1.    It was told Joab, "Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Absalom."     And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom.     ויגד  ליואב  הנה 
המלך  בכה  ויתאבל
על־אבשלם׃
    VYGD LYV'aB HNH HMLK BKH VYTh'aBL 'yL-'aBShLM.     And it is declared to Joab, `Lo, the king is weeping and mourning for Absalom;`     nuntiatum est autem Ioab quod rex fleret et lugeret filium suum
 
2.    The victory that day was turned into mourning to all the people; for the people heard it said that day, "The king grieves for his son."     And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people: for the people heard say that day how the king was grieved for his son.     ותהי  התשעה  ביום 
ההוא  לאבל  לכל־העם
כי־שמע  העם  ביום
ההוא  לאמר  נעצב

    VThHY HThSh'yH BYVM HHV'a L'aBL LKL-H'yM KY-ShM'y H'yM BYVM HHV'a L'aMUr N'yTShB HMLK 'yL-BNV.     and the salvation on that day becometh mourning to all the people, for the people hath heard on that day, saying, `The king hath been grieved for his son.`     et versa est victoria in die illa in luctum omni populo audivit enim populus in die illa dici dolet rex super filio suo
 
3.    The people snuck into the city that day, as people who are ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.     And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.     ויתגנב  העם  ביום

    VYThGNB H'yM BYVM HHV'a LBV'a H'yYUr K'aShUr YThGNB H'yM HNKLMYM BNVSM BMLChMH.     And the people stealeth away, on that day, to go in to the city, as the people steal away, who are ashamed, in their fleeing in battle;     et declinabat populus in die illa ingredi civitatem quomodo declinare solet populus versus et fugiens de proelio
 
4.    The king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, "My son Absalom, Absalom, my son, my son!"     But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!     והמלך  לאט  את־פניו

    VHMLK L'aT 'aTh-PhNYV VYZ'yQ HMLK QVL GDVL BNY 'aBShLVM 'aBShLVM BNY BNY.     and the king hath covered his face, yea, the king crieth -- a loud voice -- `My son Absalom, Absalom, my son, my son.`     porro rex operuit caput suum et clamabat voce magna fili mi Absalom Absalom fili mi fili mi
 
5.    Joab came into the house to the king, and said, "You have shamed this day the faces of all your servants, who this day have saved your life, and the lives of your sons and of your daughters, and the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines;     And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;     ויבא  יואב  אל־המלך 
הבית  ויאמר  הבשת
היום  את־פני
כל־עבדיך  הממלטים
את־נפשך  היום  ואת
נפש  בניך  ובנתיך

    VYB'a YV'aB 'aL-HMLK HBYTh VY'aMUr HBShTh HYVM 'aTh-PhNY KL-'yBDYK HMMLTYM 'aTh-NPhShK HYVM V'aTh NPhSh BNYK VBNThYK VNPhSh NShYK VNPhSh PhLGShYK.     And Joab cometh in unto the king to the house, and saith, `Thou hast put to shame to-day the faces of all thy servants, those delivering thy life to-day, and the life of thy sons, and of thy daughters, and the life of thy wives, and the life of thy concubines,     ingressus ergo Ioab ad regem in domo dixit confudisti hodie vultus omnium servorum tuorum qui salvam fecerunt animam tuam et animam filiorum tuorum et filiarum tuarum et animam uxorum tuarum et animam concubinarum tuarum
 
6.    in that you love those who hate you, and hate those who love you. For you have declared this day, that princes and servants are nothing to you. For today I perceive that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it would have pleased you well.     In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.     לאהבה  את־שנאיך

7.    Now therefore arise, go out, and speak to comfort your servants; for I swear by Yahweh, if you don't go out, not a man will stay with you this night. That would be worse to you than all the evil that has happened to you from your youth until now."     Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants: for I swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that befell thee from thy youth until now.     ועתה  קום  צא  ודבר

