| 1. | It happened in the fourth year of king Darius that the word of Yahweh came to Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, the month of Chislev. | And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, even in Chisleu; |

| 2. | The people of Bethel sent Sharezer and Regem Melech, and their men, to entreat Yahweh's favor, | When they had sent unto the house of God Sherezer and Regemmelech, and their men, to pray before the LORD, |
וישלח בית־אל שר־אצר ורגם מלך ואנשיו לחלות את־פני יהוה׃ |
VYShLCh BYTh-'aL ShUr-'aTShUr VUrGM MLK V'aNShYV LChLVTh 'aTh-PhNY YHVH. | And Beth-El sendeth Sherezer and Regem-Melech, and its men, to appease the face of Jehovah, | et miserunt ad domum Dei Sarasar et Rogomelech et viri qui erant cum eo ad deprecandam faciem Domini | |||||
| 3. | and to speak to the priests of the house of Yahweh of Armies, and to the prophets, saying, "Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?" | And to speak unto the priests which were in the house of the LORD of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years? |
לאמר אל־הכהנים אשר לבית־יהוה צבאות ואל־הנביאים לאמר האבכה בחדש החמשי הנזר כאשר עשיתי זה כמה שנים׃ |
L'aMUr 'aL-HKHNYM 'aShUr LBYTh-YHVH TShB'aVTh V'aL-HNBY'aYM L'aMUr H'aBKH BChDSh HChMShY HNZUr K'aShUr 'yShYThY ZH KMH ShNYM. | speaking unto the priests who are at the house of Jehovah of Hosts, and unto the prophets, saying, `Do I weep in the fifth month -- being separated -- as I have done these so many years?` | ut dicerent sacerdotibus domus Domini exercituum et prophetis loquentes numquid flendum mihi est in mense quinto vel sanctificare me debeo sicuti feci iam multis annis | |||||

| 5. | "Speak to all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, 'When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and in the seventh month for these seventy years, did you at all fast to me, really to me? | Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me? |
אמר אל־כל־עם הארץ ואל־הכהנים לאמר כי־צמתם וספוד בחמישי ובשביעי וזה שבעים שנה הצום צמתני אני׃ |

| 6. | When you eat, and when you drink, don't you eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves? | And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves? |
וכי תאכלו וכי תשתו הלוא אתם האכלים ואתם השתים׃ |
VKY Th'aKLV VKY ThShThV HLV'a 'aThM H'aKLYM V'aThM HShThYM. | When ye fasted with mourning in the fifth and in the seventh months -- even these seventy years -- did ye keep the fast to Me -- Me? And when ye eat, and when ye drink, is it not ye who are eating, and ye who are drinking? | et cum comedistis et cum bibistis numquid non vobis comedistis et vobismet ipsis bibistis | |||||
| 7. | Aren't these the words which Yahweh proclaimed by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and its cities around her, and the South and the lowland were inhabited?'" | Should ye not hear the words which the LORD hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain? |
הלוא את־הדברים אשר קרא יהוה ביד הנביאים הראשנים בהיות ירושלם ישבת ושלוה ועריה סביבתיה והנגב והשפלה ישב׃ |
HLV'a 'aTh-HDBUrYM 'aShUr QUr'a YHVH BYD HNBY'aYM HUr'aShNYM BHYVTh YUrVShLM YShBTh VShLVH V'yUrYH SBYBThYH VHNGB VHShPhLH YShB. | `Are not these the words that Jehovah proclaimed by the hand of the former prophets, in Jerusalem`s being inhabited, and in safety, and its cities round about it, and the south and the plain -- abiding?` | numquid non sunt verba quae locutus est Dominus in manu prophetarum priorum cum adhuc Hierusalem habitaretur et esset opulenta ipsa et urbes in circuitu eius et ad austrum et in campestribus habitaretur | |||||

