1.    Now it happened in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah, and captured them.     Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.     ויהי  בארבע  עשרה

עלה  סנחריב
מלך־אשור  על
כל־ערי  יהודה
הבצרות  ויתפשם׃
    VYHY B'aUrB'y 'yShUrH ShNH LMLK ChZQYHV 'yLH SNChUrYB MLK-'aShVUr 'yL KL-'yUrY YHVDH HBTShUrVTh VYThPhShM.     And it cometh to pass, in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, come up hath Sennacherib king of Asshur against all the fenced cities of Judah, and seizeth them.     et factum est in quartodecimo anno regis Ezechiae ascendit Sennacherib rex Assyriorum super omnes civitates Iuda munitas et cepit eas
 
2.    The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool in the fuller's field highway.     And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.     וישלח  מלך־אשור 
את־רב־שקה  מלכיש
ירושלמה  אל־המלך
חזקיהו  בחיל  כבד
ויעמד  בתעלת  הברכה
העליונה  במסלת  שדה
כובס׃
    VYShLCh MLK-'aShVUr 'aTh-UrB-ShQH MLKYSh YUrVShLMH 'aL-HMLK ChZQYHV BChYL KBD VY'yMD BTh'yLTh HBUrKH H'yLYVNH BMSLTh ShDH KVBS.     And the king of Asshur sendeth Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem, unto the king Hezekiah, with a heavy force, and he standeth by the conduit of the upper pool, in the highway of the fuller`s field,     et misit rex Assyriorum Rabsacen de Lachis in Hierusalem ad regem Ezechiam in manu gravi et stetit in aquaeductu piscinae superioris in via agri Fullonis
 
3.    Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder came out to him.     Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah's son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph's son, the recorder.     ויצא  אליו  אליקים 
בן־חלקיהו  אשר
על־הבית  ושבנא
הספר  ויואח  בן־
אסף  המזכיר׃
    VYTSh'a 'aLYV 'aLYQYM BN-ChLQYHV 'aShUr 'yL-HBYTh VShBN'a HSPhUr VYV'aCh BN- 'aSPh HMZKYUr.     and go forth unto him doth Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who is over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer.     et egressus est ad eum Eliachim filius Helciae qui erat super domum et Sobna scriba et Ioae filius Asaph a commentariis
 
4.    Rabshakeh said to them, "Now tell Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, "What confidence is this in which you trust?     And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?     ויאמר  אליהם 
רב־שקה  אמרו־נא
אל־חזקיהו  כה־אמר
המלך  הגדול  מלך
אשור  מה  הבטחון
הזה  אשר  בטחת׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYHM UrB-ShQH 'aMUrV-N'a 'aL-ChZQYHV KH-'aMUr HMLK HGDVL MLK 'aShVUr MH HBTChVN HZH 'aShUr BTChTh.     And Rabshakeh saith unto them, `Say ye, I pray you, unto Hezekiah, `Thus said the great king, the king of Asshur, What is this confidence in which thou hast confided?     et dixit ad eos Rabsaces dicite Ezechiae haec dicit rex magnus rex Assyriorum quae est ista fiducia qua confidis
 
5.    I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?     I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?     אמרתי 
אך־דבר־שפתים  עצה
וגבורה  למלחמה  עתה
על־מי  בטחת  כי
מרדת  בי׃
    'aMUrThY 'aK-DBUr-ShPhThYM 'yTShH VGBVUrH LMLChMH 'yThH 'yL-MY BTChTh KY MUrDTh BY.     I have said: Only, a word of the lips! counsel and might are for battle: now, on whom hast thou trusted, that thou hast rebelled against me?     aut quo consilio vel fortitudine rebellare disponis super quem habes fiduciam quia recessisti a me
 
6.    Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.     Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.     הנה  בטחת  על־משענת 
הקנה  הרצוץ  הזה
על־מצרים  אשר  יסמך
איש  עליו  ובא  בכפו
ונקבה  כן  פרעה
מלך־מצרים
לכל־הבטחים  עליו׃
    HNH BTChTh 'yL-MSh'yNTh HQNH HUrTShVTSh HZH 'yL-MTShUrYM 'aShUr YSMK 'aYSh 'yLYV VB'a BKPhV VNQBH KN PhUr'yH MLK-MTShUrYM LKL-HBTChYM 'yLYV.     `Lo, thou hast trusted on the staff of this broken reed -- on Egypt -- which a man leaneth on, and it hath gone into his hand, and pierced it -- so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all those trusting on him.     ecce confidis super baculum harundineum confractum istum super Aegyptum cui si innisus fuerit homo intrabit in manu eius et perforabit eam sic Pharao rex Aegypti omnibus qui confidunt in eo
 