ילין  איש  אתך

    V'yThH QVM TSh'a VDBUr 'yL-LB 'yBDYK KY BYHVH NShB'yThY KY-'aYNK YVTSh'a 'aM- YLYN 'aYSh 'aThK HLYLH VUr'yH LK Z'aTh MKL-HUr'yH 'aShUr-B'aH 'yLYK MN'yUrYK 'yD- 'yThH.     `And now, rise, go out and speak unto the heart of thy servants, for by Jehovah I have sworn, that -- thou art not going out -- there doth not lodge a man with thee to-night; and this is worse for thee than all the evil that hath come upon thee from thy youth till now.`     nunc igitur surge et procede et adloquens satisfac servis tuis iuro enim tibi per Dominum quod si non exieris ne unus quidem remansurus sit tecum nocte hac et peius erit hoc tibi quam omnia mala quae venerunt super te ab adulescentia tua usque in praesens
 
8.    Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. They told to all the people, saying, "Behold, the king is sitting in the gate." All the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his tent.     Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king doth sit in the gate. And all the people came before the king: for Israel had fled every man to his tent.     ויקם  המלך  וישב

איש  לאהליו׃
    VYQM HMLK VYShB BSh'yUr VLKL-H'yM HGYDV L'aMUr HNH HMLK YVShB BSh'yUr VYB'a KL-H'yM LPhNY HMLK VYShUr'aL NS 'aYSh L'aHLYV.     And the king riseth, and sitteth in the gate, and to all the people they have declared, saying, `Lo, the king is sitting in the gate;` and all the people come in before the king, and Israel hath fled, each to his tents.     surrexit ergo rex et sedit in porta et omni populo nuntiatum est quod rex sederet in porta venitque universa multitudo coram rege Israhel autem fugit in tabernacula sua
 
9.    All the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, "The king delivered us out of the hand of our enemies, and he saved us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he has fled out of the land from Absalom.     And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land for Absalom.     ויהי  כל־העם  נדון 
בכל־שבטי  ישראל
לאמר  המלך  הצילנו
מכף  איבינו  והוא
מלטנו  מכף  פלשתים
ועתה  ברח  מן־הארץ
מעל  אבשלום׃
    VYHY KL-H'yM NDVN BKL-ShBTY YShUr'aL L'aMUr HMLK HTShYLNV MKPh 'aYBYNV VHV'a MLTNV MKPh PhLShThYM V'yThH BUrCh MN-H'aUrTSh M'yL 'aBShLVM.     And it cometh to pass, all the people are contending through all the tribes of Israel, saying, `The king delivered us out of the hand of our enemies, yea, he himself delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines, and now he hath fled out of the land because of Absalom,     omnis quoque populus certabat in cunctis tribubus Israhel dicens rex liberavit nos de manu inimicorum nostrorum ipse salvavit nos de manu Philisthinorum et nunc fugit de terra propter Absalom
 
10.    Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why don't you speak a word of bringing the king back?"     And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?     ואבשלום  אשר  משחנו

11.    King David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, "Speak to the elders of Judah, saying, 'Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house? Since the speech of all Israel has come to the king, to return him to his house.     And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house.     והמלך  דוד  שלח 
אל־צדוק  ואל־אביתר
הכהנים  לאמר  דברו
אל־זקני  יהודה
לאמר  למה  תהיו
אחרנים  להשיב
את־המלך  אל־ביתו

12.    You are my brothers, you are my bone and my flesh. Why then are you the last to bring back the king?'     Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king?     אחי  אתם  עצמי

13.    Say to Amasa, 'Aren't you my bone and my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if you aren't captain of the army before me continually in the room of Joab.'"     And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.     ולעמשא  תמרו  הלוא

Thus doth God do to me, and thus He doth add, if thou art not head of the host before me all the days instead of Joab.`     et Amasae dicite nonne os meum es et caro mea haec faciat mihi Deus et haec addat si non magister militiae fueris coram me omni tempore pro Ioab
 
14.    He bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as [the heart of] one man; so that they sent to the king, saying, "Return, you and all your servants."     And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word unto the king, Return thou, and all thy servants.     ויט  את־לבב 
כל־איש־יהודה  כאיש
אחד  וישלחו
אל־המלך  שוב  אתה
וכל־  עבדיך׃
    VYT 'aTh-LBB KL-'aYSh-YHVDH K'aYSh 'aChD VYShLChV 'aL-HMLK ShVB 'aThH VKL- 'yBDYK.     And he inclineth the heart of all the men of Judah as one man, and they send unto the king, `Turn back, thou, and all thy servants.`     et inclinavit cor omnium virorum Iuda quasi viri unius miseruntque ad regem dicentes revertere tu et omnes servi tui
 
