1.    Now it fell on a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, "Come, and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on the other side." But he didn't tell his father.     Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.     ויהי  היום  ויאמר

    VYHY HYVM VY'aMUr YVNThN BN-Sh'aVL 'aL-HN'yUr NSh'a KLYV LKH VN'yBUrH 'aL- MTShB PhLShThYM 'aShUr M'yBUr HLZ VL'aBYV L'a HGYD.     And the day cometh that Jonathan son of Saul saith unto the young man bearing his weapons, `Come, and we pass over unto the station of the Philistines, which is on the other side of this;` and to his father he hath not declared it.     et accidit quadam die ut diceret Ionathan filius Saul ad adulescentem armigerum suum veni et transeamus ad stationem Philisthim quae est trans locum illum patri autem suo hoc ipsum non indicavit
 
2.    Saul abode in the uttermost part of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people who were with him were about six hundred men;     And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about six hundred men;     ושאול  יושב  בקצה

    VSh'aVL YVShB BQTShH HGB'yH ThChTh HUrMVN 'aShUr BMGUrVN VH'yM 'aShUr 'yMV KShSh M'aVTh 'aYSh.     And Saul is abiding at the extremity of Gibeah, under the pomegranate which is in Migron, and the people who are with him, about six hundred men,     porro Saul morabatur in extrema parte Gabaa sub malogranato quae erat in Magron et erat populus cum eo quasi sescentorum virorum
 
3.    and Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the priest of Yahweh in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. The people didn't know that Jonathan was gone.     And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD's priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.     ואחיה  בן־אחטוב

    V'aChYH BN-'aChTVB 'aChY 'aYKBVD BN-PhYNChS BN-'yLY KHN YHVH BShLV NSh'a 'aPhVD VH'yM L'a YD'y KY HLK YVNThN.     and Ahiah, son of Ahitub, brother of I-Chabod, son of Phinehas son of Eli priest of Jehovah in Shiloh, bearing an ephod; and the people knew not that Jonathan hath gone.     et Ahias filius Achitob fratris Ichabod filii Finees qui ortus fuerat ex Heli sacerdote Domini in Silo portabat ephod sed et populus ignorabat quod isset Ionathan
 
4.    Between the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines' garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side, and a rocky crag on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.     And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines' garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.     ובין  המעברות  אשר

5.    The one crag rose up on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba.     The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.     השן  האחד  מצוק

6.    Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, "Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that Yahweh will work for us; for there is no restraint on Yahweh to save by many or by few."     And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.     ויאמר  יהונתן 
אל־הנער  נשא  כליו
לכה  ונעברה  אל־מצב
הערלים  האלה  אולי
יעשה  יהוה  לנו  כי
אין  ליהוה  מעצור

    VY'aMUr YHVNThN 'aL-HN'yUr NSh'a KLYV LKH VN'yBUrH 'aL-MTShB H'yUrLYM H'aLH 'aVLY Y'yShH YHVH LNV KY 'aYN LYHVH M'yTShVUr LHVShY'y BUrB 'aV BM'yT.     And Jonathan saith unto the young man bearing his weapons, `Come, and we pass over unto the station of these uncircumcised; it may be Jehovah doth work for us, for there is no restraint to Jehovah to save by many or by few.`     dixit autem Ionathan ad adulescentem armigerum suum veni transeamus ad stationem incircumcisorum horum si forte faciat Dominus pro nobis quia non est Domino difficile salvare vel in multitudine vel in paucis
 
7.    His armor bearer said to him, "Do all that is in your heart. Turn and, behold, I am with you according to your heart."     And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.     ויאמר  לו  נשא  כליו 
עשה  כל־אשר  בלבבך
נטה  לך  הנני  עמך
כלבבך׃
    VY'aMUr LV NSh'a KLYV 'yShH KL-'aShUr BLBBK NTH LK HNNY 'yMK KLBBK.     And the bearer of his weapons saith to him, `Do all that is in thy heart; turn for thee; lo, I am with thee, as thine own heart.`     dixitque ei armiger suus fac omnia quae placent animo tuo perge quo cupis ero tecum ubicumque volueris
 
8.    Then Jonathan said, "Behold, we will pass over to the men, and we will reveal ourselves to them.     Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.     ויאמר  יהונתן  הנה 
אנחנו  עברים

אליהם׃
    VY'aMUr YHVNThN HNH 'aNChNV 'yBUrYM 'aL-H'aNShYM VNGLYNV 'aLYHM.     And Jonathan saith, `Lo, we are passing over unto the men, and are revealed unto them;     et ait Ionathan ecce nos transimus ad viros istos cumque apparuerimus eis
 