7.    But if you tell me, 'We trust in Yahweh our God,' isn't that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, 'You shall worship before this altar?'"     But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?     וכי־תאמר  אלי 
אל־יהוה  אלהינו
בטחנו  הלוא־הוא
אשר  הסיר  חזקיהו
את־  במתיו
ואת־מזבחתיו  ויאמר
ליהודה  ולירושלם
לפני  המזבח  הזה
תשתחוו׃
    VKY-Th'aMUr 'aLY 'aL-YHVH 'aLHYNV BTChNV HLV'a-HV'a 'aShUr HSYUr ChZQYHV 'aTh- BMThYV V'aTh-MZBChThYV VY'aMUr LYHVDH VLYUrVShLM LPhNY HMZBCh HZH ThShThChVV.     `And dost thou say unto me, Unto Jehovah our God we have trusted? is it not He, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath turned aside, and saith to Judah and to Jerusalem, Before this altar ye do bow yourselves?     quod si responderis mihi in Domino Deo nostro confidimus nonne ipse est cuius abstulit Ezechias excelsa et altaria et dixit Iudae et Hierusalem coram altari isto adorabitis
 
8.    Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.     Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.     ועתה  התערב  נא 
את־אדני  המלך  אשור
ואתנה  לך  אלפים
סוסים  אם־תוכל  לתת
לך  רכבים  עליהם׃
    V'yThH HTh'yUrB N'a 'aTh-'aDNY HMLK 'aShVUr V'aThNH LK 'aLPhYM SVSYM 'aM-ThVKL LThTh LK UrKBYM 'yLYHM.     `And now, negotiate, I pray thee, with my lord the king of Asshur, and I give to thee two thousand horses, if thou art able to put for thee riders on them.     et nunc trade te domino meo regi Assyriorum et dabo tibi duo milia equorum nec poteris ex te praebere ascensores eorum
 
9.    How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?     How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?     ואיך  תשיב  את  פני 
פחת  אחד  עבדי  אדני
הקטנים  ותבטח  לך
על־מצרים  לרכב
ולפרשים׃
    V'aYK ThShYB 'aTh PhNY PhChTh 'aChD 'yBDY 'aDNY HQTNYM VThBTCh LK 'yL-MTShUrYM LUrKB VLPhUrShYM.     And how dost thou turn back the face of one captain of the least of the servants of my lord, and dost trust for thee on Egypt, for chariot and for horsemen?     et quomodo sustinebis faciem iudicis unius loci ex servis domini mei minoribus quod si confidis in Aegypto in quadriga et in equitibus
 
10.    Have I come up now without Yahweh against this land to destroy it? Yahweh said to me, "Go up against this land, and destroy it."'"     And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.     ועתה  המבלעדי  יהוה 
עליתי  על־הארץ
הזאת  להשחיתה  יהוה
אמר  אלי  עלה
אל־הארץ  הזאת
והשחיתה׃
    V'yThH HMBL'yDY YHVH 'yLYThY 'yL-H'aUrTSh HZ'aTh LHShChYThH YHVH 'aMUr 'aLY 'yLH 'aL-H'aUrTSh HZ'aTh VHShChYThH.     And now, without Jehovah have I come up against this land to destroy it? Jehovah said unto me, Go up unto this land, and thou hast destroyed it.`     et nunc numquid sine Domino ascendi ad terram istam ut disperderem eam Dominus dixit ad me ascende super terram istam et disperde eam
 
11.    Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and don't speak to us in the Jews' language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall."     Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.     ויאמר  אליקים 
ושבנא  ויואח
אל־רב־שקה  דבר־נא
אל־עבדיך  ארמית  כי
שמעים  אנחנו
ואל־תדבר  אלינו
יהודית  באזני  העם
אשר  על־החומה׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYQYM VShBN'a VYV'aCh 'aL-UrB-ShQH DBUr-N'a 'aL-'yBDYK 'aUrMYTh KY ShM'yYM 'aNChNV V'aL-ThDBUr 'aLYNV YHVDYTh B'aZNY H'yM 'aShUr 'yL-HChVMH.     And Eliakim saith -- and Shebna and Joah -- unto Rabshakeh, `Speak, we pray thee, unto thy servants in Aramaean, for we are understanding; and do not speak unto us in Jewish, in the ears of the people who are on the wall.`     et dixit Eliachim et Sobna et Ioae ad Rabsacen loquere ad servos tuos syra lingua intellegimus enim ne loquaris ad nos iudaice in auribus populi qui est super murum
 