| 9. | "Thus has Yahweh of Armies spoken, saying, 'Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother. | Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother: |
כה אמר יהוה צבאות לאמר משפט אמת שפטו וחסד ורחמים עשו איש את־ אחיו׃ |
KH 'aMUr YHVH TShB'aVTh L'aMUr MShPhT 'aMTh ShPhTV VChSD VUrChMYM 'yShV 'aYSh 'aTh- 'aChYV. | `Thus spake Jehovah of Hosts, saying: True judgment judge ye, And kindness and mercy do one with another. | haec ait Dominus exercituum dicens iudicium verum iudicate et misericordiam et miserationes facite unusquisque cum fratre suo | |||||
| 10. | Don't oppress the widow, nor the fatherless, the foreigner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.' | And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. |
ואלמנה ויתום גר ועני אל־תעשקו ורעת איש אחיו אל־תחשבו בלבבכם׃ |
V'aLMNH VYThVM GUr V'yNY 'aL-Th'yShQV VUr'yTh 'aYSh 'aChYV 'aL-ThChShBV BLBBKM. | And widow, and fatherless, Sojourner, and poor, ye do not oppress, And the calamity of one another ye do not devise in your heart. | et viduam et pupillum et advenam et pauperem nolite calumniari et malum vir fratri suo non cogitet in corde suo | |||||
| 11. | But they refused to listen, and turned their backs, and stopped their ears, that they might not hear. | But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. |
וימאנו להקשיב ויתנו כתף סררת ואזניהם הכבידו משמוע׃ |
VYM'aNV LHQShYB VYThNV KThPh SUrUrTh V'aZNYHM HKBYDV MShMV'y. | And they refuse to attend, And they give a refractory shoulder, And their ears have made heavy against hearing. | et noluerunt adtendere et verterunt scapulam recedentem et aures suas adgravaverunt ne audirent | |||||
| 12. | Yes, they made their hearts as hard as flint, lest they might hear the law, and the words which Yahweh of Armies had sent by his Spirit by the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from Yahweh of Armies. | Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts. |
ולבם שמו שמיר משמוע את־התורה ואת־הדברים אשר שלח יהוה צבאות ברוחו ביד הנביאים הראשנים ויהי קצף גדול מאת יהוה צבאות׃ |
VLBM ShMV ShMYUr MShMV'y 'aTh-HThVUrH V'aTh-HDBUrYM 'aShUr ShLCh YHVH TShB'aVTh BUrVChV BYD HNBY'aYM HUr'aShNYM VYHY QTShPh GDVL M'aTh YHVH TShB'aVTh. | And their heart they have made adamant, Against hearing the law, and the words, That Jehovah of Hosts sent by His Spirit, By the hand of the former prophets, And their is great wrath from Jehovah of Hosts. | et cor suum posuerunt adamantem ne audirent legem et verba quae misit Dominus exercituum in spiritu suo per manum prophetarum priorum et facta est indignatio magna a Domino exercituum | |||||
| 13. | It has come to pass that, as he called, and they refused to listen, so they will call, and I will not listen," said Yahweh of Armies; | Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts: |
ויהי כאשר־קרא ולא שמעו כן יקראו ולא אשמע אמר יהוה צבאות׃ |
VYHY K'aShUr-QUr'a VL'a ShM'yV KN YQUr'aV VL'a 'aShM'y 'aMUr YHVH TShB'aVTh. | And it cometh to pass, as He called, And they have not hearkened, So do they call, and I do not hearken, Said Jehovah of Hosts. | et factum est sicut locutus est et non audierunt sic clamabunt et non exaudiam dicit Dominus exercituum | |||||
| 14. | "but I will scatter them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they have not known. Thus the land was desolate after them, so that no man passed through nor returned: for they made the pleasant land desolate." | But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate. |
ואסערם על כל־הגוים אשר לא־ידעום והארץ נשמה אחריהם מעבר ומשב וישימו ארץ־חמדה לשמה׃ |
V'aS'yUrM 'yL KL-HGVYM 'aShUr L'a-YD'yVM VH'aUrTSh NShMH 'aChUrYHM M'yBUr VMShB VYShYMV 'aUrTSh-ChMDH LShMH. | And I toss them on all the nations, That they have not known, The land hath been desolate behind them, Of any passing by and turning back, And they set a desirable land for a desolation! | et dispersi eos per omnia regna quae nesciunt et terra desolata est ab eis eo quod non esset transiens et revertens et posuerunt terram desiderabilem in desertum | |||||
