1.    Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking,     Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,     αποθεμενοι ουν πασαν κακιαν και παντα δολον και υποκρισεις και φθονους και πασας καταλαλιας     Having put aside, then, all evil, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envyings, and all evil speakings,     deponentes igitur omnem malitiam et omnem dolum et simulationes et invidias et omnes detractiones
 
2.    as newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the Word, that you may grow thereby,     As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:     ως αρτιγεννητα βρεφη το λογικον αδολον γαλα επιποθησατε ινα εν αυτω αυξηθητε εισ σωτηριαν     as new-born babes the word`s pure milk desire ye, that in it ye may grow,     sicut modo geniti infantes rationale sine dolo lac concupiscite ut in eo crescatis in salutem
 
3.    if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious:     If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.     ει εγευσασθε οτι χρηστος ο κυριος     if so be ye did taste that the Lord is gracious,     si gustastis quoniam dulcis Dominus
 
4.    coming to him, a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious.     To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,     προς ον προσερχομενοι λιθον ζωντα υπο ανθρωπων μεν αποδεδοκιμασμενον παρα δε θεω εκλεκτον εντιμον     to whom coming -- a living stone -- by men, indeed, having been disapproved of, but with God choice, precious,     ad quem accedentes lapidem vivum ab hominibus quidem reprobatum a Deo autem electum honorificatum
 
5.    You also, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.     Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.     και αυτοι ως λιθοι ζωντες οικοδομεισθε οικος πνευματικος εισ ιερατευμα αγιον ανενεγκαι πνευματικας θυσιας ευπροσδεκτους [τω] θεω δια ιησου χριστου     and ye yourselves, as living stones, are built up, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.     et ipsi tamquam lapides vivi superaedificamini domus spiritalis sacerdotium sanctum offerre spiritales hostias acceptabiles Deo per Iesum Christum
 
6.    Because it is contained in Scripture, "Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, chosen, and precious: He who believes in him will not be disappointed."{Isaiah 28:16}     Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.     διοτι  περιεχει εν γραφη ιδου τιθημι εν σιων λιθον ακρογωνιαιον εκλεκτον εντιμον και ο πιστευων επ αυτω ου μη καταισχυνθη     Wherefore, also, it is contained in the Writing: `Lo, I lay in Zion a chief corner-stone, choice, precious, and he who is believing on him may not be put to shame;`     propter quod continet in scriptura ecce pono in Sion lapidem summum angularem electum pretiosum et qui crediderit in eo non confundetur
 
7.    For you who believe therefore is the honor, but for those who are disobedient, "The stone which the builders rejected, has become the chief cornerstone,"{Psalm 118:22}     Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,     υμιν ουν η τιμη τοις πιστευουσιν απιστουσιν δε λιθοσ ον απεδοκιμασαν οι οικοδομουντες ουτος εγενηθη εις κεφαλην γωνιας     to you, then, who are believing is the preciousness; and to the unbelieving, a stone that the builders disapproved of, this one did become for the head of a corner,     vobis igitur honor credentibus non credentibus autem lapis quem reprobaverunt aedificantes hic factus est in caput anguli
 
8.    and, "a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense."{Isaiah 8:14} For they stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.     And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.     και λιθος προσκομματος και πετρα σκανδαλου οι προσκοπτουσιν τω λογω απειθουντες εις ο και ετεθησαν     and a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence -- who are stumbling at the word, being unbelieving, -- to which also they were set;     et lapis offensionis et petra scandali qui offendunt verbo nec credunt in quod et positi sunt
 
9.    But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:     But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:     υμεις δε γενος εκλεκτον βασιλειον ιερατευμα εθνος αγιον λαος εις περιποιησιν οπως τας αρετας εξαγγειλητε του εκ σκοτους υμας καλεσαντος εις το θαυμαστον αυτου φως     and ye are a choice race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people acquired, that the excellences ye may shew forth of Him who out of darkness did call you to His wondrous light;     vos autem genus electum regale sacerdotium gens sancta populus adquisitionis ut virtutes adnuntietis eius qui de tenebris vos vocavit in admirabile lumen suum
 
10.    who in time past were no people, but now are God's people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.     Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.     οι ποτε ου λαος νυν δε λαος θεου οι ουκ ηλεημενοι νυν δε ελεηθεντες     who were once not a people, and are now the people of God; who had not found kindness, and now have found kindness.     qui aliquando non populus nunc autem populus Dei qui non consecuti misericordiam nunc autem misericordiam consecuti
 
11.    Beloved, I beg you as foreigners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;     Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;     αγαπητοι παρακαλω ως παροικους και παρεπιδημους απεχεσθαι των σαρκικων επιθυμιων αιτινες στρατευονται κατα της ψυχης     Beloved, I call upon you, as strangers and sojourners, to keep from the fleshly desires, that war against the soul,     carissimi obsecro tamquam advenas et peregrinos abstinere vos a carnalibus desideriis quae militant adversus animam
 
12.    having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they see, glorify God in the day of visitation.     Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.     την αναστροφην υμων  εν τοις εθνεσιν εχοντεσ καλην ινα εν ω καταλαλουσιν υμων ως κακοποιων εκ των καλων εργων εποπτευοντεσ δοξασωσιν τον θεον εν ημερα επισκοπης     having your behaviour among the nations right, that in that which they speak against you as evil-doers, of the good works having beheld, they may glorify God in a day of inspection.     conversationem vestram inter gentes habentes bonam ut in eo quod detractant de vobis tamquam de malefactoribus ex bonis operibus considerantes glorificent Deum in die visitationis
 