12.    But Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?"     But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?     ויאמר  רב־שקה  האל 
אדניך  ואליך  שלחני
אדני  לדבר
את־הדברים  האלה
הלא  על־האנשים
הישבים  על־החומה
לאכל  את־חראיהם
ולשתות  את־שיניהם
עמכם׃
    VY'aMUr UrB-ShQH H'aL 'aDNYK V'aLYK ShLChNY 'aDNY LDBUr 'aTh-HDBUrYM H'aLH HL'a 'yL-H'aNShYM HYShBYM 'yL-HChVMH L'aKL 'aTh-ChUr'aYHM VLShThVTh 'aTh-ShYNYHM 'yMKM.     And Rabshakeh saith, `Unto thy lord, and unto thee, hath my lord sent me to speak these words? is it not for the men -- those sitting on the wall to eat their own dung and to drink their own water with you?`     et dixit ad eos Rabsaces numquid ad dominum tuum et ad te misit me dominus meus ut loquerer omnia verba ista et non potius ad viros qui sedent in muro ut comedant stercora sua et bibant urinam pedum suorum vobiscum
 
13.    Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!     Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.     ויעמד  רב־שקה 
ויקרא  בקול־גדול
יהודית  ויאמר  שמעו
את־דברי  המלך
הגדול  מלך  אשור׃
    VY'yMD UrB-ShQH VYQUr'a BQVL-GDVL YHVDYTh VY'aMUr ShM'yV 'aTh-DBUrY HMLK HGDVL MLK 'aShVUr.     And Rabshakeh standeth and calleth with a great voice in Jewish, and saith, `Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Asshur:     et stetit Rabsaces et clamavit voce magna iudaice et dixit audite verba regis magni regis Assyriorum
 
14.    Thus says the king, 'Don't let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you.     Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.     כה  אמר  המלך 
אל־ישא  לכם  חזקיהו
כי  לא־יוכל  להציל
אתכם׃
    KH 'aMUr HMLK 'aL-YSh'a LKM ChZQYHV KY L'a-YVKL LHTShYL 'aThKM.     Thus said the king, Let not Hezekiah lift you up, for he is not able to deliver you;     haec dicit rex non seducat vos Ezechias quia non poterit eruere vos
 
15.    Don't let Hezekiah make you trust in Yahweh, saying, "Yahweh will surely deliver us. This city won't be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."'     Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.     ואל־יבטח  אתכם 
חזקיהו  אל־יהוה
לאמר  הצל  יצילנו
יהוה  לא  תנתן  העיר
הזאת  ביד  מלך
אשור׃
    V'aL-YBTCh 'aThKM ChZQYHV 'aL-YHVH L'aMUr HTShL YTShYLNV YHVH L'a ThNThN H'yYUr HZ'aTh BYD MLK 'aShVUr.     and let not Hezekiah make you trust unto Jehovah, saying, Jehovah doth certainly deliver us, this city is not given into the hand of the king of Asshur.     et non vobis tribuat fiduciam Ezechias super Domino dicens eruens liberabit nos Dominus non dabitur civitas ista in manu regis Assyriorum
 
16.    Don't listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, 'Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;     Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;     אל־תשמעו 
אל־חזקיהו  כי  כה
אמר  המלך  אשור
עשו־אתי  ברכה  וצאו
אלי  ואכלו
איש־גפנו  ואיש
תאנתו  ושתו  איש
מי־בורו׃
    'aL-ThShM'yV 'aL-ChZQYHV KY KH 'aMUr HMLK 'aShVUr 'yShV-'aThY BUrKH VTSh'aV 'aLY V'aKLV 'aYSh-GPhNV V'aYSh Th'aNThV VShThV 'aYSh MY-BVUrV.     `Do not hearken unto Hezekiah, for thus said the king of Asshur, Make ye with me a blessing, and come out unto me, and eat ye each of his vine, and each of his fig-tree, and drink ye each the waters of his own well,     nolite audire Ezechiam haec enim dicit rex Assyriorum facite mecum benedictionem et egredimini ad me et comedite unusquisque vineam suam et unusquisque ficum suam et bibite unusquisque aquam cisternae suae
 