9.    If they say thus to us, 'Wait until we come to you!' then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up to them.     If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.     אם־כה  יאמרו  אלינו 
דמו  עד־הגיענו
אליכם  ועמדנו
תחתינו  ולא  נעלה
אליהם׃
    'aM-KH Y'aMUrV 'aLYNV DMV 'yD-HGY'yNV 'aLYKM V'yMDNV ThChThYNV VL'a N'yLH 'aLYHM.     if thus they say unto us, `Stand still till we have come unto you,` then we have stood in our place, and do not go up unto them;     si taliter locuti fuerint ad nos manete donec veniamus ad vos stemus in loco nostro nec ascendamus ad eos
 
10.    But if they say this, 'Come up to us!' then we will go up; for Yahweh has delivered them into our hand. This shall be the sign to us."     But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.     ואם־כה  יאמרו  עלו 
עלינו  ועלינו
כי־נתנם  יהוה
בידנו  וזה־לנו
האות׃
    V'aM-KH Y'aMUrV 'yLV 'yLYNV V'yLYNV KY-NThNM YHVH BYDNV VZH-LNV H'aVTh.     and if thus they say, `Come up against us,` then we have gone up, for Jehovah hath given them into our hand, and this to us is the sign.     si autem dixerint ascendite ad nos ascendamus quia tradidit eos Dominus in manibus nostris hoc erit nobis signum
 
11.    Both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, "Behold, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they had hidden themselves!"     And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.     ויגלו  שניהם 
אל־מצב  פלשתים
ויאמרו  פלשתים  הנה
עברים  יצאים  מן־
החרים  אשר
התחבאו־שם׃
    VYGLV ShNYHM 'aL-MTShB PhLShThYM VY'aMUrV PhLShThYM HNH 'yBUrYM YTSh'aYM MN- HChUrYM 'aShUr HThChB'aV-ShM.     And revealed are both of them unto the station of the Philistines, and the Philistines say, `Lo, Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hid themselves.`     apparuit igitur uterque stationi Philisthinorum dixeruntque Philisthim en Hebraei egrediuntur de cavernis in quibus absconditi fuerant
 
12.    The men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor bearer, and said, "Come up to us, and we will show you something!" Jonathan said to his armor bearer, "Come up after me; for Yahweh has delivered them into the hand of Israel."     And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.     ויענו  אנשי  המצבה 
את־יונתן  ואת־נשא
כליו  ויאמרו  עלו
אלינו  ונודיעה
אתכם  דבר  ויאמר
יונתן  אל־נשא  כליו
עלה  אחרי  כי־נתנם
יהוה  ביד  ישראל׃
    VY'yNV 'aNShY HMTShBH 'aTh-YVNThN V'aTh-NSh'a KLYV VY'aMUrV 'yLV 'aLYNV VNVDY'yH 'aThKM DBUr VY'aMUr YVNThN 'aL-NSh'a KLYV 'yLH 'aChUrY KY-NThNM YHVH BYD YShUr'aL.     And the men of the station answer Jonathan, and the bearer of his weapons, and say, `Come up unto us, and we cause you to know something.` And Jonathan saith unto the bearer of his weapons, `Come up after me, for Jehovah hath given them into the hand of Israel.`     et locuti sunt viri de statione ad Ionathan et ad armigerum eius dixeruntque ascendite ad nos et ostendimus vobis rem et ait Ionathan ad armigerum suum ascendamus sequere me tradidit enim eos Dominus in manu Israhel
 
13.    Jonathan climbed up on his hands and on his feet, and his armor bearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armor bearer killed them after him.     And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him.     ויעל  יונתן 
על־ידיו  ועל־רגליו
ונשא  כליו  אחריו
ויפלו  לפני  יונתן
ונשא  כליו  ממותת
אחריו׃
    VY'yL YVNThN 'yL-YDYV V'yL-UrGLYV VNSh'a KLYV 'aChUrYV VYPhLV LPhNY YVNThN VNSh'a KLYV MMVThTh 'aChUrYV.     And Jonathan goeth up on his hands, and on his feet, and the bearer of his weapons after him; and they fall before Jonathan, and the bearer of his weapons is putting to death after him.     ascendit autem Ionathan reptans manibus et pedibus et armiger eius post eum itaque alii cadebant ante Ionathan alios armiger eius interficiebat sequens eum
 