13.    Therefore subject yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether to the king, as supreme;     Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;     υποταγητε παση ανθρωπινη κτισει δια τον κυριον ειτε βασιλει ως υπερεχοντι     Be subject, then, to every human creation, because of the Lord, whether to a king, as the highest,     subiecti estote omni humanae creaturae propter Dominum sive regi quasi praecellenti
 
14.    or to governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evildoers and for praise to those who do well.     Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.     ειτε ηγεμοσιν ως δι αυτου πεμπομενοις εις εκδικησιν κακοποιων επαινον δε αγαθοποιων     whether to governors, as to those sent through him, for punishment, indeed, of evil-doers, and a praise of those doing good;     sive ducibus tamquam ab eo missis ad vindictam malefactorum laudem vero bonorum
 
15.    For this is the will of God, that by well-doing you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:     For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:     οτι ουτως εστιν το θελημα του θεου αγαθοποιουντας φιμουν την των αφρονων ανθρωπων αγνωσιαν     because, so is the will of God, doing good, to put to silence the ignorance of the foolish men;     quia sic est voluntas Dei ut benefacientes obmutescere faciatis inprudentium hominum ignorantiam
 
16.    as free, and not using your freedom for a cloak of wickedness, but as bondservants of God.     As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.     ως ελευθεροι και μη ως επικαλυμμα εχοντες της κακιας την ελευθεριαν αλλ ως θεου δουλοι     as free, and not having the freedom as the cloak of the evil, but as servants of God;     quasi liberi et non quasi velamen habentes malitiae libertatem sed sicut servi Dei
 
17.    Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.     Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.     παντας τιμησατε την αδελφοτητα αγαπατε τον θεον φοβεισθε τον βασιλεα τιματε     to all give ye honour; the brotherhood love ye; God fear ye; the king honour ye.     omnes honorate fraternitatem diligite Deum timete regem honorificate
 
18.    Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the wicked.     Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.     οι οικεται υποτασσομενοι εν παντι φοβω τοις δεσποταις ου μονον τοις αγαθοις και επιεικεσιν αλλα και τοις σκολιοις     The domestics! be subjecting yourselves in all fear to the masters, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the cross;     servi subditi in omni timore dominis non tantum bonis et modestis sed etiam discolis
 
19.    For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God.     For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.     τουτο γαρ χαρις ει δια συνειδησιν θεου υποφερει τις λυπας πασχων αδικως     for this is gracious, if because of conscience toward God any one doth endure sorrows, suffering unrighteously;     haec est enim gratia si propter conscientiam Dei sustinet quis tristitias patiens iniuste
 
20.    For what glory is it if, when you sin, you patiently endure beating? But if, when you do well, you patiently endure suffering, this is commendable with God.     For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.     ποιον γαρ κλεος ει αμαρτανοντες και κολαφιζομενοι υπομενειτε αλλ ει αγαθοποιουντες και πασχοντες υπομενειτε τουτο χαρις παρα θεω     for what renown is it, if sinning and being buffeted, ye do endure it? but if, doing good and suffering for it, ye do endure, this is gracious with God,     quae enim gloria est si peccantes et colaphizati suffertis sed si benefacientes et patientes sustinetis haec est gratia apud Deum
 
21.    For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you{TR reads "us" instead of "you"} an example, that you should follow his steps,     For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:     εις τουτο γαρ εκληθητε οτι και χριστος επαθεν υπερ υμων υμιν υπολιμπανων υπογραμμον ινα επακολουθησητε τοις ιχνεσιν αυτου     for to this ye were called, because Christ also did suffer for you, leaving to you an example, that ye may follow his steps,     in hoc enim vocati estis quia et Christus passus est pro vobis vobis relinquens exemplum ut sequamini vestigia eius
 
22.    who did not sin, "neither was deceit found in his mouth."{Isaiah 53:9}     Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:     ος αμαρτιαν ουκ εποιησεν ουδε ευρεθη δολος εν τω στοματι αυτου     who did not commit sin, nor was guile found in his mouth,     qui peccatum non fecit nec inventus est dolus in ore ipsius
 
23.    Who, when he was cursed, didn't curse back. When he suffered, didn't threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously;     Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:     ος λοιδορουμενος ουκ αντελοιδορει πασχων ουκ ηπειλει παρεδιδου δε τω κρινοντι δικαιως     who being reviled -- was not reviling again, suffering -- was not threatening, and was committing himself to Him who is judging righteously,     qui cum malediceretur non maledicebat cum pateretur non comminabatur tradebat autem iudicanti se iniuste

25.    For you were going astray like sheep; but now have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer{"Overseer" is from the Greek episkopon, which can mean overseer, curator, guardian, or superintendent.} of your souls.     For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.     ητε γαρ ως προβατα πλανωμενοι αλλα επεστραφητε νυν επι τον ποιμενα και επισκοπον των ψυχων υμων     for ye were as sheep going astray, but ye turned back now to the shepherd and overseer of your souls.     eratis enim sicut oves errantes sed conversi estis nunc ad pastorem et episcopum animarum vestrarum