17.    until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.     Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.     עד־באי  ולקחתי 
אתכם  אל־ארץ
כארצכם  ארץ  דגן
ותירוש  ארץ  לחם
וכרמים׃
    'yD-B'aY VLQChThY 'aThKM 'aL-'aUrTSh K'aUrTShKM 'aUrTSh DGN VThYUrVSh 'aUrTSh LChM VKUrMYM.     till my coming in, and I have taken you unto a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards;     donec veniam et tollam vos ad terram quae est ut terra vestra terram frumenti et vini terram panum et vinearum
 
18.    Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, "Yahweh will deliver us." Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?     Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?     פן־יסית  אתכם 
חזקיהו  לאמר  יהוה
יצילנו  ההצילו
אלהי  הגוים  איש
את־ארצו  מיד  מלך
אשור׃
    PhN-YSYTh 'aThKM ChZQYHV L'aMUr YHVH YTShYLNV HHTShYLV 'aLHY HGVYM 'aYSh 'aTh-'aUrTShV MYD MLK 'aShVUr.     lest Hezekiah doth persuade you, saying, Jehovah doth deliver us. `Have the gods of the nations delivered each his land out of the hand of the king of Asshur?     ne conturbet vos Ezechias dicens Dominus liberabit nos numquid liberaverunt dii gentium unusquisque terram suam de manu regis Assyriorum
 
19.    Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?     Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?     איה  אלהי  חמת 
וארפד  איה  אלהי
ספרוים  וכי־הצילו
את־שמרון  מידי׃
    'aYH 'aLHY ChMTh V'aUrPhD 'aYH 'aLHY SPhUrVYM VKY-HTShYLV 'aTh-ShMUrVN MYDY.     Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where the gods of Sepharvaim, that they have delivered Samaria out of my hand?     ubi est deus Emath et Arfad ubi est deus Seffarvaim numquid liberaverunt Samariam de manu mea
 
20.    Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Yahweh should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'"     Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?     מי  בכל־אלהי 
הארצות  האלה
אשר־הצילו  את־ארצם
מידי  כי־יציל  יהוה
את־ירושלם  מידי׃
    MY BKL-'aLHY H'aUrTShVTh H'aLH 'aShUr-HTShYLV 'aTh-'aUrTShM MYDY KY-YTShYL YHVH 'aTh-YUrVShLM MYDY.     Who among all the gods of these lands are they who have delivered their land out of my hand, that Jehovah doth deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?`     quis est ex omnibus diis terrarum istarum qui eruerit terram suam de manu mea ut eruat Dominus Hierusalem de manu mea
 
21.    But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king's commandment was, "Don't answer him."     But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.     ויחרישו  ולא־ענו 
אתו  דבר  כי־מצות
המלך  היא  לאמר  לא
תענהו׃
    VYChUrYShV VL'a-'yNV 'aThV DBUr KY-MTShVTh HMLK HY'a L'aMUr L'a Th'yNHV.     And they keep silent, and have not answered him a word, for a command of the king is, saying, `Do not answer him.`     et siluerunt et non responderunt ei verbum mandaverat enim rex dicens ne respondeatis ei
 
22.    Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.     Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.     ויבא  אליקים 
בן־חלקיהו
אשר־על־הבית  ושבנא
הסופר  ויואח
בן־אסף  המזכיר
אל־חזקיהו  קרועי
בגדים  ויגידו  לו
את  דברי  רב־שקה׃
    VYB'a 'aLYQYM BN-ChLQYHV 'aShUr-'yL-HBYTh VShBN'a HSVPhUr VYV'aCh BN-'aSPh HMZKYUr 'aL-ChZQYHV QUrV'yY BGDYM VYGYDV LV 'aTh DBUrY UrB-ShQH.     And Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who is over the house, cometh in, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer, unto Hezekiah with rent garments, and they declare to him the words of Rabshakeh.     et ingressus est Eliachim filius Helciae qui erat super domum et Sobna scriba et Ioae filius Asaph a commentariis ad Ezechiam scissis vestibus et nuntiaverunt ei verba Rabsacis