14.    That first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armor bearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were half a furrow's length in an acre of land.     And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.     ותהי  המכה  הראשנה

    VThHY HMKH HUr'aShNH 'aShUr HKH YVNThN VNSh'a KLYV K'yShUrYM 'aYSh KBChTShY M'yNH TShMD ShDH.     And the first smiting which Jonathan and the bearer of his weapons have smitten is of about twenty men, in about half a furrow of a yoke of a field,     et facta est plaga prima quam percussit Ionathan et armiger eius quasi viginti virorum in media parte iugeri quam par boum in die arare consuevit
 
15.    There was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people; the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled; and the earth quaked: so there was an exceeding great trembling.     And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.     ותהי  חרדה  במחנה 
בשדה  ובכל־העם
המצב  והמשחית  חרדו
גם־המה  ותרגז  הארץ
ותהי  לחרדת  אלהים׃
    VThHY ChUrDH BMChNH BShDH VBKL-H'yM HMTShB VHMShChYTh ChUrDV GM-HMH VThUrGZ H'aUrTSh VThHY LChUrDTh 'aLHYM.     and there is a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people, the station and the destroyers have trembled -- even they, and the earth shaketh, and it becometh a trembling of God.     et factum est miraculum in castris per agros sed et omnis populus stationis eorum qui ierant ad praedandum obstipuit et conturbata est terra et accidit quasi miraculum a Deo
 
16.    The watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and behold, the multitude melted away, and they went [here] and there.     And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.     ויראו  הצפים  לשאול 
בגבעת  בנימן  והנה
ההמון  נמוג  וילך
והלם׃
    VYUr'aV HTShPhYM LSh'aVL BGB'yTh BNYMN VHNH HHMVN NMVG VYLK VHLM.     And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin see, and lo, the multitude hath melted away, and it goeth on, and is beaten down.     et respexerunt speculatores Saul qui erant in Gabaa Beniamin et ecce multitudo prostrata et huc illucque diffugiens
 
17.    Then said Saul to the people who were with him, "Count now, and see who is missing from us." When they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there.     Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.     ויאמר  שאול  לעם 
אשר  אתו  פקדו־נא
וראו  מי  הלך  מעמנו
ויפקדו  והנה  אין
יונתן  ונשא  כליו׃
    VY'aMUr Sh'aVL L'yM 'aShUr 'aThV PhQDV-N'a VUr'aV MY HLK M'yMNV VYPhQDV VHNH 'aYN YVNThN VNSh'a KLYV.     And Saul saith to the people who are with him, `Inspect, I pray you, and see; who hath gone from us?` and they inspect, and lo, Jonathan and the bearer of his weapons are not.     et ait Saul populo qui erat cum eo requirite et videte quis abierit ex nobis cumque requisissent reppertum est non adesse Ionathan et armigerum eius
 
18.    Saul said to Ahijah, "Bring the ark of God here." For the ark of God was [there] at that time with the children of Israel.     And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.     ויאמר  שאול  לאחיה 
הגישה  ארון  האלהים
כי־היה  ארון
האלהים  ביום  ההוא
ובני  ישראל׃
    VY'aMUr Sh'aVL L'aChYH HGYShH 'aUrVN H'aLHYM KY-HYH 'aUrVN H'aLHYM BYVM HHV'a VBNY YShUr'aL.     And Saul saith to Ahiah, `Bring nigh the ark of God;` for the ark of God hath been on that day with the sons of Israel.     et ait Saul ad Ahiam adplica arcam Dei erat enim ibi arca Dei in die illa cum filiis Israhel
 
19.    It happened, while Saul talked to the priest, that the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said to the priest, "Withdraw your hand!"     And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.     ויהי  עד  דבר  שאול 
אל־הכהן  וההמון
אשר  במחנה  פלשתים
וילך  הלוך  ורב
ויאמר  שאול
אל־הכהן  אסף  ידך׃
    VYHY 'yD DBUr Sh'aVL 'aL-HKHN VHHMVN 'aShUr BMChNH PhLShThYM VYLK HLVK VUrB VY'aMUr Sh'aVL 'aL-HKHN 'aSPh YDK.     And it cometh to pass, while Saul spake unto the priest, that the noise which is in the camp of the Philistines goeth on, going on and becoming great, and Saul saith unto the priest, `Remove thy hand.`     cumque loqueretur Saul ad sacerdotem tumultus magnus exortus est in castris Philisthinorum crescebatque paulatim et clarius reboabat et ait Saul ad sacerdotem contrahe manum tuam
 