15.    So the king returned, and came to the Jordan. Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to bring the king over the Jordan.     So the king returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan.     וישב  המלך  ויבא 
עד־הירדן  ויהודה
בא  הגלגלה  ללכת

    VYShB HMLK VYB'a 'yD-HYUrDN VYHVDH B'a HGLGLH LLKTh LQUr'aTh HMLK LH'yBYUr 'aTh-HMLK 'aTh-HYUrDN.     And the king turneth back, and cometh in unto the Jordan, and Judah hath come to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to bring the king over the Jordan,     et reversus est rex et venit usque ad Iordanem et Iuda venit in Galgala ut occurreret regi et transduceret eum Iordanem
 
16.    Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, who was of Bahurim, hurried and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.     And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.     וימהר  שמעי  בן־גרא 
בן־הימיני  אשר

    VYMHUr ShM'yY BN-GUr'a BN-HYMYNY 'aShUr MBChVUrYM VYUrD 'yM-'aYSh YHVDH LQUr'aTh HMLK DVD.     and Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite, who is from Bahurim, hasteth, and cometh down with the men of Judah, to meet king David,     festinavit autem Semei filius Gera filii Iemini de Baurim et descendit cum viris Iuda in occursum regis David
 
17.    There were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went through the Jordan in the presence of the king.     And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king.     ואלף  איש  עמו

    V'aLPh 'aYSh 'yMV MBNYMN VTShYB'a N'yUr BYTh Sh'aVL VChMShTh 'yShUr BNYV V'yShUrYM 'yBDYV 'aThV VTShLChV HYUrDN LPhNY HMLK.     and a thousand men are with him from Benjamin, and Ziba servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him, and they have gone prosperously over the Jordan before the king.     cum mille viris de Beniamin et Siba puer de domo Saul et quindecim filii eius ac viginti servi erant cum eo et inrumpentes Iordanem ante regem
 
18.    A ferry boat went to bring over the king's household, and to do what he thought good. Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, when he was come over the Jordan.     And there went over a ferry boat to carry over the king's household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he was come over Jordan;     ועברה  העברה  לעביר

    V'yBUrH H'yBUrH L'yBYUr 'aTh-BYTh HMLK VL'yShVTh HTVB B'yYNV VShM'yY BN-GUr'a NPhL LPhNY HMLK B'yBUrV BYUrDN.     And passed over hath the ferry-boat to carry over the household of the king, and to do that which is good in his eyes, and Shimei son of Gera hath fallen before the king in his passing over into Jordan,     transierunt vada ut transducerent domum regis et facerent iuxta iussionem eius Semei autem filius Gera prostratus coram rege cum iam transisset Iordanem
 
19.    He said to the king, "Don't let my lord impute iniquity to me, neither do you remember that which your servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.     And said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.     ויאמר  אל־המלך 
אל־יחשב־לי  אדני
עון  ואל־תזכר  את
אשר  העוה  עבדך
ביום  אשר־יצא
אדני־המלך  מירושלם
לשום  המלך  אל־לבו׃
    VY'aMUr 'aL-HMLK 'aL-YChShB-LY 'aDNY 'yVN V'aL-ThZKUr 'aTh 'aShUr H'yVH 'yBDK BYVM 'aShUr-YTSh'a 'aDNY-HMLK MYUrVShLM LShVM HMLK 'aL-LBV.     and saith unto the king, `Let not my lord impute to me iniquity; neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely in the day that my lord the king went out from Jerusalem, -- for the king to set it unto his heart;     dixit ad eum ne reputes mihi domine mi iniquitatem neque memineris iniuriam servi tui in die qua egressus es domine mi rex de Hierusalem neque ponas rex in corde tuo
 
20.    For your servant knows that I have sinned. Therefore, behold, I have come this day the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king."     For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.     כי  ידע  עבדך  כי

21.    But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered, "Shall Shimei not be put to death for this, because he cursed Yahweh's anointed?"     But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD's anointed?     ויען  אבישי

