1.    Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brothers the Jews.     And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.     ותהי  צעקת  העם 
ונשיהם  גדולה
אל־אחיהם  היהודים׃
    VThHY TSh'yQTh H'yM VNShYHM GDVLH 'aL-'aChYHM HYHVDYM.     And there is a great cry of the people and their wives, concerning their brethren the Jews,     et factus est clamor populi et uxorum eius magnus adversus fratres suos iudaeos
 
2.    For there were that said, "We, our sons and our daughters, are many. Let us get grain, that we may eat and live."     For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.     ויש  אשר  אמרים 
בנינו  ובנתינו
אנחנו  רבים  ונקחה
דגן  ונאכלה  ונחיה׃
    VYSh 'aShUr 'aMUrYM BNYNV VBNThYNV 'aNChNV UrBYM VNQChH DGN VN'aKLH VNChYH.     yea, there are who are saying, `Our sons, and our daughters, we -- are many, and we receive corn, and eat, and live.`     et erant qui dicerent filii nostri et filiae nostrae multae sunt nimis accipiamus pro pretio eorum frumentum et comedamus et vivamus
 
3.    Some also there were that said, "We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses. Let us get grain, because of the famine."     Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.     ויש  אשר  אמרים 
שדתינו  וכרמינו
ובתינו  אנחנו
ערבים  ונקחה  דגן
ברעב׃
    VYSh 'aShUr 'aMUrYM ShDThYNV VKUrMYNV VBThYNV 'aNChNV 'yUrBYM VNQChH DGN BUr'yB.     And there are who are saying, `Our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses, we are pledging, and we receive corn for the famine.`     et erant qui dicerent agros nostros et vineas et domos nostras opponamus et accipiamus frumentum in fame
 
4.    There were also some who said, "We have borrowed money for the king's tribute using our fields and our vineyards as collateral.     There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.     ויש  אשר  אמרים 
לוינו  כסף  למדת
המלך  שדתינו
וכרמינו׃
    VYSh 'aShUr 'aMUrYM LVYNV KSPh LMDTh HMLK ShDThYNV VKUrMYNV.     And there are who are saying, `We have borrowed money for the tribute of the king, on our fields, and our vineyards;     et alii dicebant mutuo sumamus pecunias in tributa regis demusque agros nostros et vineas
 
5.    Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children as their children. Behold, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters have been brought into bondage. Neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards."     Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.     ועתה  כבשר  אחינו

    V'yThH KBShUr 'aChYNV BShUrNV KBNYHM BNYNV VHNH 'aNChNV KBShYM 'aTh-BNYNV V'aTh-BNThYNV L'yBDYM VYSh MBNThYNV NKBShVTh V'aYN L'aL YDNV VShDThYNV VKUrMYNV L'aChUrYM.     and now, as the flesh of our brethren is our flesh, as their sons are our sons, and lo, we are subduing our sons and our daughters for servants, and there are of our daughters subdued, and our hand hath no might, and our fields and our vineyards are to others.`     et nunc sicut carnes fratrum nostrorum sic carnes nostrae sunt sicut filii eorum ita filii nostri ecce nos subiugamus filios nostros et filias nostras in servitutem et de filiabus nostris sunt famulae nec habemus unde possint redimi et agros nostros et vineas alii possident
 
6.    I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.     And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.     ויחר  לי  מאד  כאשר

    VYChUr LY M'aD K'aShUr ShM'yThY 'aTh-Z'yQThM V'aTh HDBUrYM H'aLH.     And it is very displeasing to me when I have heard their cry and these words,     et iratus sum nimis cum audissem clamorem eorum secundum verba haec
 
7.    Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them, "You exact usury, everyone of his brother." I held a great assembly against them.     Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.     וימלך  לבי  עלי 
ואריבה  את־החרים
ואת־הסגנים  ואמרה
להם  משא  איש־
באחיו  אתם  נשאים
ואתן  עליהם  קהלה
גדולה׃
    VYMLK LBY 'yLY V'aUrYBH 'aTh-HChUrYM V'aTh-HSGNYM V'aMUrH LHM MSh'a 'aYSh- B'aChYV 'aThM NSh'aYM V'aThN 'yLYHM QHLH GDVLH.     and my heart reigneth over me, and I strive with the freemen, and with the prefects, and say to them, `Usury one upon another ye are exacting;` and I set against them a great assembly,     cogitavitque cor meum mecum et increpui optimates et magistratus et dixi eis usurasne singuli a fratribus vestris exigatis et congregavi adversus eos contionem magnam
 