20.    Saul and all the people who were with him were gathered together, and came to the battle: and behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, [and there was] a very great confusion.     And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.     ויזעק  שאול 
וכל־העם  אשר  אתו
ויבאו  עד־המלחמה
והנה  היתה  חרב  איש
ברעהו  מהומה  גדולה
מאד׃
    VYZ'yQ Sh'aVL VKL-H'yM 'aShUr 'aThV VYB'aV 'yD-HMLChMH VHNH HYThH ChUrB 'aYSh BUr'yHV MHVMH GDVLH M'aD.     And Saul is called, and all the people who are with him, and they come in unto the battle, and, lo, the sword of each hath been against his neighbour -- a very great destruction.     conclamavit ergo Saul et omnis populus qui erat cum eo et venerunt usque ad locum certaminis et ecce versus fuerat gladius uniuscuiusque ad proximum suum et caedes magna nimis
 
21.    Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistines as before, and who went up with them into the camp, [from the country] all around, even they also [turned] to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.     Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.     והעברים  היו 
לפלשתים  כאתמול
שלשום  אשר  עלו  עמם
במחנה  סביב  וגם־
המה  להיות
עם־ישראל  אשר
עם־שאול  ויונתן׃
    VH'yBUrYM HYV LPhLShThYM K'aThMVL ShLShVM 'aShUr 'yLV 'yMM BMChNH SBYB VGM- HMH LHYVTh 'yM-YShUr'aL 'aShUr 'yM-Sh'aVL VYVNThN.     And the Hebrews who have been for the Philistines as heretofore, who had gone up with them into the camp, have turned round, even they, to be with Israel who are with Saul and Jonathan,     sed et Hebraei qui fuerant cum Philisthim heri et nudius tertius ascenderantque cum eis in castris reversi sunt ut essent cum Israhele qui erant cum Saul et Ionathan
 
22.    Likewise all the men of Israel who had hid themselves in the hill country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.     Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.     וכל  איש  ישראל 
המתחבאים
בהר־אפרים  שמעו
כי־נסו  פלשתים
וידבקו  גם־המה
אחריהם  במלחמה׃
    VKL 'aYSh YShUr'aL HMThChB'aYM BHUr-'aPhUrYM ShM'yV KY-NSV PhLShThYM VYDBQV GM-HMH 'aChUrYHM BMLChMH.     and all the men of Israel, who are hiding themselves in the hill-country of Ephraim, have heard that the Philistines have fled, and they pursue -- even they -- after them in battle.     omnes quoque Israhelitae qui se absconderant in monte Ephraim audientes quod fugissent Philisthim sociaverunt se cum suis in proelio
 
23.    So Yahweh saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over by Beth Aven.     So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.     ויושע  יהוה  ביום 
ההוא  את־ישראל
והמלחמה  עברה
את־בית  און׃
    VYVSh'y YHVH BYVM HHV'a 'aTh-YShUr'aL VHMLChMH 'yBUrH 'aTh-BYTh 'aVN.     And Jehovah saveth Israel on that day, and the battle hath passed over to Beth-Aven.     et salvavit Dominus in die illa Israhel pugna autem pervenit usque Bethaven
 
24.    The men of Israel were distressed that day; for Saul had adjured the people, saying, "Cursed is the man who eats any food until it is evening, and I am avenged of my enemies." So none of the people tasted food.     And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.     ואיש־ישראל  נגש 
ביום  ההוא  ויאל
שאול  את־העם  לאמר
ארור  האיש  אשר־
יאכל  לחם  עד־הערב
ונקמתי  מאיבי  ולא
טעם  כל־העם  לחם׃
    V'aYSh-YShUr'aL NGSh BYVM HHV'a VY'aL Sh'aVL 'aTh-H'yM L'aMUr 'aUrVUr H'aYSh 'aShUr- Y'aKL LChM 'yD-H'yUrB VNQMThY M'aYBY VL'a T'yM KL-H'yM LChM.     And the men of Israel have been distressed on that day, and Saul adjureth the people, saying, `Cursed is the man who eateth food till the evening, and I have been avenged of mine enemies;` and none of the people hath tasted food.     et vir Israhel sociatus sibi est in die illa adiuravit autem Saul populum dicens maledictus vir qui comederit panem usque ad vesperam donec ulciscar de inimicis meis et non manducavit universus populus panem
 