משיח  יהוה׃
    VY'yN 'aBYShY BN-TShUrVYH VY'aMUr HThChTh Z'aTh L'a YVMTh ShM'yY KY QLL 'aTh- MShYCh YHVH.     And Abishai son of Zeruiah answereth and saith, `For this is not Shimei put to death -- because he reviled the anointed of Jehovah?`     respondens vero Abisai filius Sarviae dixit numquid pro his verbis non occidetur Semei quia maledixit christo Domini
 
22.    David said, "What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should this day be adversaries to me? Shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? For don't I know that I am this day king over Israel?"     And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?     ויאמר  דוד  מה־לי

    VY'aMUr DVD MH-LY VLKM BNY TShUrVYH KY-ThHYV-LY HYVM LShTN HYVM YVMTh 'aYSh BYShUr'aL KY HLV'a YD'yThY KY HYVM 'aNY-MLK 'yL-YShUr'aL.     And David saith, `What -- to me and to you, O sons of Zeruiah, that ye are to me to-day for an adversary? to-day is any man put to death in Israel? for have I not known that to-day I am king over Israel?`     et ait David quid mihi et vobis filii Sarviae cur efficimini mihi hodie in Satan ergone hodie interficietur vir in Israhel an ignoro hodie me factum regem super Israhel
 
23.    The king said to Shimei, "You shall not die." The king swore to him.     Therefore the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.     ויאמר  המלך

וישבע  לו  המלך׃
    VY'aMUr HMLK 'aL-ShM'yY L'a ThMVTh VYShB'y LV HMLK.     And the king saith unto Shimei, `Thou dost not die;` and the king sweareth to him.     et ait rex Semei non morieris iuravitque ei
 
24.    Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king; and he had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace.     And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.     ומפבשת  בן־שאול

    VMPhBShTh BN-Sh'aVL YUrD LQUr'aTh HMLK VL'a-'yShH UrGLYV VL'a-'yShH ShPhMV V'aTh- BGDYV L'a KBS LMN-HYVM LKTh HMLK 'yD-HYVM 'aShUr-B'a BShLVM.     And Mephibosheth son of Saul hath come down to meet the king -- and he prepared not his feet, nor did he prepare his upper lip, yea, his garments he washed not, even from the day of the going away of the king, till the day that he came in peace --     Mifiboseth quoque filius Saul descendit in occursum regis inlotis pedibus et intonsa barba vestesque suas non laverat a die qua egressus fuerat rex usque ad diem reversionis eius in pace
 
25.    It happened, when he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, "Why didn't you go with me, Mephibosheth?"     And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?     ויהי  כי־בא  ירושלם

    VYHY KY-B'a YUrVShLM LQUr'aTh HMLK VY'aMUr LV HMLK LMH L'a-HLKTh 'yMY MPhYBShTh.     and it cometh to pass, when he hath come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king saith to him, `Why didst thou not go with me, Mephibosheth?`     cumque Hierusalem occurrisset regi dixit ei rex quare non venisti mecum Mifiboseth
 
26.    He answered, "My lord, O king, my servant deceived me. For your servant said, I will saddle me a donkey, that I may ride thereon, and go with the king; because your servant is lame.     And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go to the king; because thy servant is lame.     ויאמר  אדני  המלך 
עבדי  רמני  כי־אמר
עבדך  אחבשה־לי
החמור  וארכב  עליה
ואלך  את־המלך  כי
פסח  עבדך׃
    VY'aMUr 'aDNY HMLK 'yBDY UrMNY KY-'aMUr 'yBDK 'aChBShH-LY HChMVUr V'aUrKB 'yLYH V'aLK 'aTh-HMLK KY PhSCh 'yBDK.     And he saith, `My lord, O king, my servant deceived me, for thy servant said, I saddle for me the ass, and ride on it, and go with the king, for thy servant is lame;     qui respondens ait domine mi rex servus meus contempsit me dixi ei ego famulus tuus ut sterneret mihi asinum et ascendens abirem cum rege claudus enim sum servus tuus
 
27.    He has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God. Do therefore what is good in your eyes.     And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.     וירגל  בעבדך

    VYUrGL B'yBDK 'aL-'aDNY HMLK V'aDNY HMLK KML'aK H'aLHYM V'yShH HTVB B'yYNYK.     and he uttereth slander against thy servant unto my lord the king, and my lord the king is as a messenger of God; and do thou that which is good in thine eyes,     insuper et accusavit me servum tuum ad te dominum meum regem tu autem domine mi rex sicut angelus Dei fac quod placitum est tibi
 
