1.    A man of the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as his wife.     And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.     וילך  איש  מבית  לוי 
ויקח  את־בת־לוי׃
    VYLK 'aYSh MBYTh LVY VYQCh 'aTh-BTh-LVY.     And there goeth a man of the house of Levi, and he taketh the daughter of Levi,     egressus est post haec vir de domo Levi accepta uxore stirpis suae
 
2.    The woman conceived, and bore a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.     And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.     ותהר  האשה  ותלד  בן 
ותרא  אתו  כי־טוב
הוא  ותצפנהו  שלשה

3.    When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket for him, and coated it with tar and with pitch. She put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river's bank.     And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink.     ולא־יכלה  עוד 
הצפינו  ותקח־לו
תבת  גמא  ותחמרה
בחמר  ובזפת  ותשם
בה  את־הילד  ותשם
בסוף  על־שפת  היאר׃
    VL'a-YKLH 'yVD HTShPhYNV VThQCh-LV ThBTh GM'a VThChMUrH BChMUr VBZPhTh VThShM BH 'aTh-HYLD VThShM BSVPh 'yL-ShPhTh HY'aUr.     and she hath not been able any more to hide him, and she taketh for him an ark of rushes, and daubeth it with bitumen and with pitch, and putteth the lad in it, and putteth it in the weeds by the edge of the River;     cumque iam celare non posset sumpsit fiscellam scirpeam et linivit eam bitumine ac pice posuitque intus infantulum et exposuit eum in carecto ripae fluminis
 
4.    His sister stood far off, to see what would be done to him.     And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.     ותתצב  אחתו  מרחק 
לדעה  מה־יעשה  לו׃

5.    Pharaoh's daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her handmaid to get it.     And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it.     ותרד  בת־פרעה  לרחץ 
על־היאר  ונערתיה
הלכת  על־יד  היאר
ותרא  את־  התבה
בתוך  הסוף  ותשלח
את־אמתה  ותקחה׃

6.    She opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had compassion on him, and said, "This is one of the Hebrews' children."     And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children.     ותפתח  ותראהו

אל־בת־פרעה  האלך
וקראתי  לך  אשה
מינקת  מן  העברית

    VTh'aMUr 'aChThV 'aL-BTh-PhUr'yH H'aLK VQUr'aThY LK 'aShH MYNQTh MN H'yBUrYTh VThYNQ LK 'aTh-HYLD.     And his sister saith unto the daughter of Pharaoh, `Do I go? when I have called for thee a suckling woman of the Hebrews, then she doth suckle the lad for thee;`     cui soror pueri vis inquit ut vadam et vocem tibi hebraeam mulierem quae nutrire possit infantulum
 
8.    Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Go." The maiden went and called the child's mother.     And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother.     ותאמר־לה  בת־פרעה 
לכי  ותלך  העלמה
ותקרא  את־אם  הילד׃
    VTh'aMUr-LH BTh-PhUr'yH LKY VThLK H'yLMH VThQUr'a 'aTh-'aM HYLD.     and the daughter of Pharaoh saith to her, `Go;` and the virgin goeth, and calleth the mother of the lad,     respondit vade perrexit puella et vocavit matrem eius
 
9.    Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages." The woman took the child, and nursed it.     And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it.     ותאמר  לה  בת־פרעה

    VTh'aMUr LH BTh-PhUr'yH HYLYKY 'aTh-HYLD HZH VHYNQHV LY V'aNY 'aThN 'aTh- ShKUrK VThQCh H'aShH HYLD VThNYQHV.     and the daughter of Pharaoh saith to her, `Take this lad away, and suckle him for me, and I -- I give thy hire;` and the woman taketh the lad, and suckleth him.     ad quam locuta filia Pharaonis accipe ait puerum istum et nutri mihi ego tibi dabo mercedem tuam suscepit mulier et nutrivit puerum adultumque tradidit filiae Pharaonis
 
10.    The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses,{"Moses" sounds like the Hebrew for "draw out".} and said, "Because I drew him out of the water."     And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.     ויגדל  הילד  ותבאהו 
לבת־פרעה  ויהי־לה
לבן  ותקרא  שמו  משה
ותאמר  כי  מן־המים
משיתהו׃
    VYGDL HYLD VThB'aHV LBTh-PhUr'yH VYHY-LH LBN VThQUr'a ShMV MShH VTh'aMUr KY MN-HMYM MShYThHV.     And the lad groweth, and she bringeth him in to the daughter of Pharaoh, and he is to her for a son, and she calleth his name Moses, and saith, `Because -- from the water I have drawn him.`     quem illa adoptavit in locum filii vocavitque nomen eius Mosi dicens quia de aqua tuli eum
 
11.    It happened in those days, when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brothers, and looked at their burdens. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.     And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.     ויהי  בימים  ההם 
ויגדל  משה  ויצא
אל־אחיו  וירא

מצרי  מכה  איש־עברי

    VYHY BYMYM HHM VYGDL MShH VYTSh'a 'aL-'aChYV VYUr'a BSBLThM VYUr'a 'aYSh MTShUrY MKH 'aYSh-'yBUrY M'aChYV.     And it cometh to pass, in those days, that Moses is grown, and he goeth out unto his brethren, and looketh on their burdens, and seeth a man, an Egyptian, smiting a man, a Hebrew, one of his brethren,     in diebus illis postquam creverat Moses egressus ad fratres suos vidit adflictionem eorum et virum aegyptium percutientem quendam de Hebraeis fratribus suis
 
