And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him.     וינחם  דוד  את 
בת־שבע  אשתו  ויבא
אליה  וישכב  עמה
ותלד  בן  ויקרא
את־שמו  שלמה  ויהוה
אהבו׃
    VYNChM DVD 'aTh BTh-ShB'y 'aShThV VYB'a 'aLYH VYShKB 'yMH VThLD BN VYQUr'a 'aTh-ShMV ShLMH VYHVH 'aHBV.     And David comforteth Bath-Sheba his wife, and goeth in unto her, and lieth with her, and she beareth a son, and he calleth his name Solomon; and Jehovah hath loved him,     et consolatus est David Bethsabee uxorem suam ingressusque ad eam dormivit cum ea quae genuit filium et vocavit nomen eius Salomon et Dominus dilexit eum
 
25.    and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he named him Jedidiah, for Yahweh's sake.     And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD.     וישלח  ביד  נתן 
הנביא  ויקרא
את־שמו  ידידיה
בעבור  יהוה׃
    VYShLCh BYD NThN HNBY'a VYQUr'a 'aTh-ShMV YDYDYH B'yBVUr YHVH.     and sendeth by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and calleth his name Jedidiah, because of Jehovah.     misitque in manu Nathan prophetae et vocavit nomen eius Amabilis Domino eo quod diligeret eum Dominus

30.    He took the crown of their king from off his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and [in it were] precious stones; and it was set on David's head. He brought forth the spoil of the city, exceeding much.     And he took their king's crown from off his head, the weight whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David's head. 31.    He brought forth the people who were therein, and put them under saws, and under iron picks, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick kiln: and he did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon.