28.    For all my father's house were but dead men before my lord the king; yet you set your servant among those who ate at your own table. What right therefore have I yet that I should cry any more to the king?"     For all of my father's house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table.     KY L'a HYH KL-BYTh 'aBY KY 'aM-'aNShY-MVTh L'aDNY HMLK VThShTh 'aTh-'yBDK B'aKLY ShLChNK VMH-YSh-LY 'yVD TShDQH VLZ'yQ 'yVD 'aL-HMLK.     for all the house of my father have been nothing except men of death before my lord the king, and thou dost set thy servant among those eating at thy table, and what right have I any more -- even to cry any more unto the king?`     neque enim fuit domus patris mei nisi morti obnoxia domino meo regi tu autem posuisti me servum tuum inter convivas mensae tuae quid igitur habeo iustae querellae aut quid possum ultra vociferari ad regem
 
29.    The king said to him, "Why do you speak any more of your matters? I say, you and Ziba divide the land."     And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Ziba divide the land.     ויאמר  לו  המלך  למה 
תדבר  עוד  דבריך
אמרתי  אתה  וציבא
תחלקו  את־  השדה׃
    VY'aMUr LV HMLK LMH ThDBUr 'yVD DBUrYK 'aMUrThY 'aThH VTShYB'a ThChLQV 'aTh- HShDH.     And the king saith to him, `Why dost thou speak any more of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Ziba -- share ye the field.`     ait ergo ei rex quid ultra loqueris fixum est quod locutus sum tu et Siba dividite possessiones
 
30.    Mephibosheth said to the king, "Yes, let him take all, because my lord the king has come in peace to his own house."     And Mephibosheth said unto the king, Yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come again in peace unto his own house.     ויאמר  מפיבשת 
אל־המלך  גם  את־הכל
יקח  אחרי  אשר־בא
אדני  המלך  בשלום
אל־ביתו׃
    VY'aMUr MPhYBShTh 'aL-HMLK GM 'aTh-HKL YQCh 'aChUrY 'aShUr-B'a 'aDNY HMLK BShLVM 'aL-BYThV.     And Mephibosheth saith unto the king, `Yea, the whole let him take, after that my lord the king hath come in peace unto his house.`     responditque Mifiboseth regi etiam cuncta accipiat postquam reversus est dominus meus rex pacifice in domum suam
 
31.    Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim; and he went over the Jordan with the king, to conduct him over the Jordan.     And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.     וברזלי  הגלעדי  ירד 
מרגלים  ויעבר

    VBUrZLY HGL'yDY YUrD MUrGLYM VY'yBUr 'aTh-HMLK HYUrDN LShLChV 'aTh-BYUrDN.     And Barzillai the Gileadite hath gone down from Rogelim, and passeth over the Jordan with the king, to send him away over the Jordan;     Berzellai quoque Galaadites descendens de Rogelim transduxit regem Iordanem paratus etiam ultra fluvium prosequi eum
 
32.    Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even eighty years old: and he had provided the king with sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.     Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.     וברזלי  זקן  מאד

    VBUrZLY ZQN M'aD BN-ShMNYM ShNH VHV'a-KLKL 'aTh-HMLK BShYBThV BMChNYM KY-'aYSh GDVL HV'a M'aD.     and Barzillai is very aged, a son of eighty years, and he hath sustained the king in his abiding in Mahanaim, for he is a very great man;     erat autem Berzellai Galaadites senex valde id est octogenarius et ipse praebuit alimenta regi cum moraretur in Castris fuit quippe vir dives nimis
 
33.    The king said to Barzillai, "Come over with me, and I will sustain you with me in Jerusalem."     And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.     ויאמר  המלך 
אל־ברזלי  אתה  עבר
אתי  וכלכלתי  אתך
עמדי  בירושלם׃
    VY'aMUr HMLK 'aL-BUrZLY 'aThH 'yBUr 'aThY VKLKLThY 'aThK 'yMDY BYUrVShLM.     and the king saith unto Barzillai, `Pass thou over with me, and I have sustained thee with me in Jerusalem.`     dixit itaque rex ad Berzellai veni mecum ut requiescas secure mecum in Hierusalem
 