12.    He looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no one, he killed the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.     And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.     ויפן  כה  וכה  וירא 
כי  אין  איש  ויך
את־המצרי  ויטמנהו
בחול׃
    VYPhN KH VKH VYUr'a KY 'aYN 'aYSh VYK 'aTh-HMTShUrY VYTMNHV BChVL.     and he turneth hither and thither, and seeth that there is no man, and smiteth the Egyptian, and hideth him in the sand.     cumque circumspexisset huc atque illuc et nullum adesse vidisset percussum Aegyptium abscondit sabulo
 
13.    He went out the second day, and behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. He said to him who did the wrong, "Why do you strike your fellow?"     And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?     ויצא  ביום  השני 
והנה  שני־אנשים
עברים  נצים  ויאמר
לרשע  למה  תכה  רעך׃
    VYTSh'a BYVM HShNY VHNH ShNY-'aNShYM 'yBUrYM NTShYM VY'aMUr LUrSh'y LMH ThKH Ur'yK.     And he goeth out on the second day, and lo, two men, Hebrews, striving! and he saith to the wrong-doer, `Why dost thou smite thy neighbour?`     et egressus die altero conspexit duos Hebraeos rixantes dixitque ei qui faciebat iniuriam quare percutis proximum tuum
 
14.    He said, "Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?" Moses was afraid, and said, "Surely this thing is known."     And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.     ויאמר  מי  שמך  לאיש 
שר  ושפט  עלינו
הלהרגני  אתה  אמר
כאשר  הרגת  את־
המצרי  ויירא  משה
ויאמר  אכן  נודע
הדבר׃
    VY'aMUr MY ShMK L'aYSh ShUr VShPhT 'yLYNV HLHUrGNY 'aThH 'aMUr K'aShUr HUrGTh 'aTh- HMTShUrY VYYUr'a MShH VY'aMUr 'aKN NVD'y HDBUr.     and he saith, `Who set thee for a head and a judge over us? to slay me art thou saying it, as thou hast slain the Egyptian?` and Moses feareth, and saith, `Surely the thing hath been known.`     qui respondit quis constituit te principem et iudicem super nos num occidere me tu dicis sicut occidisti Aegyptium timuit Moses et ait quomodo palam factum est verbum istud
 
15.    Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.     Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.     וישמע  פרעה 
את־הדבר  הזה  ויבקש
להרג  את־משה  ויברח
משה  מפני  פרעה
וישב  בארץ־מדין
וישב  על־הבאר׃

18.    When they came to Reuel, their father, he said, "How is it that you have returned so early today?"     And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day?     ותבאנה  אל־רעואל 
אביהן  ויאמר  מדוע
מהרתן  בא  היום׃
    VThB'aNH 'aL-Ur'yV'aL 'aBYHN VY'aMUr MDV'y MHUrThN B'a HYVM.     And they come in to Reuel their father, and he saith, `Wherefore have ye hastened to come in to-day?`     quae cum revertissent ad Raguhel patrem suum dixit ad eas cur velocius venistis solito
 
19.    They said, "An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock."     And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.     ותאמרן  איש  מצרי 
הצילנו  מיד  הרעים
וגם־דלה  דלה  לנו
וישק  את־  הצאן׃
    VTh'aMUrN 'aYSh MTShUrY HTShYLNV MYD HUr'yYM VGM-DLH DLH LNV VYShQ 'aTh- HTSh'aN.     and they say, `A man, an Egyptian, hath delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also hath diligently drawn for us, and watereth the flock;`     responderunt vir aegyptius liberavit nos de manu pastorum insuper et hausit aquam nobiscum potumque dedit ovibus
 
20.    He said to his daughters, "Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread."     And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.     ויאמר  אל־בנתיו 
ואיו  למה  זה  עזבתן
את־האיש  קראן  לו
ויאכל  לחם׃
    VY'aMUr 'aL-BNThYV V'aYV LMH ZH 'yZBThN 'aTh-H'aYSh QUr'aN LV VY'aKL LChM.     and he saith unto his daughters, `And where is he? why is this? -- ye left the man! call for him, and he doth eat bread.`     at ille ubi est inquit quare dimisistis hominem vocate eum ut comedat panem
 
21.    Moses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses Zipporah, his daughter.     And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.     ויואל  משה  לשבת

    VYV'aL MShH LShBTh 'aTh-H'aYSh VYThN 'aTh-TShPhUrH BThV LMShH.     And Moses is willing to dwell with the man, and he giveth Zipporah his daughter to Moses,     iuravit ergo Moses quod habitaret cum eo accepitque Sefforam filiam eius
 
22.    She bore a son, and he named him Gershom,{"Gershom" sounds like the Hebrew for "an alien there."} for he said, "I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land."     And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.     ותלד  בן  ויקרא

נכריה׃

23.    It happened in the course of those many days, that the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.     And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.     ויהי  בימים  הרבים

שועתם  אל־האלהים

24.    God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.     And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.     וישמע  אלהים

    VYShM'y 'aLHYM 'aTh-N'aQThM VYZKUr 'aLHYM 'aTh-BUrYThV 'aTh-'aBUrHM 'aTh-YTShChQ V'aTh-Y'yQB.     and God heareth their groaning, and God remembereth His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob;     et audivit gemitum eorum ac recordatus foederis quod pepigerat cum Abraham et Isaac et Iacob
 
25.    God saw the children of Israel, and God was concerned about them.     And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.     וירא  אלהים  את־בני