8.    I said to them, "We, after our ability, have redeemed our brothers the Jews that were sold to the nations; and would you even sell your brothers, and should they be sold to us?" Then they held their peace, and found never a word.     And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.     ואמרה  להם  אנחנו 
קנינו  את־אחינו
היהודים  הנמכרים
לגוים  כדי  בנו
וגם־אתם  תמכרו
את־אחיכם
ונמכרו־לנו
ויחרישו  ולא  מצאו
דבר׃
    V'aMUrH LHM 'aNChNV QNYNV 'aTh-'aChYNV HYHVDYM HNMKUrYM LGVYM KDY BNV VGM-'aThM ThMKUrV 'aTh-'aChYKM VNMKUrV-LNV VYChUrYShV VL'a MTSh'aV DBUr.     and say to them, `We have acquired our brethren the Jews, those sold to the nations, according to the ability that is in us, and ye also sell your brethren, and they have been sold to us!` and they are silent, and have not found a word.     et dixi eis nos ut scitis redemimus fratres nostros iudaeos qui venditi fuerant gentibus secundum possibilitatem nostram et vos igitur vendite fratres vestros et emimus eos et siluerunt nec invenerunt quid responderent
 
9.    Also I said, "The thing that you do is not good. Ought you not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?     Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?     ויאמר  לא־טוב  הדבר 
אשר־אתם  עשים  הלוא
ביראת  אלהינו  תלכו
מחרפת  הגוים
אויבינו׃
    VY'aMUr L'a-TVB HDBUr 'aShUr-'aThM 'yShYM HLV'a BYUr'aTh 'aLHYNV ThLKV MChUrPhTh HGVYM 'aVYBYNV.     And I say, `Not good is the thing that ye are doing; in the fear of our God do ye not walk, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?     dixique ad eos non est bona res quam facitis quare non in timore Dei nostri ambulatis ne exprobretur nobis a gentibus inimicis nostris
 
10.    I likewise, my brothers and my servants, lend them money and grain. Please let us stop this usury.     I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.     וגם־אני  אחי  ונערי 
נשים  בהם  כסף  ודגן
נעזבה־נא  את־המשא
הזה׃
    VGM-'aNY 'aChY VN'yUrY NShYM BHM KSPh VDGN N'yZBH-N'a 'aTh-HMSh'a HZH.     And also, I, my brethren, and my servants, are exacting of them silver and corn; let us leave off, I pray you, this usury.     et ego et fratres mei et pueri mei commodavimus plurimis pecuniam et frumentum non repetamus in commune istud aes alienum concedamus quod debetur nobis
 
11.    Please restore to them, even this day, their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that you are charging them."     Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.     השיבו  נא  להם 
כהיום  שדתיהם
כרמיהם  זיתיהם
ובתיהם  ומאת  הכסף
והדגן  התירוש
והיצהר  אשר  אתם
נשים  בהם׃
    HShYBV N'a LHM KHYVM ShDThYHM KUrMYHM ZYThYHM VBThYHM VM'aTh HKSPh VHDGN HThYUrVSh VHYTShHUr 'aShUr 'aThM NShYM BHM.     Give back, I pray you, to them, as to-day, their fields, their vineyards, their olive-yards, and their houses, and the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, of the new wine, and of the oil, that ye are exacting of them.`     reddite eis hodie agros suos vineas suas oliveta sua et domos suas quin potius et centesimam pecuniae frumenti vini et olei quam exigere soletis ab eis date pro illis
 
12.    Then they said, "We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as you say." Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they would do according to this promise.     Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. ואשביעם  לעשות

    VY'aMUrV NShYB VMHM L'a NBQSh KN N'yShH K'aShUr 'aThH 'aVMUr V'aQUr'a 'aTh- HKHNYM V'aShBY'yM L'yShVTh KDBUr HZH.     And they say, `We give back, and of them we seek nothing; so we do as thou art saying.` And I call the priests, and cause them to swear to do according to this thing;     et dixerunt reddimus et ab eis nihil quaerimus sicque faciemus ut loqueris et vocavi sacerdotes et adiuravi eos ut facerent iuxta quod dixeram
 