25.    All the people came into the forest; and there was honey on the ground.     And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.     וכל־הארץ  באו  ביער 
ויהי  דבש  על־פני
השדה׃
    VKL-H'aUrTSh B'aV BY'yUr VYHY DBSh 'yL-PhNY HShDH.     And all they of the land have come into a forest, and there is honey on the face of the field;     omneque terrae vulgus venit in saltum in quo erat mel super faciem agri
 
26.    When the people were come to the forest, behold, the honey dropped: but no man put his hand to his mouth; for the people feared the oath.     And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.     ויבא  העם  אל־היער 
והנה  הלך  דבש
ואין־משיג  ידו
אל־פיו  כי־ירא  העם
את־השבעה׃

27.    But Jonathan didn't hear when his father commanded the people with the oath: therefore he put forth the end of the rod who was in his hand, and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.     But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.     ויונתן  לא־שמע

28.    Then one of the people answered, and said, "Your father directly commanded the people with an oath, saying, 'Cursed is the man who eats food this day.'" The people were faint.     Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. 29.    Then Jonathan said, "My father has troubled the land. 30.    How much more, if perhaps the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found? For now has there been no great slaughter among the Philistines."     How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?     אף  כי  לוא  אכל  אכל

33.    Then they told Saul, saying, "Behold, the people are sinning against Yahweh, in that they eat meat with the blood." He said, "You have dealt treacherously. Roll a large stone to me this day!"     Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.     ויגידו  לשאול  לאמר

34.    Saul said, "Disperse yourselves among the people, and tell them, 'Bring me here every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and kill them here, and eat; and don't sin against Yahweh in eating meat with the blood.'" All the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and killed them there.     And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.     ויאמר  שאול  פצו

35.    Saul built an altar to Yahweh. This was the first altar that he built to Yahweh.     And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.     ויבן  שאול  מזבח

לבנות  מזבח  ליהוה׃
    VYBN Sh'aVL MZBCh LYHVH 'aThV HChL LBNVTh MZBCh LYHVH.     And Saul buildeth an alter to Jehovah; with it he hath begun to build altars to Jehovah.     aedificavit autem Saul altare Domini tuncque primum coepit aedificare altare Domini
 
36.    Saul said, "Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and take spoil among them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them." They said, "Do whatever seems good to you." Then the priest said, "Let us draw near here to God."     And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.     ויאמר  שאול  נרדה

הבקר  ולא־  נשאר

37.    Saul asked counsel of God, "Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you deliver them into the hand of Israel?" But he didn't answer him that day.     And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.     וישאל  שאול  באלהים

38.    Saul said, "Draw near here, all you chiefs of the people; and know and see in which this sin has been this day.     And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.     ויאמר  שאול  גשו

39.    For, as Yahweh lives, who saves Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die." But there was not a man among all the people who answered him.     For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.     כי  חי־יהוה  המושיע

40.    Then said he to all Israel, "You be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side." The people said to Saul, "Do what seems good to you."     Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.     ויאמר  אל־כל־ישראל 
אתם  תהיו  לעבר  אחד
ואני  ויונתן  בני

    VY'aMUr 'aL-KL-YShUr'aL 'aThM ThHYV L'yBUr 'aChD V'aNY VYVNThN BNY NHYH L'yBUr 'aChD VY'aMUrV H'yM 'aL-Sh'aVL HTVB B'yYNYK 'yShH.     And he saith unto all Israel, `Ye -- ye are on one side, and I and Jonathan my son are on another side;` and the people say unto Saul, `That which is good in thine eyes do.`     et ait ad universum Israhel separamini vos in partem unam et ego cum Ionathan filio meo ero in parte una respondit populus ad Saul quod bonum videtur in oculis tuis fac
 
41.    Therefore Saul said to Yahweh, the God of Israel, "Show the right." Jonathan and Saul were chosen; but the people escaped.     Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.     ויאמר  שאול

42.    Saul said, "Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son." Jonathan was selected.     And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.     ויאמר  שאול  הפילו

43.    Then Saul said to Jonathan, "Tell me what you have done!" Jonathan told him, and said, "I certainly did taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand; and behold, I must die."     Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.     ויאמר  שאול

44.    Saul said, "God do so and more also; for you shall surely die, Jonathan."     And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.     ויאמר  שאול

45.    The people said to Saul, "Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As Yahweh lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he has worked with God this day!" So the people rescued Jonathan, that he didn't die.     And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.     ויאמר  העם  אל־שאול

47.    Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and wherever he turned himself, he put [them] to the worse.     So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them.     ושאול  לכד  המלוכה