34.    Barzillai said to the king, "How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?     And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?     ויאמר  ברזלי 
אל־המלך  כמה  ימי
שני  חיי  כי־אעלה
את־המלך  ירושלם׃
    VY'aMUr BUrZLY 'aL-HMLK KMH YMY ShNY ChYY KY-'a'yLH 'aTh-HMLK YUrVShLM.     And Barzillai saith unto the king, `How many are the days of the years of my life, that I go up with the king to Jerusalem?     et ait Berzellai ad regem quot sunt dies annorum vitae meae ut ascendam cum rege Hierusalem
 
35.    I am this day eighty years old. Can I discern between good and bad? Can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should your servant be yet a burden to my lord the king?     I am this day fourscore years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?     בן־שמנים  שנה  אנכי

    BN-ShMNYM ShNH 'aNKY HYVM H'aD'y BYN-TVB LUr'y 'aM-YT'yM 'yBDK 'aTh-'aShUr 'aKL V'aTh-'aShUr 'aShThH 'aM-'aShM'y 'yVD BQVL ShUrYM VShUrVTh VLMH YHYH 'yBDK 'yVD LMSh'a 'aL-'aDNY HMLK.     A son of eighty years I am to-day; do I know between good and evil? doth thy servant taste that which I am eating, and that which I drink? do I hearken any more to the voice of singers and songstresses? and why is thy servant any more for a burden unto my lord the king?     octogenarius sum hodie numquid vigent sensus mei ad discernendum suave aut amarum aut delectare potest servum tuum cibus et potus vel audire ultra possum vocem cantorum atque cantricum quare servus tuus fit oneri domino meo regi
 
36.    Your servant would but just go over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king repay me with such a reward?     Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?     כמעט  יעבר  עבדך

37.    Please let your servant turn back again, that I may die in my own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold, your servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good to you."     Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.     ישב־נא  עבדך  ואמת 
בעירי  עם  קבר  אבי
ואמי  והנה  עבדך
כמהם  יעבר  עם־אדני
המלך  ועשה־לו  את

    YShB-N'a 'yBDK V'aMTh B'yYUrY 'yM QBUr 'aBY V'aMY VHNH 'yBDK KMHM Y'yBUr 'yM-'aDNY HMLK V'yShH-LV 'aTh 'aShUr-TVB B'yYNYK.     Let, I pray thee, thy servant turn back again, and I die in mine own city, near the burying-place of my father and of my mother, -- and lo, thy servant Chimham, let him pass over with my lord the king, and do thou to him that which is good in thine eyes.`     sed obsecro ut revertar servus tuus et moriar in civitate mea iuxta sepulchrum patris mei et matris meae est autem servus tuus Chamaam ipse vadat tecum domine mi rex et fac ei quod tibi bonum videtur
 
38.    The king answered, "Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good to you. Whatever you require of me, that I will do for you."     And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.     ויאמר  המלך  אתי 
יעבר  כמהם  ואני
אעשה־לו  את־הטוב
בעיניך  וכל  אשר־
תבחר  עלי  אעשה־לך׃
    VY'aMUr HMLK 'aThY Y'yBUr KMHM V'aNY 'a'yShH-LV 'aTh-HTVB B'yYNYK VKL 'aShUr- ThBChUr 'yLY 'a'yShH-LK.     And the king saith, `With me doth Chimham go over, and I do to him that which is good in thine eyes, yea, all that thou dost fix on me I do to thee.`     dixitque rex mecum transeat Chamaam et ego faciam ei quicquid tibi placuerit et omne quod petieris a me inpetrabis
 
39.    All the people went over the Jordan, and the king went over. Then the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned to his own place.     And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king was come over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.     ויעבר  כל־העם 
את־הירדן  והמלך
עבר  וישק  המלך
לברזלי  ויברכהו
וישב  למקמו׃
    VY'yBUr KL-H'yM 'aTh-HYUrDN VHMLK 'yBUr VYShQ HMLK LBUrZLY VYBUrKHV VYShB LMQMV.     And all the people pass over the Jordan, and the king hath passed over, and the king giveth a kiss to Barzillai, and blesseth him, and he turneth back to his place.     cumque transisset universus populus et rex Iordanem osculatus est rex Berzellai et benedixit ei et ille reversus est in locum suum
 