13.    Also I shook out my lap, and said, "So may God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that doesn't perform this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied." All the assembly said, "Amen," and praised Yahweh. The people did according to this promise.     Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.     גם־חצני  נערתי 
ואמרה  ככה  ינער
האלהים  את־כל־האיש
אשר  לא־יקים
את־הדבר  הזה  מביתו
ומיגיעו  וככה  יהיה
נעור  ורק  ויאמרו
כל־הקהל  אמן
ויהללו  את־יהוה
ויעש  העם  כדבר
הזה׃
    GM-ChTShNY N'yUrThY V'aMUrH KKH YN'yUr H'aLHYM 'aTh-KL-H'aYSh 'aShUr L'a-YQYM 'aTh-HDBUr HZH MBYThV VMYGY'yV VKKH YHYH N'yVUr VUrQ VY'aMUrV KL-HQHL 'aMN VYHLLV 'aTh-YHVH VY'ySh H'yM KDBUr HZH.     also, my lap I have shaken, and I say, `Thus doth God shake out every man, who doth not perform this thing, from his house, and from his labour; yea, thus is he shaken out and empty;` and all the assembly say, `Amen,` and praise Jehovah; and the people do according to this thing.     insuper et sinum meum excussi et dixi sic excutiat Deus omnem virum qui non conpleverit verbum istud de domo sua et de laboribus suis sic excutiatur et vacuus fiat et dixit universa multitudo amen et laudaverunt Deum fecit ergo populus sicut dictum erat

    GM MYVM 'aShUr-TShVH 'aThY LHYVTh PhChM B'aUrTSh YHVDH MShNTh 'yShUrYM V'yD ShNTh ShLShYM VShThYM L'aUrThChShSTh'a HMLK ShNYM ShThYM 'yShUrH 'aNY V'aChY LChM HPhChH L'a 'aKLThY.     Also, from the day that he appointed me to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the thirty and second year of Artaxerxes the king -- twelve years -- I, and my brethren, the bread of the governor have not eaten:     a die autem illa qua praeceperat mihi ut essem dux in terra Iuda ab anno vicesimo usque ad annum tricesimum secundum Artarxersis regis per annos duodecim ego et fratres mei annonas quae ducibus debebantur non comedimus
 
15.    But the former governors who were before me were supported by the people, and took bread and wine from them, besides forty shekels of silver; yes, even their servants ruled over the people: but I didn't do so, because of the fear of God.     But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.     והפחות  הראשנים

    VHPhChVTh HUr'aShNYM 'aShUr-LPhNY HKBYDV 'yL-H'yM VYQChV MHM BLChM VYYN 'aChUr KSPh-ShQLYM 'aUrB'yYM GM N'yUrYHM ShLTV 'yL-H'yM V'aNY L'a-'yShYThY KN MPhNY YUr'aTh 'aLHYM.     the former governors who are before me have made themselves heavy on the people, and take of them in bread and wine, besides in silver forty shekels; also, their servants have ruled over the people -- and I have not done so, because of the fear of God.     duces autem primi qui fuerant ante me gravaverunt populum et acceperunt ab eis in pane vino et pecunia cotidie siclos quadraginta sed et ministri eorum depresserant populum ego autem non feci ita propter timorem Dei

    VGM BML'aKTh HChVMH HZ'aTh HChZQThY VShDH L'a QNYNV VKL-N'yUrY QBVTShYM ShM 'yL-HML'aKH.     And also, in the work of this wall I have done mightily, even a field we have not bought, and all my servants are gathered there for the work;     quin potius in opere muri aedificavi et agrum non emi et omnes pueri mei congregati ad opus erant
 
17.    Moreover there were at my table, of the Jews and the rulers, one hundred fifty men, besides those who came to us from among the nations that were around us.     Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.     והיהודים  והסגנים

    VHYHVDYM VHSGNYM M'aH VChMShYM 'aYSh VHB'aYM 'aLYNV MN-HGVYM 'aShUr- SBYBThYNV 'yL-ShLChNY.     and of the Jews, and of the prefects, a hundred and fifty men, and those coming in unto us of the nations that are round about us, are at my table;     Iudaei quoque et magistratus centum quinquaginta viri et qui veniebant ad nos de gentibus quae in circuitu nostro sunt in mensa mea erant

19.    Remember to me, my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.     Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.     זכרה־לי  אלהי
