VYShLCh SNBLT VGShM 'aLY L'aMUr LKH VNV'yDH YChDV BKPhYUrYM BBQ'yTh 'aVNV VHMH ChShBYM L'yShVTh LY Ur'yH. | that Sanballat sendeth, also Geshem, unto me, saying, `Come and we meet together in the villages, in the valley of Ono;` and they are thinking to do to me evil. | miserunt Sanaballat et Gosem ad me dicentes veni et percutiamus foedus pariter in viculis in campo Ono ipsi autem cogitabant ut facerent mihi malum | |||||
| 3. | I sent messengers to them, saying, "I am doing a great work, so that I can't come down. ואשלחה עליהם מלאכים לאמר מלאכה גדולה אני עשה ולא אוכל לרדת למה תשבת המלאכה כאשר ארפה וירדתי אליכם׃ |
V'aShLChH 'yLYHM ML'aKYM L'aMUr ML'aKH GDVLH 'aNY 'yShH VL'a 'aVKL LUrDTh LMH ThShBTh HML'aKH K'aShUr 'aUrPhH VYUrDThY 'aLYKM. | And I send unto them messengers, saying, `A great work I am doing, and I am not able to come down; why doth the work cease when I let it alone, and have come down unto you?` | misi ergo ad eos nuntios dicens opus grande ego facio et non possum descendere ne forte neglegatur cum venero et descendero ad vos | |||||

VYShLCh 'aLY SNBLT KDBUr HZH Ph'yM ChMYShYTh 'aTh-N'yUrV V'aGUrTh PhThVChH BYDV. | And Sanballat sendeth unto me, according to this word, a fifth time, his servant, and an open letter in his hand; | et misit ad me Sanaballat iuxta verbum prius quinta vice puerum suum et epistulam habebat in manu scriptam hoc modo | |||||
| 6. | in which was written, "It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel. Because of that, you are building the wall. You would be their king, according to these words. | Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words. |
כתוב בה בגוים נשמע וגשמו אמר אתה והיהודים חשבים למרוד על־כן אתה בונה החומה ואתה הוה להם למלך כדברים האלה׃ |

| 7. | You have also appointed prophets to preach of you at Jerusalem, saying, 'There is a king in Judah!' Now it will be reported to the king according to these words. | 9. | For they all would have made us afraid, saying, "Their hands will be weakened from the work, that it not be done. But now, [God], strengthen my hands." | For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. |

| 10. | I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, "Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you; yes, in the night will they come to kill you." | Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee. |

V'aNY-B'aThY BYTh ShM'yYH BN-DLYH BN-MHYTB'aL VHV'a 'yTShVUr VY'aMUr NV'yD 'aL-BYTh H'aLHYM 'aL-ThVK HHYKL VNSGUrH DLThVTh HHYKL KY B'aYM LHUrGK VLYLH B'aYM LHUrGK. | And I have entered the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabeel -- and he is restrained -- and he saith, `Let us meet at the house of God, at the inside of the temple, and we shut the doors of the temple, for they are coming in to slay thee -- yea, by night they are coming in to slay thee.` | et ingressus sum domum Samaiae filii Dalaiae filii Metabehel secreto qui ait tractemus nobiscum in domo Dei in medio templi et claudamus portas aedis quia venturi sunt ut interficiant te et nocte venturi sunt ad occidendum te | |||||

V'aMUrH H'aYSh KMVNY YBUrCh VMY KMVNY 'aShUr-YBV'a 'aL-HHYKL VChY L'a 'aBV'a. | And I say, `A man such as I -- doth he flee? and who as I, that doth go in unto the temple, and live? -- I do not go in.` | et dixi num quisquam similis mei fugit et quis ut ego ingredietur templum et vivet non ingrediar | |||||
| 12. | I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. | And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. |
ואכירה והנה לא־אלהים שלחו כי הנבואה דבר עלי וטוביה וסנבלט שכרו׃ |
V'aKYUrH VHNH L'a-'aLHYM ShLChV KY HNBV'aH DBUr 'yLY VTVBYH VSNBLT ShKUrV. | And I discern, and lo, God hath not sent him, for in the prophecy he hath spoken unto me both Tobiah and Sanballat hired him, | et intellexi quod Deus non misisset eum sed quasi vaticinans locutus esset ad me et Tobia et Sanaballat conduxissent eum | |||||
| 13. | He hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me. | Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me. |
למען שכור הוא למען־אירא ואעשה־כן וחטאתי והיה להם לשם רע למען יחרפוני׃ |
LM'yN ShKVUr HV'a LM'yN-'aYUr'a V'a'yShH-KN VChT'aThY VHYH LHM LShM Ur'y LM'yN YChUrPhVNY. | so that he is an hireling, that I may fear and do so, and I had sinned, and it had been to them for an evil name that they may reproach me. | acceperat enim pretium ut territus facerem et peccarem et haberent malum quod exprobrarent mihi | |||||
| 14. | "Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear." | My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear. |
זכרה אלהי לטוביה ולסנבלט כמעשיו אלה וגם לנועדיה הנביאה וליתר הנביאים אשר היו מיראים אותי׃ |
ZKUrH 'aLHY LTVBYH VLSNBLT KM'yShYV 'aLH VGM LNV'yDYH HNBY'aH VLYThUr HNBY'aYM 'aShUr HYV MYUr'aYM 'aVThY. | Be mindful, O my God, of Tobiah, and of Sanballat, according to these his works, and also, of Noadiah the prophetess, and of the rest of the prophets who have been making me afraid. | memento Domine mei pro Tobia et Sanaballat iuxta opera eorum talia sed et Noadiae prophetae et ceterorum prophetarum qui terrebant me | |||||
| 15. | So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth [day] of [the month] Elul, in fifty-two days. | So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days. |

| 16. | It happened, when all our enemies heard [of it], that all the nations that were about us feared, and were much cast down in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was worked of our God. | And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God. |
ויהי כאשר שמעו כל־אויבינו ויראו כל־הגוים אשר סביבתינו ויפלו מאד בעיניהם וידעו כי מאת אלהינו נעשתה המלאכה הזאת׃ |