40.    So the king went over to Gilgal, and Chimham went over with him. All the people of Judah brought the king over, and also half the people of Israel.     Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.     ויעבר  המלך  הגלגלה 
וכמהן  עבר  עמו
וכל־עם  יהודה
ויעברו  את־המלך
וגם  חצי  עם  ישראל׃
    VY'yBUr HMLK HGLGLH VKMHN 'yBUr 'yMV VKL-'yM YHVDH VY'yBUrV 'aTh-HMLK VGM ChTShY 'yM YShUr'aL.     And the king passeth over to Gilgal, and Chimham hath passed over with him, and all the people of Judah, and they bring over the king, and also the half of the people of Israel.     transivit ergo rex in Galgalam et Chamaam cum eo omnis autem populus Iuda transduxerat regem et media tantum pars adfuerat de populo Israhel
 
41.    Behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to the king, "Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away, and brought the king, and his household, over the Jordan, and all David's men with him?"     And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David's men with him, over Jordan?     והנה  כל־איש  ישראל 
באים  אל־המלך
ויאמרו  אל־המלך
מדוע  גנבוך  אחינו
איש  יהודה  ויעברו
את־המלך  ואת־ביתו
את־הירדן  וכל־אנשי
דוד  עמו׃
    VHNH KL-'aYSh YShUr'aL B'aYM 'aL-HMLK VY'aMUrV 'aL-HMLK MDV'y GNBVK 'aChYNV 'aYSh YHVDH VY'yBUrV 'aTh-HMLK V'aTh-BYThV 'aTh-HYUrDN VKL-'aNShY DVD 'yMV.     And, lo, all the men of Israel are coming unto the king, and they say unto the king, `Wherefore have they stolen thee -- our brethren, the men of Judah?` (and they bring the king and his household over the Jordan, and all the men of David with him).     itaque omnes viri Israhel concurrentes ad regem dixerunt ei quare te furati sunt fratres nostri viri Iuda et transduxerunt regem et domum eius Iordanem omnesque viros David cum eo
 
42.    All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, "Because the king is a close relative to us. Why then are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king's cost? Or has he given us any gift?"     And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then be ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king's cost? or hath he given us any gift?     ויען  כל־איש  יהודה 
על־איש  ישראל
כי־קרוב  המלך  אלי
ולמה  זה  חרה  לך
על־הדבר  הזה  האכול
אכלנו  מן־המלך
אם־נשאת  נשא  לנו׃
    VY'yN KL-'aYSh YHVDH 'yL-'aYSh YShUr'aL KY-QUrVB HMLK 'aLY VLMH ZH ChUrH LK 'yL-HDBUr HZH H'aKVL 'aKLNV MN-HMLK 'aM-NSh'aTh NSh'a LNV.     And all the men of Judah answer against the men of Israel, `Because the king is near unto us, and why is this -- ye are displeased about this matter? have we at all eaten of the king`s substance? a gift hath he lifted up to us?`     et respondit omnis vir Iuda ad viros Israhel quia propior mihi est rex cur irasceris super hac re numquid comedimus aliquid ex rege aut munera nobis data sunt
 
43.    The men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, "We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more claim to David than you. Why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king?" The words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.     And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.     ויען  איש־ישראל

ויאמר  עשר־ידות  לי
במלך  וגם־בדוד  אני
ממך  ומדוע  הקלתני

    VY'yN 'aYSh-YShUr'aL 'aTh-'aYSh YHVDH VY'aMUr 'yShUr-YDVTh LY BMLK VGM-BDVD 'aNY MMK VMDV'y HQLThNY VL'a-HYH DBUrY Ur'aShVN LY LHShYB 'aTh-MLKY VYQSh DBUr-'aYSh YHVDH MDBUr 'aYSh YShUr'aL.     And the men of Israel answer the men of Judah, and say, `Ten parts we have in the king, and also in David more than you; and wherefore have ye lightly esteemed us, that our word hath not been first to bring back our king?` And the word of the men of Judah is sharper than the word of the men of Israel.     et respondit vir Israhel ad viros Iuda et ait decem partibus maior ego sum apud regem magisque ad me pertinet David quam ad te cur mihi fecisti iniuriam et non mihi nuntiatum est priori ut reducerem regem meum durius autem responderunt viri Iuda viris Israhel
